BoiseBYUSeptember is in the books! A great month for the Bottom Five. Here's this week's entry.
5. Baylor. "Coach, I have some good news for you. You are going to put up 63 points on West Virginia and at their place. Just one of your receivers will have 314 yards in receptions. I don't think that has ever happened before. The problem is that it won't mean diddly because your defense gave up even more." If WVU had played the other Baylor school, the result might have been different. Mary Hardin-Baylor beat Sul Ross St. 76-28.
4. Arkansas. The big questions for Arkansas fans to be answered: Can Arkansas keep a team under 50 points? Can Coach Smith keep his car? Can Arkansas still go to the Big 12?
3. Colorado. The team restored my faith by losing to UCLA 41-14. But how did UCLA give up 14? Colorado will have to show more before moving up.
2. Chow's handshake. It was not much of one and so I was really going to blast the Coach
for being a bad sport, but then I realized he got more skin on BYU than most of his defenders did during the game, so it is all good. In the last 8 quarters at LES, Coach Chow is 0-106.
1. Idaho. 0-5 and in their last three loss they've given up 169 points. Hard times on the Palouse.
Honorable Mentions: Cal is now 1-4; Wazzu the same, although they did put 26 up on Oregon. LSU is the suckiest top five team around; La.Tech might be the best team in Louisiana this year. And TCU?!? Their offense gained a total of 150 yards for the whole game! They still won because SMU is really good at turning the ball over.
In the religions department, in addition to the TCU game note above, the Lutherans (Texas Lutheran) beat the Baptists (E. Texas Baptist) 34-28. And Alma beat Olivet 20-14. The score would have been worse had the coach put in the Stripling Warriors. And I am sad to report that there is apparently no more hope: Adrian 34 Hope 0.
