 Here are BYU's rushing vs passing attempts since our SR QB returned from injury:

OSU: 33 rushing attempts 51 passing attempts

ND: 25 Rushing attempts 36 passing attempts.

So from my calculations, BYU has thrown more than it has run with Riley as the starting QB. Everyone got on Doman from his "bastardised" running offense when Taysom was starting at qb. I explained that Doman designed an offense that the Freshman was comfortable with that played to his strengths and I was right. Since Riley has been starting everyone has been saying that doman's play calling has been "fine" but Riley sucks. Funny how that works.

fried butter... long time, no see. :D Hope all is well. The only reason that ratio is 60/40 passing is because the Cougs were kept on their heels vs. the Beavers all game long 2 weeks ago and had to try and play catch up, especially midway through the 4th quarter on, not to mention their inability to run on Notre Dame. The play-calling isn't the main problem though... it's Riley's lack of arm strength, his inability to hit two talented receivers downfield with any kind of regularity and the refusal by Bronco & Doman to give the only QB with arm strength (Lark) a chance to play to see what he can do and whether or not he can improve the offense.

At this point, it makes absolutely no sense to continue playing Riley... there is nothing left to play for except eligibility for a meaningless Poinsettia Bowl, Riley isn't going to the NFL and doesn't need to showcase or try and put up stats for anyone and you may as well see what Lark has since he can at least throw the ball downfield to Hoffman, Apo and Friel. You don't need Riley's running/scrambling ability with Williams in the backfield and how do we know Lark isn't a gamer like other former BYU QB's that came off the bench to excel (like Doman did)? Some guys thrive in the moment and adrenalin of being in the ring in a real game situation and suck as practice players. This Bronco-Riley love affair is going to go down in the history books as one of the strangest relationships ever between a coach and a QB who's lucky to be playing at the D I-A level.

If Taysom was healthy I would feel very comfortable, I now think this could go either way. It is time to break in Lark, time to air it out a bit and give the kid a shot.

Riley should have been relegated to 3rd string after the Utah game.

Lark did get to play some against Weber but I don't know if that even gives us any idea of what he could do in a close game and against a D1 defense.

The fact that they are playing Riley over Lark is irrelavant to the statement that you made. You made a derogatory statement that Doman woudn't come out calling passes and I showed you where you were wrong. Also, as far as only throwing because we were behind, the OSU game was 21-21 going into the 4th and 28-24 with 9 minutes left in the quarter, I know I was there. Notre Dame BYU led all the way into the 4th and the run pass numbers are almost even, it had nothing to do with being unable to run on them. Your argument has no merit.

It was more TIC than anything - it's just that the BYU coaches seem to have a knack for doing the opposite of what they should against the strengths/weaknesses of the opposing team sometimes.

Also, as far as only throwing because we were behind, the OSU game was 21-21 going into the 4th and 28-24 with 9 minutes left in the quarter, I know I was there.

I know too - I was listening on the radio (Greg Wrubell - ugghh) - and the Cougs never had a lead in the game and were constantly having to match OSU scores and running the ball wasn't going to accomplish that.

Notre Dame BYU led all the way into the 4th and the run pass numbers are almost even, it had nothing to do with being unable to run on them.

Of course not, even though the Cougs averaged 16.5 yards rushing per quarter.

Your argument has no merit.

No, you just get upset and offended when someone points out glaring problems.

So let me get this straight - Georgia Tech has piled up some gaudy stats vs a significantly weaker SOS than BYU has played. Shocking. How could this happen.

The biggest problem with this game is that once again we are playing a reasonably good team on the Road.

Experts can argue all day whether home field advantage is worth 3 points or 7. Apply either number of points to our three road losses, and you get two ties and a win. Kick a field goal and bam 3-0. OSU was just a much better team that got two very fortunate bounces leading to a melt-down.

Wait until next year - and you will see what a difference SOS plays.

