we're a top 10 team with John Beck or Max Hall and anything resembling a kicker... our defense deserves better

You'd need an OC that knew what to do with them too.

We are one average kicker away from being in the Top 25.

Or a top 20 team with Kevin Feterik or Sean Covey...

All I want is an offensive line. Our offense was working in spite of them and were nearly good enough for the win, except we kept having to dig ourselves out of big holes caused by penalties and sacks.

And yet - our defense gave up more rushing yards to ND than just about anyone else and was missing tackles and giving up big pass plays all over the field and once again, like @U and @BSU could not get a stop or a turnover when the game was on the line.

And our offense scored two TDs vs a defense that has not given up 1 even vs ranked teams in four weeks.

So our offense and QB until the hail Mary with 6 seconds left exceeded expectations. Our Special teams was on par with ND at least.

Our defense did not meet expectations - for the 2nd week in a row because they do not play as well vs good teams on the road.

We are a decent kicker from being 7-1. @Utah - clank

@BSU - go for 2 partly due to lack of confidence in kicker who missed two EPs the next week for those that did not get the call an then TH missed Hoff - but that is OK since his first name is not Riley - and

@ND missed one FG and punted from inside the 40 instead of kicking another.

Here is who I have seen accept blame or be mentioned as contributing to our four losses

Defense not getting key stops or creating enough turnovers

Secondary

OL

Riley and Riley

Taysom

Our kick returner scolded for run backs that do not get out to the 25 hurting the team and did a couple more anyway

Receivers not getting separation

And on Riley's Hoff miss - broken play - adjusted routes - Hoff went a different direction than Riley expected.

Here is the irony of the OP

ND QB, ignoring the Riley Nelson Hail Mary Int with 6 seconds left after getting pushed back by a penalty - was not as good as Riley. PER experts please confirm. ND kicker was 1-3.

And yet ND won. Is it possible that the difference was a combination of a better defense and hone field advantage?

I am trying to understand the point of your post.

Are you saying we lost our games because our offense completely sucks - receivers, QBs, RBs, etc. If so, I certainly agree.

That said you can't deny all things considered if we had a kicker that could make a 35 yard field goal we'd have beaten Utah, BSU and ND. We'd have beaten two Top 25 teams regardless of how inept the rest of our offense is. A kicker has one job. And if you get into field goal range it's hid job to put the ball through the uprights. Ours doesn't. 35 yard kicks should be gimmie points.

Plenty of blame all around, but our kicking game is leaving points off the board.

BTW, what's up with the "clank"?

To the OP, if we have Max Hall or John Beck, we likely don't need the kicker as much.

ND's PER finished at 113.51. Riley was 112.41. Without the final INT (assuming the ball simply fell incomplete) his PER would have been 117.97. Hardly anything to crow about and only slightly better than ND. Further proof that BYU could have won this game with decent QB play.

The point of my post is almost exactly what you said plus the defense has also been exposed by two decent offenses. Now imagine how Oregon, USC, Stanford, Alabama, LSU, and others might expose them.

Clank refers to the @ U kick hitting the uprights.

Our kicking game is SIMPLY TERRIBLE. Maybe due to injury. Maybe it will improve. But simply terrible right now.

We do not yet have a FB.

Our OL is mediocre on its very best day.

Our QB is decent when healthy - injured too often - and not NFL material even on his best day and we have no back-up.

Defense is good - not elite - not close to elite.

Our coaches - mostly good - none great - a couple suspect

That was what I am saying. We are not a player or two away from being elite.

We simply are not.

We have Hoff, KVN, Ansah, Williams emerging, Friel inconsistent, Riley and Falslev, and as you will agree, that is starting to hit the law of diminishing returns.

I have to disagree with you Bibster, Riley is not "decent", he is poor, even when healthy. I don't think the extra plays he excelled on outweigh the negative plays tonight or most nights. He threw too many passes behind receivers, under thrown, or just plain in the wrong direction. I think he had a decent game for Riley, unfortunately, it isn't enough and will never be enough. Agreeing with the OP, I think we do hit the top ten this year with a "Decent" QB.

I don't think Riley is healthy. He's played much better in the first half than the second. I wonder if his meds wear off or he stiffens up after halftime or he just gets tired.

But in the four first halves when we know he's been healthy (WSUs, OS, ND) he's got 7 TDs and 3 INTs with a 140.31 PER and .656 completion pct. In the 2nd halves he's played, he's got 0 TDs 3 INTs and a 101.02 PER and .561 completion pct.

I think he can be decent. I don't think he has been this year. And I think it's time for him to sit.

That'll never happen since Bronco is in love with Riley. Maybe this love affair goes beyond football....

While you're on the subject of awful 2nd half play, it seems like some of the qb issues are tied in with the o-line getting tired/manhandled.

Possibly. But that doesn't excuse poor play.

And while you are on the subject of terrible 2nd half play, why don't we talk about how a lot of the defenses 2nd half woes can be attributed to the fact that they have been on the field for the majority of the game because of an offense that can't score in the redzone, and a quarterback that can't help but give the ball back a minimum of 3 times a game.
M
MesaCougFan
BYU's offense scored twice in the red zone against ND (on passes by the worst QB ever to walk on this planet none the less!). The same ND that hadn't given up an offensive TD to MSU, Michigan, Miami, or Stanford.
L

Riley missed on 6 crucial throws yesterday, maybe 7. Go watch the tape. The problem was that his footwork was so awful today, and always has been. When he sets and throws he is ok enough. But his propensity to throw off of his back foot, or to jump throw killed yesterday. He underthrew guys badly, overthrew others, behind others. Accuracy is not his strength.

Missed throw to Williams, to Friel, to Falslev and to Hoff. Momentum play throws. Perhaps even a scoring throw. And in big games, we need a QB who can stand and deliver those passes more accurately and consistently.

Doman called a really good game. Riley did not execute it well enough. End of story, game lost.
C
Cougs_Rule
Even his 1 yard pass was off the mark and a near turnover. Not to leave out his two yard shovel pass that was very ill advised. Although the Dlineman did tackle Williams almost before Riley even shoveled.
