Why only posts about the offense? The defense stunk!

Now I know there are complaints to be had about the offense in the OSU game.



But lets face it, the defense came out all high and mighty and got absolutely owned in every aspect of the game. BYU's defense was exposed in every possible way.



Penalties, big plays, passing, rushing, scoring, BYU gave up everything.



The fact is that the Cougar secondary finally got burned by letting receivers get behind them, which is something that has happened in every game this year, but we've always been lucky enough to not have faced a QB good enough to hit the wide open receivers until now.



Do the linebackers even know how to wrap up and tackle?

Defense certainly lost us that game. I don't fee like i ever saw byu rush more than 4 and that was even rare. I haven't rewatched the game yet but it seemed we weren't dialing up the heat really ever like we had seen in the past.

That was my observation from sitting in the stands. Their O-line dominated our D-line and Vaz had 5-8 seconds on every play. I don't know if anyone could have covered their receivers as long as our DB's needed too. Their O-line won the game for them. Riley could have thrown for 350 yards with that much time.

I think Ziggy Ansah may have cost himself a few spots in the draft after Saturday. Still lacks technique and showed he can be handled by a good lineman.

I don't know why Bronco didn't come out gunning for this guy. I would have blitzed like crazy the first several series and rattle the kid. Instead, he gave him all day and let him get in a groove.



It also helped that the Oregon State offensive line was getting away with murder. Anyone else notice the blatant holds happening nearly every play? I think they got called for 1 hold the entire game.

It seems to be a desperate clinging to a belief that BYU was just one QB in the way or coach or two in the way of winning the NC.



Vs the reality - BYU is a decent team - good defense - mediocre to weak offense with good but not elite coaching and a kicker short of even sniffing a BCS Bowl.



Hyped players with little experience do not beat Top 10 teams.

Here come the posters saying OSU was not legit Top 10 with a back- up QB.



Well - if so - we are even further from sniffing anything elite.



Now - if we had Manti Teo, Star L, OSU OL, and USC QB, and an actual FB, and a faster more bruising RB, and a TE that did not hear footsteps Saturday and a 2nd WR as good as Apo is supposed to be but isn't and a kicker and more elite coaches - we B right in the thick of it. We SIMPLY would.

If we had OSU's OL we'd probably be a 1 loss team now.

This topic is for Defensive issues only. No offensive stuff here.

Our D struggleed, but I give them a pass. They are entitled to 1 bad game in 7. Our O has had 5 bad games in 7.



OSU outschemed our defense, then made great plays. JJ got beat early by perfect throws. Revis gets beat by those. And then once BYU adjusted by rolling a safety over more to help JJ, they went after our LBs and safeties with crossing patterns. The lack of pressure gave Vaz all day to pick us apart. And he made the throws, all credit to him. They threw to open up the run--novel concept, I know.....



Bronco got a master class by Mike Riley on Saturday.

The answer is because Riley Nelson plays offense. It has been determined that he will be the scapegoat for all our ailments. If he anything less than spectacular he is to blame - which he hasn't been since the opener.



The defense played poorly on 1st down. That is where the game was lost. They were good on 3rd down, but not on 1st nor in the blue zone.



Oregon St ran 30 first down plays, but they scored FOUR times on 1st down and got 10 or more yards on 1st down an additional nine times (once on penalty).



OS averaged nearly nine yards to go on 2nd down - when they got there.

One area where I've been disappointed with the defense all year, and I think is a valid concern is take-aways. When was the last time there was a truly great defense that was ranked 80th or above in take-aways? BYU's defense has done a very poor job this year of taking advantage of potential turnovers with several dropped tipped passes and does not strip the ball well.

BYU is forcing turnovers at the lowest rated since at least 2000 (my data only goes back to 2001).
