Two stats why the Cougs can't and won't beat the Irish

National rankings:



Total offense:



BYU - 70

ND - 76



Total defense:



BYU - 5

ND - 10



But here's the problem:



Strength of Schedule:



BYU - 65

ND - 17



So both teams are about equal on both sides of the ball but the Irish have played an SOS 48 spots better than the Cougs - that spells trouble, especially on the road. But perhaps the most worrisome... BYU is #101 in turnover margin this year so far... the Irish are 11th. #65 right now in San Diego State and #17 is Ohio State - that's a pretty big difference in the talent level of the average of caliber of opposition played so far. :~( And with Riley being the opposing D's most valuable player, that probably won't change much Saturday. :blush:

Even worse... BYU is 106th in penalty yards this season... the Irish... 36th.

This is a great post. Respectful, insightful, and classy.



One more point which is intertwined - they are #5 and BYU is unranked and playing on the road. It will be an upset of massive proportions if BYU wins. BYU D is competitive vs ND offense, but ND defense will eat our OL alive.



And if we need a field goal - crap shoot.

Welcome back Wolfie! I'm one of the few (I think) who always gets a kick out of your incessant BYU bashing. I think you would be best served to every once in a while credit the team for things they do well, but hey just trying to help you last longer than a week here.

Good points, Wolfie. I think it's a small chance we win today, but the only stat I'm worried about is turnover margin. If by some miracle we win the turnover battle, I think we will win this one. :)
