LawboyDefense first. Put great athletes on defense, then let them make plays. Speed all over the field. Shut teams down with a combination of scheme and speed.
Flip side to it is that our offense can be pedestrian, and the QB play struggles--just like most SEC teams as well. Put a good athlete back there, let him make some plays, and if he can throw it, you get a special seasn. If not, the D is good enough to win many games for you, but you will struggle in some games as well.
I think it is a huge paradigm ship that many BYU just are not dealing with very well. We are used to great offensive football, not great defensive football. We are used to trying to win 42-38, not 16-10. Or 6-3. Bronco ball is not LaVell ball. Not even close.
If the defense can keep perfoming like this, and the O catches up, we will be really good. Good in ways that BYU is typically not good. But the O is a mess right now and needs major work, espeically throwing the ball.
Best case is that we try to emulate Bama. D first. Fun defense o watch with many great athletes flying around making plays. Emphasis on a ball control power run game, but with QBs that can make throws to WRs that have skill. BAsically, we all know their identity and what they will try to do from game to game.
For that to thappen, two things need to happen. First, the Oline has to get better. Lots better. And second, we need QBs who are great game managers, can make the throws in the pocket. We have neither right now, as far as we can tell.
RIght now, that is not us. We are more LSU. Good fast Defense with skill players, but an O that is just not consistent enough, and has QB issues, Oline issues, and lacks a real identity etc.
I hope Bronco can get there. I really do. But for it to happen, that offense needs to be revised. They should have stuck with what they started in 2011, and not abandoned it, in spite of QB issues. Sometimes there are growth pains to building things. But changing back and forth does not help either. Not long term.
