Oregon State - The Next Hurdle

Now that we have had a couple of days to savor and celebrate and share our excitement about our 4-2 cougars who are just 4-6 points away from being undefeated depending on wich math you use,



Let's talk about our next opponent. The mighty mighty Beavers.



They are really good this year. A worthy opponent. That great home game after September that everyone has been praying for.



A pleasant surprise. Totally unexpected. I have been away from home, TV, and PC for three weeks and most of the last 2 months. An island of sorts.



Leave all of the glorious celebration of our program and our team to the other threads.



OSU facts, observations, and analysis please.

I predicted we would be 5-2 going into the week we play Notre Dame. And I stand by that. But we've gotta play "our game" when we face Oregon State - i.e. mainly defensive, ball control, low scoring, field position, etc.

They might be the highest ranked offense before playing us but that will change after the game just like USU's rank.

Hmmm...based on those stats, what kind of score are we predicting?



Since game 1, our think our defense has steadily improved while our offense has dropped off the face of the earth. I bet we can hold them to 14 points or less. No idea how much we can score though because who knows how healthy/gun shy Riley will actually be.



I'm guessing that IF we can win, it will be in the 17-14 or 13-10 score range. If we lose, it will be something like 7-10

I'd think it would be the other way. There's a real limit to what we can expect to score so the lower scoring the game is, the better chance we have.

I'm predicting OSU will not score a TD, maybe two or three field goals, but no TDs. The defense is getting better and better and more confident, and Ziggy Ansah is the real deal, a DE like BYU has never had before. If the offense can score two TDs, BYU will win this game.

Uh, Jason Buck may argue with you on Ansah. But i guess if you are going Africa, three years playing and getting noticed by scouts, yes.



But as for scoring. BYU year in and out does better vs the run. We have not seen as good a passing attack this year. They are 9th in the NCAA in passing, but only 93rd in scoring. So I guess if we bend and don't break and hold them to field goals, yes, we will hold them to 13 points.

Oregon State is #103 in rushing offense.......BYU is #1 in rushing defense.



Oregon State is #9 in passing offense......BYU is #12 in passing defense.



Oregon State is #92 in scoring offense.....BYU is #3 in scoring defense.



Oregon State is #32 in total offense.......BYU is #5 in total defense.

I think the Beavers score more than you predict.

My worry is that BYU always seems to embarrass Oregon St., like the

last bowl game they played. It'll be different this time.

Oregon State's offense only scored 19 points against Washington State, and 10 points against Wisconsin (Utah State scored 14). So I agree with golong. No TD's for Oregon State unless they're given up by our offense. 2-3 Field Goals will likely be the most our defense allows. Now the question is if our offense can score.



*Edit: My prediction is an unfortunate 6-9 loss. We score a touchdown but miss another PAT, they get 3 field goals including being held to a field goal when they get the ball inside the 20 because of an offensive turnover.

Welcome. Fill us in on how the Beavs have done vs each opponent - key weapons - O - D - Special Teams. We can't kick a field goal or even an extra point lately, for example. Our offense has ? Re QB and OL mostly due to injuries. Cody Hoffman WR and K Friel TE and JD Falslev - slot catch most passes lately. You saw a healthy Riley Nelson at QB last year. WSU saw one in the opener. He got injured in the next game and spiraled downward trying to play injured. Backup got injured at the end of USU game. Not sure how fully recovered Riley is. James Lark is a senior back-up but virtually untested. Defense is better than last year. Much better. Legit.

If riley is healthy, we win going away. If riley is not healthy, we win close. Either way we win. Not impressed with OSU, and there's no way they are the 10th best team.

Greetings from NW Oregon! I've been enjoying all your threads regarding the upcoming game with our Oregon State Beavers! I especially like the replies from those predicting the Beavers won't score a TD. Well..., ya never know so we'll all find out in 6-days.



First off, let me say that I am sincerely sorry to read about all the injuries your team has sustained this season so far. No ethical competitor wants to compete on a fair basis with an opponent who is weakened by injury..., if that is indeed the case with BYU??? Hope your boys can pull it together and play BYU ball!



Now that the nice stuff is over let's get to it! First off, let me tell you, this is not the same Beaver team you folks played last year! Do you really think the Beavs new #10 ranking would be handed out to a team that has no potential to score against a team that isn't even in the voting for the Top-25? Seriously..., do you?



Stats are all fine and good for what they are..., but they don't measure important factors that are part of all teams. Factors like, "heart", "desire", and "motivation"! These are all attributes the 2012 Beavers have in abundance!



About once, maybe twice a decade OS has a pretty good team, and this is one of those years. We are solid both sides of the ball! This is the most well rounded "O" & "D" we have had in some time! Trust me, this year's Beavers have ALL the pieces of the puzzle though, so far they have not put all those pieces together in any single game, but the pieces are all there! The bad news for you Seagull lovers is that the perfect game for the Beavs is coming and you might be the unlucky recipients of it??? Us Beaver fans, and the team admit we had a bad offensive game this past Saturday. Bummer, but when a team has a "down" night they often bounce-back with a fantastic performance the next time out, and so it may well be this next Saturday!



The OS Beavers were issued 2-Cougar tags for this Fall's hunt and so far we have only filled one of them! Beavers 31, BYU Cougs 10

Our d has given up a total of 3 points in 13 quarters, including zero to the most highly regarded offensive mind in cfball, so forgive us if the beaver o doesn't make us quiver with fear. The real question is if our depleted o can score any points.

Well, I wouldn't blame OSU at all for being optimistic. However, the only way they score 31 on us is with turnovers--which is entirely possible given our offense and having Riley back. But it will also have to happen without much of a running game.



I do think its slightly more likely we lose, but I'd be very surprised if it was by 21 points.



BTW, I do appreciate the gracious words from visiting OSU fans. You guys have a lot to be proud of this year and its well deserved!

So we've got 2 OSU fans here so far predicting their team will score 24-31 points against our D? In Provo? Uh...OK. :whistle:

OSU was young and inexperienced last year. Mannion is now a 2nd year starter so we expect you to be better this year. I was really impressed with the Wisconsin and UCLA wins but now that we see how good they are, I am not as impressed as before. Still looking for a good game. We have 20 sacks in 6 games so I expect to pressure on the QB and hope to get some interceptions which was a problem last week for you.

Greetings Locust. I live in Happy Valley OR, & I follow the Beavers every year. Last year was a lot of fun for me because I don't get to see my Cougars in the stadium very often. The Beaver fans last year were very gracious and a lot of fun to talk and joke with. My church group is evenly split between BYU, Oregon State, Oregon, & Boise State fans.



The BEavers haven't seen a defense like they will see this Saturday. We haven't given up a TD to opposing offenses in 3 games. I have high hopes for my Cougars, but this has had me worried all year.That being said however, I really don't think you guys score 31 points on us.



Could you Beavers do us all a favor?? Could you please kick the crap out of the Utes the following week?

I'll be very surprised if an OSU team that could manage 19 points at home comes close to that on the road this week.



You don't beat BYU by being one dimensional. You lose. I'd have to go back and find my post from last season, but you have to be able to run AND pass to beat BYU. If you can only do one, you lose.



OSU isn't a good running team and are only an average passing team. Their offense will be completely shut down.



If BYU doesn't shoot themselves in the foot and turn the ball over and give OSU shot fields, the Beavers won't be able to sustain enough drives to score enough points.
