Bronco's interview today

Said that Riley is the guy. Said that he is "tougher than any of us", said that they will not know until the end of the week if he will be ready to play or not.



K, Bronco has said many times in reply to questions about other players health that if they don't practice by thursday, they don't play on saturday. If he changes this policy to allow an injured Riley nelson to play against Hawaii, I am going to join the anti Bronco crowd. I am starting to believe that Bronco has an irrational man crush on Riley and it is hurting the team.

Too hurt to practice to hurt to play. Time to pull up your big boy pants.

Tougher than any of us? What does that even mean? That he is hurt and can suit up and play anyway? I'd call that stupid -- not tough. Nelson is selfishly hurting the team he supposedly has allegiance to and he is insulting Lark and Hill by essentially saying that he is the superior quarterback even when injured. In his mind a wounded Nelson > healthy Lark or Hill. If he really thinks that then I have totally lost respect for him.

Heaps loses job with an 80 PER (only time under 100 for the year). Riley has a PER of -4, and is the unquestioned starter. The entitlement mentality on this team, perpetuated by the coaching staff needs to stop.

Bronco is really irritating me, much more than usual. he will never do what it takes for byu to go undefeated.

I love Bronco, but these last two years have made me wonder if he knows what's going on with his team. I don't know what his fixation is with Riley. He just isn't very good.

We all might have tendencies to read the same quotes but hear different things - maybe what we want to hear or believe.



Here is what I believe re Riley not practicing. I doubt like HECCKK that Riley asked to be held out of practice unless he could not walk. I believe Riley told coaches he was injured but that he could play through the pain. I believe that the coaches held him out of Weber State 2nd half to avoid further injury since he was not needed. I believe coaches held him out of practices for the same reason. I believe they played him because the alternatives seemed worse and they and Riley overestimated his ability to throw - even though he ran and ignored the pain - some involuntary spasm affected the throwing. I believe Riley and the coaches were too slow in recognizing that it just was not going to work - especially with poor pass protection. I expect more of the same re holding Riley out if not needed, unless he is healthy. It will be interesting to see if they feel they can rest him vs UH. Clearly he will not play without doctor clearance.



If I were making the decision - I would hold him out until Hill and Lark proved too ineffective to move the team. Either or both would benefit and the team would benefit from the experience.



Let's not judge the character of our evil or foolhardy coach if he treats a player ready and willing to practice thatvhe held out of practice differently than he treats a player who held himself or whose doctor held him out of practice.

Everyone is missing the entire point of this....RILEY NELSON SHOULD NOT HAVE EVER BEEN NAMED STARTING QB LAST YEAR. He's a decent backup. He came in and did what good backups are supposed to do against USU last year, but Heaps should have been starting against SJSU the following week.

Speaking of being stubborn or being stuck:



Did you carefully craft this to be so one-sided or are you really this thick.



Heaps stunk from week 1 of 2011 through 3/4 of USU. He was by all accounts - perfectly healthy. Further - most coaches will never take a starting job away due to an injury - unless the injury never heals sufficiently.



Further - Heaps had an experienced back-up who actually was the starter in 2010 - 1st of dual starters - until he lost his job for the season due to injury - and really did not get the shot to regain his spot in 2011 because Heaps by then had more experience.



Nelson got no favoritism and in fact got the shaft by not being allowed to compete for his old job as the presumed starter.



Get over Heaps. He is gone. He Quit. Or he would have finished the Weber State game and started U, BSU, and probably beyond if he played well.

See my prior post re what you are missing. Get un-stuck. Heaps played scared. That actually leads to injury and team giving up. Heaps had lost the confidence of his teammates by the 2nd half of the Texas game. Alysa stated this in an interview a few weeks ago. He said players were asking each other why Texas could unplug their 5 star guy when playing poorly and beat us but we could not replace our golden boy. Mendenhall first spotted the playing scared issue early in the AFA game. You may recall it was so obvious, The Bibster took incredible heat for stating that at that time. It surfaced again throughout early 2011 - but especially at the start of the Utah game.



