Hoffman Still Open - Other Missed Plays

Seems like for this season, this phrase has replaced Harline still open.

In all our losses this year, failing to connect with him has been devastating. We can't seem to make the big play on the big stage when it is needed.



While I thought Riley played a respectable game compared to previous efforts, he missed three big passes which defined our frustration:



1. Pass to Friel - thrown behind him and intercepted by Teo. Led to ND score.

2. Pass to Falslev (wide open - thrown in dirt at his feet). Killed drive - could have led to score - put us up 21-7.

3. Pass to Hoffman - thrown behind him - 6 minutes left in game - would be game winning touchdown.



This has been a season where we could be undefeated if we limit turnovers, stupid mistakes and convert on big plays. All losses have come to teams that had QBs that were new, replacements or not proven. Heheh were ripe for the taking.



Hopefully, the team recognizes that we can play with any team in the country, we just need to play 4 quarters and capitalize on opportunities given - make the big play.

This isn't so much funny, (even though it is) as it is so disturbingly emblematic.



The pass that launched a thousand nightmares.

Multiple players have missed multiple plays. Are we relly going to nitpick every play?



What about all the drops? Do we need to call out every receiver for a dropped pass?



What about all the missed blocks? Do we need to call out every offensive linemen everytime they miss a block?



What about all the almost runs? Riley, Taysom, Jamaal and Alisa have all almost broken free for LONG runs. But only Taysom actually broke one off. Do wee need to call out every runner for not breaking a long run?



What about all the missed tackles? Do we need to call out every missed tackle?



Why are we just going to pick on one player - a player that has already been established should be sitting?

Maybe what we should ask is where is all "the execution and sound fundamental play" that is supposed to characterize a well coached Bronco team. I am surprised by the miscues that have plagued the team this year. We could blame the lack of focus as a result of injuries to OL and associated influx of new players, but some have risen to top regardless of challenges before them - Williams, Hoffman, et.al. while others have been maddenly inconsistent. Makes me wonder if it is due to higher level competition, nerves/pressure, attempt to overachieve/take more risks, impatience, etc. This being said, I hope Bronco channels that inner self-drive that will encourage them to aspire higher and execute more effectively.

And the Utah game last play where Riley's arm got hit on what could have been a TD. As Colie would say someone is not living right.

Agree 100%. Go to any school and there are "what if" moments. The reality is those plays could change the game, but there a lot of other plays to made these plays important....everyone deserves some blame. Already established is not the QB that BYU needs.

This is one of the more frustrating things with the team this year and last. Execution is one of Bronco's main talking points and the team has often failed to execute properly. Needless timeouts, false start penalties, personal fouls, and the Tayson Hill fiasco are all due to failed execution.

I agree that calling out individual plays and players it not that helpful to understanding why the season is 4-4. To me, this play shows just how open an opportunity can get, and how sucky it is when you don't capitalize. I knew Hoff was open, but man, there's nobody within 15 yards of him. Even if Riley gets the ball somewhere within the vicinity, Hoffman makes the play. Ugh..

It's part of the reason this season has been so frustrating. We're seeing all these plays that can be made and BYU just isn't making them.



And these are relatively simple plays (a 40-yard FG vs Utah, a 2-pt try vs Boise, a wide open Hoffman vs ND). These aren't herculean effort plays (like John Beck thrown 40 yards across his body, across the field with no time on the clock in 2006). These are plays that can and should be routinely made. And BYU just isn't executing at the most critical of times.



And the BYU coaching staff doesn't seem to have any answers on how to correct these lapses in execution.



For months and years under Crowton we heard that BYU is close, that we're young and inexpereicned and we're learning. Bronco has his new excuse for everything: we just need to execute better.

The other thing that seems to be missing this year is the communication and sense/timing of where players are going to be. Last year Jacobsen and Riley hooked up on a broken play that saved the drive and led to our last second defeat of the Aggies. Ditto for the Riley/Hoffman connection vs Tulsa the last seconds of he game. We don't seem to have that same chemistry this year and that is frustrating as we were used to Riley pulling off last second heroics - the never count them out of the game mentality.

Tough to develop that chemistry and timing when your qb injured most of the year and can't practice to do that.

Tough to develop timing with a QB who does not use the word in the way he plays QB. He is a roll the ball out there and play QB, not one to beat anyone with timing and execution, and never will be.



DOman and Bronco both know it too, and are paying hte price for it now. 4 losses in a row as a starter.
