BYU vs SE Oklahoma State

First of all the starting lineup was



Carlino

Cusick

Haws

Sharp

Davies



Nobody predicted that.



Davies was far and away the best player on the court. He made a 3, scored in the post and in the paint. He scored on the fastbreak. He missed some open passes but he was a one man wrecking crew. He must of scored almost 30.



IMO Carlino was the 2nd best player on the floor. He still makes some bad decisions and tries to do too much. But he is still a really talented player.



Haws has decent size, decent athletic ability and an amazing skill level. He's jumper was off to start the game but he got it back on track.



Delgado looks a little pudgy. He is athletic but not the kind of defender we need on the perimeter. With his feet set he is a knockdown 3 pt shooter.



Ambrosino is very skilled and decent athlete. He isn't Rogers thin but he is pretty thin. He can handle the ball and looks comfortable on the 3pt line.



Austin was the same.



Calvert looks like a player. Moved his feet well. Good ball handler with a PG mentality. He has a weird wind up and release but it usually goes in.



The problem I foresee we going to be out muscled and out toughed in some games. But man we made a bunch of 3's tonight. And Davies is a very good offensive player.



Oh and Harward played decent. He is more of traditional big man than Davies or Austin.

Sharp needs minutes! So, good. But he will fade fast at The four. I expect Davies at the 4 before long and Nate and Ian splitting time at 5. Maybe depends on the opponent match ups. Sharp probably can et up and down TE floor.

Sprained ankle that hasn't healed.

Partial tear in ankle ligament. Held out tonight. Another eval in a few days. Hopeful for return in next week or two.

Didn't see the game, just watched the highlights.



Davies jump shot looks a lot better than last year. I fully expect him to get 20 and 15 with regularity this year. With the way he has improved every year, I think that's reasonable.

Against this competition Davies could do anything he wanted.

I think I actually predicted this starting line-up - anyways Davies was a freaking monster. He only played like 18 minutes I believe and had 20+ points. Had he played the entire game we probably would have dropped 110+. Calvert is going to be an awesome back-up at PG. At times he played better than Carlino and made better decisions although he did make his share of errors. Calvert's ally-oop to Davies was sweet and he plays pretty unselfish. I think Carlino would have tried to score that on his own. No sure what to think of Ambrosino. Looks clumsy at times and his outside shot hasn't been the greatest yet. I think Sharps minutes were limited in the first half because he got 2 fouls early on. Austin still plays defense like an idiot at times. He's 6'11 with super long arms but always feels the need to put his lower half into the player he's guarding especailly after they've gone up in the air. If he would would just stand taller he wouldn't get so many fouls called. Delgado actually looked pretty good. He doesn't really look that pudgy he's just built like a running back. I think he was recruited to play football at Utah. Dude can drive and dish pretty well. With Carlino, Calvert, Haws and Delgado they all have the ability to drive to the hole and that will definitely help our perimeter game. It seems like we have some better ball handlers this year thank goodness. I really hope Zylstra has can improve upon last year - he still looks like a waste of space at times I'm just glad he didn't start yet. I really thought Harward was going to be a James Anderson clone - a warm body only good for fouls off the bench. He actually scored a couple times and rebounded pretty well. Our D' looked better than I thought it would and it was still pretty impressive to drop 103 points on offense.

Davies had 25 pts and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes

Every time I see Carlino I wonder when we signed Tavernari's little brother.

Here are my thoughts on the game:



Overall, I liked what I saw. We pushed the pace. We got a ton of steals, which created baskets; nice BYU/Rose basketball. Ball movement looked real nice. Lots of great dribble penetration and kick-outs to open shooters. Shooting looked good.



On defense I really liked how our guys' hands were in the passing lanes. We lost that last season.



We struggled at times against the zone. If it got to a half court game and SE had a chance to set up in the D there were a few possessions where we looked a little lost and just kept passing it around the top. Other than that, I pretty much liked what I saw.



Davies - he was awesome. 25 points in 18 minutes is impressive. 6 boards in 18 min is impressive too - that's essentially 1 board every 3 min. Loved the dunks and his outside shooting is much improved, which he'll need if he wants to succeed at the next level.



Carlino - much better vision and passing. Did a great job of driving and dishing, which we desperately need. Had a couple of head scratchers, but that's too be expected. He, of course, did his best Jimmer impression and launched a 3 five feet behind the arc, which he missed.



Haws - looked great. Really, really liked his mid-range shooting. It was spot on. He wasn't afraid to put it on the floor for a dribble or two and then pull up for the jumper. Something else we haven't had in a while.



Austin - played okay. He still plays small. Needs to use his length a bit more and shoot it more. He had a couple baseline jumpers, which were great. If he could somehow turn that into a turn around than there isn't a defender that could stop him.



Sharp - was solid. Still looked a little uncoordinated out there.



Delgado - wasn't too impressed. He needs to get his feet set before he shoots. If his feet our set, he's money. Defense seemed okay. Passing seemed alright.



Harward - looked pretty good. Played good defense and seemed to move around well on the court.



Zylstra - played fantastically, which is to be expected against a team like SE Oklahoma State. He had just under 20 points.



Calvert - shows promise. He likes to push the ball and has some great hops. Loved the alley-oop to Davies. Defense was looked real good. Very quick.



Ambrosino - wasn't all that impressed. Tall and played hard, but I think he missed every shot he took. No post up moves.



Cusick - looked the same. Solid play. Ran the floor well. Other than some fast breaks I don't remember him shooting it.

I appreciate those of you who get to see the games analyzing it for those of us that don't.