BTW - I wish Heaps well at Kansas. He will be a red-shirt junior. Just about right, if he actually does have potential. And Dayne Crist, the dethroned ND phenom is doing a phenomenal job of lowering KU expectations - maybe Heaps will inherit realistic expectations if he is managing his entourage and image better. If he sets himself up to be the savior - fans will view 6-5 as a failure instead of a success. In my view - 6-5 would be a successful start and 8 or 9 wins as a senior would be spectacular and get him drafted.

Coach is trying to keep his team united and talks about it being a team effort and multiple things contributing to the poor performance - and hits the right 3 things, and gets a question about the Norm Chow UH player transfer flap and the controversial 2-point conversion call, and the coaching decision to play his injured starter over his uninjured, but inexperienced backups - does not slam anything down, doesn't yell at or ridicule anyone, does not pull out the old standard NO COMMENT, has a sense of humor about it all, manages the reporters well, does not storm out of the room, still had the team united even though some vocal fans want blood - and you could barely get through it



I get the sense that you will not be satisfied until he drags Riley Nelson out to mid-field on a stretcher Friday night and kicks him until seven independent medical authorities assure you he is dead - so the next Wunderkind in line can get started.



Never mind the fact that Hill respects and has as recently as this week been quoted about how Riley had taken him under his wing since week 1 and cheered him on. Never mind that Lark feels the same way. Never mind that all of the supposed divisiveness in the Locker Room in 2011 is clearly gone.



But even if you cannot see the value in all of that - and this though is for Taysom Hill fans only - Lark fans might cringe a little -



Bronco said, when asker yet another controversial question about starting Hill over Lark - the kind of question that if not answered carefully could divide a team -



Now get this - Riley wanting to play through the pain results in the coaches sticking to the same game-plan so that a last minute decision can be made as to whether to start Riley - as has been done the past two weeks - and since Hill us closest to Riley in style - he became the most natural fit to back-up Riley. So Hill got his shot - and nobody had to drag Lark out to mid-field and kick the crap out of him.



And the team is still UNITED. They do not QUIT.



What can we, as fans, learn from that?

I don't care how tough Riley is! Maybe I am the toughest guy on the planet, but that alone doesn't qualify me to play D1 QB. Its like toughness is Bronco's only qualifier to start on this team.



Where is the accountability on this team? You throw 4 completions and 3 pics you should sit unquestionably. You false start 5 times each game you should sit. I don't care how tough you are, how good your abs are, or how much food you eat out of the trash can, if you suck, you shouldn't play!

This post is false. Can people pleast stop using non-factual information to try to bolster their opinions.



Heaps was benched in the middle of the 3rd quarter (same time Riley was benched) during his third sub-100 PER game of the season.



He was at 98.49 against Texas, 107.84 against Utah, 74.04 against UCF and 79.95 against Utah St.



His PER in those three and half games was 92.86. He had 2 TDs and 4 INTs.



In the 2 1/2 games before Riley was rightfully benched, his PER was 107.24 with 3 TDs and 5 INTs. If you want to consider his Weber game as adequate and just look at his final 7 quarters of play, his PER was 87.50 with 2 TDs and 4 INTs.



The situations were almost identical. Both QBs sucked to the point that a change had to be made.

I have no problem with Riley Nelson starting...as long as he's 100%. We cannot deal with another game with Riley Nelson at -50%.

Fun fact. Last year, BYU's Oline (that we complained about) allowed 3.5% quarterback sacked percentage. This year, BYU is allowing a 8.82% quarterback sacked percentage (excluding the Weber game).

Bib, relative to telling posters to get unstuck, maybe your tag line of tides and boats should move to motes and beams or pots and kettles.

You say, "Riley plays _____________." ( please be equally honest, critical and objective)



RILEY PLAYS INJURED!!!

When did he sit, after he fittered away both games? After multiple turnovers? After a worse PER than Quitter boy ever had? After THE RECORD WORST PER OF ANY QB WHO EVER PLAYED 3 quarters? oh yes, he SAT, all week long until gametime. Brilliant.



I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, if you are "standing by the coach." there is some loyalty in that. Or maybe you are not an "out of the closet" apologist as you attempted to be and still are part of the Riley love-fest. I get that. I was one of the last off the Heaps train. Your prerogative.



But let's keep the stats and facts straight, as well as aspersions.



Heaps playing scared =LOSSES.

Riley playing hurt =LOSSES.
