QB management

Thoughts that I've had today: I think that the Heaps dilemma runs deeper into our current woes than the Heaps vs Riley argument(this isn't a Heaps bashing post). I think our coaches banked on Heaps being amazing and didn't really spend any time recruiting other qb's. We never really heard about any qb recruits coming in during the Hall years or even in 2010 or early 2011(Lark and Munns first seasons were 2006,2007). Nor did we ever spend time getting our backups ready for the future. Heaps was recruited and everyone expected him to be our next great QB.



Beginning of 2010, dilemma: we haven't recruited anyone else, do we go with our average qb or our true freshman that is going to take us to new heights? Let's split reps! We start poorly and scramble for a winning season, with Heaps playing well at the end of the season(not getting in to discussion about quality of opponents).



Jump forward to 2011/2012: Heaps finished 2010 well and will continue to grow towards awesomeness, hopefully that happens as planned. Hill also transfers in at this time and adds to the pipeline for the future, but we really don't have a strong pipeline of qb's coming in. Season starts, Heaps plays poorly for whatever reason, Riley comes in and saves the season. Heaps decides to leave. Coaches: we need to do a better job recruiting qb's going forward. Olsen transfers, Mangum, the kid from Washington(Green?).



Riley is who he is, an average or so qb. Because of the bad qb pipeline management of the past several years, he was the best option going into this season, but he has been injured and regressed since the beginning of the season. Could Lark come in and do a better job? I have no idea. But the hole we find ourselves in right now when it comes to our QB, has been many years in the making. Are there other factors into our current woes(oline, etc)? Of course, but management of our QB situation has been problematic for years.

Perhaps it was George Bush's fault...

Our coaches completely banked on Heaps panning out. So much so that after he committed in 2009, the coaches didn't use 2009 as a proving ground for Riley Nelson to see if he could be the heir apparent or not.



I posted elsehwere, that BYU had multiple blowouts in 2009 that they could have used to see if Nelson was fully capable of running the offense or not. They chose not to do so. It's been four years of poor QB decision making by the coaching staff.

Hill might've saved the coaching staff but they squandered that one too. All I can do is laugh at this program sometimes. We have enough going against us without having bumbling coaching problems.

I'm fine with the recruiting of QB's but why on earth don't we give our back ups snaps at the end of games? This was my biggest frustration of the game is we have a QB that's bound to get injured, the next game is against a top defense, and we're down 18 points at the end of the game and we're not giving a backup any snaps. If they don't want to use Lark that's fine but give someone some reps!



If we're not good enough to win that's fine but if were doing stupid things like this it drives me crazy. I'm guess this has been discussed at leangth since the game but I haven't had time to read it all.



Were pulling a Utah and putting everything into one qb and we'll be surprised when he gets hurt and we have nobody behind him. :sick:

Just wait until next year. Hill will now no longer be able to gain any experience the rest of this season nor spring ball next year. He really needed that extra time to get ready for next years BRUTAL schedule. Good luck with that
