The Extent of Taysom Hill Injury

Was playing golf in St George on Friday and got paired up with a couple brothers who played for BYU in the 70's (George and Rodger). George is an OBGYN in Provo and we got to talking BYU Football. He obviously agreed that BM needs to go but when I told him how excited I was about Taysom Hill and how sad it was to see his season end because of stupid coaching his face looked almost pale. He said, "His career might be over." He said that there was/is so much damage that he'll have a hard time getting back, period. I get that OBGYN's are hardly leg specialists or anything but I have to believe that Doctors are pretty well connected at least to a degree. Anyone else heard this kind of talk?

I have a hard time believing this. I work with surgeons day in and day out. I know from first hand experience how full of sh.... they are/can be. I also have a hard time believing that seeming how Taysom was walking around after the play and even took the final snap. If it was that bad there's no way he'd be walking around like that.

Dont be so quick to discredit George. I know him and he's not a typical village surgeon idiot.

I heard this rumor from another source, but I'm hoping for the best.

Riley: " that play to Hoffman will haunt me rest of my life."

BDoman: (if this is true) that play call for THill will haunt me the rest of my career.

The HIPPA law says that the surgeon should not be talking about what he found so there is a small chance the OBGYN knows anything.

It Is a tight community. HIPPA only slows the flow. But I would venture a guess that he is commenting on the nature of the injury.

Let me put some minds at ease on this one. That doctor was only speculating. Based upon the surgery, the injury was less severe than thought. The LCL was not torn, only stretched, and they merely had to reattach a tendon. He should be good to go by spring practice, but by summer without question.

Got this directly from a relative after the game yesterday who also happens to be a BYU team doctor.

I know the comment I am about to make may sound like 'he said, she said' stuff but I can second what Lawboy is saying. A good friend of mine knows Taysom's family well and said he should be back to full speed by spring though the family is nervous about Doman's plays and potential future injury. Also, he was going to have surgery in the off-season anyway to clean up and repair some stuff from the cheap hit he took in HS.

What???? Taysoms "advisors" are worried about the Brandon Doman offense??? How could they??? Crappy advisors. What next? Are they going to tell him to transfer??? Maybe they aren't quitters just yet, maybe we should just call them "doubters"??

What say you Team Riley??

I know I always consul an OBGYN when I have a knee injury. ;)

All I have to say is you should never trust something that Jordana Wynne's OBGYN tells you.

Athletes waive their HIPPA rights. And FERPA, I believe.

Ha ha..There's no such thing as waiving your HIPPA rights. HIPPA means, along with some other privacy measures, that nobody not directly involved in your care gets your health relate information without your direct consent. It's a federal mandate and it's not open to negotiations. However, working in the OR, I can tell you that all the individuals in their health related fields have the same lounges and talk about all their cases quite often. A high profile name like Taysom would probably have a lot of stuff shared between surgeons, especially if they are BYU fans.

Hope this is the case. Taysom was a breath of fresh air. Really excited about watching him progress.

I think what BYUtx was referring to was the athletes designate the team trainer and the head and position coaches as representatives with whom the doctors may share information, and then the players waive privacy rights as to those trainers/coaches.

One of my favorite quotes from last year was when Jordan Wynn cited HIPPA laws for why he couldn't disclose his own injury. Sweet.

My understanding from talking to a orthopedic is that an LCL is a much less serious injury than ACL/MCL as there's more blood flow in the area and the surgeon isn't required to replace the ligament but the ligament heals itself (with assitance from surgery). It sounds like it shouldn't be that bad. However, if Cougest works in an O.R. I imagine he's understands this better than most of us.

All I know is if we are consulting OBGYN's then our football team has much bigger issues to worry about...

OBGYN named "George" -- no last name given but he played at BYU at some point in the past, and other people know him, and doom and gloom.

Also, if Taysom's family is so worried about Brandon Doman's play calling (which I am too) maybe they should tell Taysom not to take a straight on hit to the knee while standing straight up. There's a reason why Running Backs go into contact leaning forward, it protects their body.

Taysom said he didn't see the guy coming.

on a funnier note my dad is an obgyn and we talked this weekend about taysom's injury. he thought he would make a full recovery and be fine from what he heard. he was encouraged that it was a lcl not one of the others.

hippa rights can be waived in a way also. patients sign hippa authorization all the time. the authoriztino allows that party it is given to to access phi.

Not very good field vision for a QB ;)

But seriously, I hope he'll be okay, and I think he will, from what I've heard. His surgeon was the guy up in Park City that did the same work on Tiger Woods.

That's exactly right snoscyth. Johnny Lingo, this isn't technically waiving your HIPPA rights, it's directing it by giving your consent/authorization that a group (BYU FOOTBALL COACHES, TEAM DOCTORS) are allowed to have information about your health. This doesn't mean that an orthopedic surgeon can share you information with an OBGYN. I know Technicalities right ;)
