As promised, here is how BYU is doing against our opponents' offensive and defensive averages with the BYU game taken out of their averages. A blue font means BYU did better either offensively or defensively than the opponents' averages.

SOS and probably RN health made games 3 and 4 more balanced - especially game 4. Back to dominance with a weak opponent, OL overhaul, and a jet-lagged opponent and a healthy, but inexperienced QB.

The USU game is looming large.

The lack of interest in it is looming even larger.

Shows me that BYU is actually pretty close. We're clearly an extremely good defensive team. Our offense is pretty average and we really need to improve our passing game.

I think Boise's has a typo.

should be:

Wow! Great catch! I didn't even notice that. Further proof of just how close BYU is.

And does this vindicate Bronco a little bit when he says BYU needs to worry more about what BYU does than our opponents?

I mean, Utah didn't do anything to really earn that score, it was an unforced error.

As well, a healthy Riley in those two games makes better decisions and performs better and we are in the positive in almost every category.

THis was supposed to be the NC, National Championship year. So it shouldn't be too surprising.

Unfortunately NC stands for something else now.

Do you have the passing statistics? I am assuming those are rolled up in the PER numbers, but it would be nice to see those by themselves.

As we go forward this season, I'll try to update the each week. I think we now have enough data on each team that you can get a good idea of how good each team is by taking out the BYU game stats. I won't look forward, just backwards.

What this shows--clearly--is that QB play is what is our issue is. PER below opponent average in 3of 5 games is poor. And cost us both losses.

Most of us have already figured out that Riley played so poorly while injured that he probably should have been taken out sooner. To a far lesser extent, the inexperience of his back-up was also a factor.

Bigger issue is the OL play not helping our running game or passing game vs good defenses - contributes to injury risk as well.

It will be very interesting to see how the revamped OL fares vs USU and OSU at home.