AW - things have really gotten bad over on the Hill, haven't they. Shouldn't you be busy analyzing the Ute's next loss and the increasing clouds over their bowl plans. It is unfortunate that they no longer seem able to keep U entertained.

wait until next year and see what a difference having a QB who can throw the ball with any accuracy at all makes. could easily have 7 wins right now with an average QB.

operating of course under the assumption that whoever gets the nod next year couldn't possibly be as bad as what we've watched this year, knock on wood. but right now of 122 div 1 qb's, 60 are above 135 per and 62 are below. it's right in the middle. that's all i ask.

Wrong.

Look at the games prior to Hill starting. We were option and QB draw heavy then too. Doman went into the season with a QB running heavy offense. Lark didn't get the call because Hill fit the offense better.

What changed? Hill and Riley's injuries.

Doman's style of offense produced two beat up QBs. As a result, Doman has been calling a different game. Doman also has to be more aggressive because his offense isn't doing anything and all signs point towards his head on the block.

Case in point, how many times did we run the option and QB draw against Weber vs how many times did we run it against ND. There shouldn't have been any need for a QB draw against Weber.

I posted this thought elsewhere, and I think that it will only gain credence from here on out. The U will not go to a bowl game this year. They must finish 4-1 to even make it to a barely eligible 6-6 season. I know that BYU's season has not turned out the way we had hoped, but sheesh, at least we'll head to a bowl.

WSU: 41 runs 37 passes

WSU2: 37 runs 42 passes

utah: 42 rushes 37 passes (with an injured QB)

BSU 39 rushes 19 passes (with an injured QB)

Hawaii 54 rushes 24 passes(Freshman athletic QB and a blowout where running will be to run out the clock)

USU: 45 rushes 36 passes.

So from the numbers, I wasn't wrong. He was calling a 50/50 rush pass game at the first of the year. Now protecting Riley he is calling a more 60/40 game (plus we are using a freshman RB now too).

I'm not refuting that Doman is protecting Riley. You claimed:

frdbtr wrote:

Again, as your numbers show, Doman came out of the gates running the football. What your numbers don't show, however, is how many of those plays were QB option, sneaks, draws or scrambles. There is no denying Doman has toned down the number of QB run plays in the last two weaks.

Against Utah, Doman ran the option with Riley as QB 12 times. 12 times! Factor in the QB draws and scrambles and Riley was running around out there exposed on nearly 1/3 of our plays. Against ND, Doman ran the option 2 times, there were 2 QB draws, and if I remember correctly 2 QB scrambles - a fraction of what it was early in the season.

So the idea that Doman designed an offense Hill was comfortable with is false. Hill got the start over Lark because Hill "fit" the offense better. Both Doman and Bronco have said such. The offense, prior to Riley and Hill's injuries was an option heavy, QB run heavy offense.

Since the injuries, Doman has had to switch it up - more pass plays, less option, less QB designed runs. We're not seeing the same offense we saw at the beginning of the season when Riley and Hill were QBing and that's because Doman's offense at the beginning landed two QBs on the sidelines.
S

The offensive balance between running and throwing isn't the issue with the offense. The issue is the QB running that offense isn't efficient enough.

In 21 games as an offensive coordinator, Doman's QBs have only met the PER standard seven times! That's it! SEVEN! BYU is 7-0 in those games.

You can't win with an inefficient QB playing QB.

I would be willing to bet that in those games we were playing inferior opponents where our crappy offensive line could dominate. I still maintain that BYU's offensive woe's are due to the oline which is affecting QB play and probably comfort with play calling. It is time to go out and find an oline coach that gets our oline performing to the standard that it needs to compete with the good teams everyone wants us to start beating. Go back and look at the oline in the 06 TCU game and tell me how a guy with 2 sprained ankles could stand back there like a statue and throw down the field like Beck did. (TCU had a top rated defense that year) Our oline in 06 was awesome, Grimes left soon thereafter and it has gone down hill ever since.

The OL is the biggest issue. Deseret News article today reminds readers that BYU has lost 6 OL to injury. That plus a coach that had OL underachieving last season.
