Rumor that Riley Nelson Out for Season

TornbySports is reporting from a source close to the BYU FB program that the career of RN is now over, and that an official announcement from the Admin is forthcoming. Any legs to this story?

Wouldn't surprise me at all. who knows if it is true though.

I've seen the same theory floating around all going back to the tornbysports page. No legitimate sources are saying it yet. I don't know yet.

If only out for the season, he better not get another medical redshirt...



If his career is over then its safe to say that his career over-exceeded most expectations of what he could do coming out of high school with only 1-AA and USU offers. He played about as well as he could. I'm sure they will have him on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Hopefully he stopped playing before any permanent injuries occurred to his back.

I have not been able to get the tornbysports page to function. Keeps reporting back with a database error.

I hope they keep it underwraps as long as they can. The other teams need to prepare for him.

The gameplan doesn't seem to change much with Riley starting vs. Taysom starting. How does that really effect other teams preparation exactly?

TornBySports has received information this morning from a source close to the BYU football program that senior quarterback Riley Nelson’s football playing career is over. The source also said that an official announcement from BYU could be made soon.



The injury to Nelson’s back that caused him to sit the entire game against Hawaii, has supposedly been present since the Weber State game and has limited his affectiveness on the field since. According to our source, it has since been determined that it has put an end to Nelson’s college football playing career. If so, 22 year-old Taysom Hill would likely be named the starting quarterback for BYU.



This season, Nelson has a QB rating of 122.8, with 754 passing yards and has completed 58.7% of his passes. He’s thrown five touchdowns and interception each. He has also run the football 36 times for a total of 84 yards. He has failed to find the endzone on the ground this season.

If this is true, I am torn.



In a way, I feel bad for Riley as he has injuries issues all 3 years as BYU QB. Not surprised as he plays physical and is not a big dude. So in a way, it is his own fault. He just will not back down from contact, and the constant beating on the body has to take a toll. He played tough, added toughness to BYU football, and was a good leader in that respect.



On the other hand, I am ready to put the RN era behind BYU. Not just because of the Jake v. RIley stuff, and now the Riley v. Hill stuff, but also because I just do not trust the kid. He played hurt in 2010 and did not disclose injuries until forced out for the season by them. Happened again in 2012, with worse consequences. I know that kid wants to play, and I don't blame him, but there has been an issue with Riley putting Riley first before the team, to the detriment of results on teh field. A warrior mentality is great, until it isn't. And we crossed that bridge with RIley.



SO I wish him well, if true, but look forward to the next 3.5 years with T. Hill. Let's hope he takes off from here, and takes BYU football with him.

If he really has cracked vertebrae, then I wouldn't at all be surprised if he's done. That's nothing to mess around with. It's sad to see - he's been fun to watch, despite his difficulty trying to play while hurt.

Does anyone follow CheshSports? I am a little concerned that his injury has limited his "affectiveness." Don't get me wrong...I guess I should care how affectionate Riley is...but I think most of us would be concerned with how effective he is (or isn't).

If this is true, I am sad for Riley. He is a warrior and has played his heart out for BYU even when he was injured and tried to go anyway. I wish him well in his future endeovors.

Have BYU trainers actually confirmed "cracked vertebrae" or is that just speculation?



"Back injury" could be a million different things.



Also, what would be the medical terminology for "cracked vertebrae" (for the doctors on the forum)? Something I could Google...

email from someone very close to the Nelson family states that he has 3 cracked vertebrae in his lower back suffered in the Weber State Game.......wouldn't be surprised to see that type of injury end his career.

If this is true it is extremely hard for me to believe that our staff allowed him to play. That is simply negligence and dangerous. If riley had gone in and broken his neck that could have been the end of byu sports. I really can't believe that the staff would let someone play that has cracked vertebrae. that sounds just out of this world to me.

I was listening and commented on it.



If that's true, Riley shouldn't be allowed to put his little toe on the field and that was gross negligence on the coaching staff to play him against Utah and BSU. I find it hard to believe a scan on his back wasn't done after the Weber game.



If a scan wasn't done after the Weber game, then BYU needs to re-examine it's medical procedures. Every injury should be getting a scan. There should be no relying on the player to inform the coach how medically sound they are.



FAIL on Bronco's part - whether he scanned Riley's back and let him play anyways or didn't bother to scan it. BYU is lucky Riley didn't end up in a wheelchair.

I agree with this post completely.



I feel so shallow. I must confess. I am still so sad about the Utah and BSU games. And sometimes that turns to anger. I have spent the last 2.5 weeks really unhappy with BYU coaches. I actually could not fully enjoy the Hawaii game because my mind kept racing back to the two previous outings.



At times during the Hawaii game my anger found itslef focusing on the kicking game... Maybe if the feild goal bounces in at Utah then the coaches would have had have enough confidence to cement the tie in Boise...etc. I think I am looking for a reason to not doubt the coaches because if its the coaches fault, that could result in years of disspointment.



Suddenly my selfish anger is turning to Riley Nelson. IF his inability to sit himself down cost BYU two STUPID losses (I know; if IF's and BUT's were candy and nuts we'ld all have a wonderful Christmas), then I am angry with Riley and will be for a long time.



Okay, now that I have ranted, I really do hope that Riley will be okay, and I must acknowledge his spirit.

I don't know if the true story will ever come out. But the coaches new Riley was injured in the Weber St. game and didn't play him for the full 2nd half. Can't imagine how they would fail to get him scanned. It would be highly unlikely to miss seeing cracked vertebrae from xrays/mri scans.
