Who is most to blame for our offensive offense?

1) QB play?

2) O-line?

3) Offensive Coaching?

The offense needs an intervention. We all applauded Bronco when he fired Jaime Hill and took over the reins and began establishing a dominant defense. That intervention has clearly paid dividends.

What is the most feasible solution for fixing our offensive ineptitude?

Please weigh in on the topic, but no choosing "all of the above"

The problem is, the problem hasn't been appropriately identified so how can the solution be created and applied.

1 & 2 trace back to 3.

The playbook has created a paranoid-schizophrenic OLine, which combined with the designed option plays and QB draws makes your QB vulnerable to injury, especially undersized ones who refuse to slide.

Someone tell me this--what has Doman done in the past 17 games to give you any hope that the offense will improve with a different OLine coach or a different QB? Here's one hint---BYU has yet to have a tailback rush for 100 yards in a game under Doman.

Our problem is that we are neither a strong run team or strong pass team. To be successful we have to be able to do both without the defense keying on our plays. Put the Qback under center and work on a 50-50 blend of run and pass.

Better yet, simply the offense to two or three formations and run 10-15 plays out of those formations instead of 9 or 10 formations running 2-3 plays from those formations.

Ultimately everything comes back to coaching including recruiting. Other than one splash - our recruiting is good but not great. Especially in areas where African Americans typically excellent. We get a few - Not enough. Also - succession planning.

We should have had an experienced center and OL in the pipeline. Sorry folks - have not had a real fullback since Fui and Manase. Should have gotten Lark reps over the years. The Heaps debacle left an experience gap - because he quit. He would have gotten a shot 2nd half of Weber State and Utah and BSU if he was here and performed. Heaven help him for pass protection, however. Tight end is emerging - but that has been an issue since Pitta and George left together. And the current crop are all same graduating class for the most part.

BYU lacks depth - of experience. It is biting them hard right now. We do not have an elite RB with experience.

Patience - fans will need it as players develop and do the best they can.

The problem is, we have an ineffective line that, in addition to not effectively blocking, has been drawing penalties at the worst possible moments. We have a quarterback that is injured and, instead of rallying the team around the second string guy for a few weeks while he heals, is falsly assuring everyone he is ok and can execute the offense. AND we have an offensive coaching staff that is allowing the above two conditions to exist without adequate correction. It's like parents who acknowledge that their children are awful, however, they immediately fold on discipline when the tears and "I hate you" begins.

Good Post! Great analogy!

A fourth option needs to be added. Head Coach (who I presume is mandating he stay in)

If not then the # 1 choice ought to be COACHING!

I think the Oline could improve maybe even 20% under the disciplined and aggressive approach that Bronco takes with his Defense!

But even if we had either Pass or Run game working, we could weave in the other. But we have neither. And we aren't magically going to find a pass game with a B wh can't spread the field and keep defenses honest. Riley can't do this when healthy. The only time we go vertical with success is in a desperate situation or when chucking it. Riley is also , I have decided , too short. He can't see very well, something, but I digress.

Coaching coaching coaching! This might be the worst offensive coaching staff we have had in the last 30 years. The only coach I trust to get the job done is Reynolds. The running backs coach is questionable because the backs have done nothing great the last 2 years. With the talent the receivers have I would have expected more. Webber should have been fired after the Utah game. And Doman is turning out to be a running joke. But he'll never get fired I am 100% sure Bronco wouldn't fire a bishop. Coaching coaching coaching!

George Bush or Jake Heaps. Take your pick....

Neither George Bush nor Jake Heaps is the reason the offense sucks this year.

Riley Nelson, Brandon Doman, the entire OL and the Mark Weber are responsible for the offense sucking this year.

I have to say 1, OL, and 2, injured QB. Although, if I see one more option to the short side of the of field, I will have to put OC as #1. Right now, I think he deserves another year. I think the QB should be gone now--clearly he is hurt and ineffective. I think the OL coach should be gone as soon as Bronco has found a replacement. That may be tough to do midseason. I say give BD one more year.

Although I do like the idea of having less formations and more plays to run out of the formations. I am a big fan of the run/pass options out of both the I and pro set formations. They allow for runs to the edges, passes to the flats, and draw plays...you know, the things we have been missing for some time. Runs up the middle aren't going to work very well (other than QB draws) because the line is soft. You can't abandon runs up the middle, but they should only occur often enough to keep the defense honest (like on second and short).

Of course, if BD were to go this year, I wouldn't shed a tear either. He hasn't done much, but I wouldn't be opposed to giving him one more year unless he keeps running that dang option to the short side of the field. If he does, fire him now!

Assigning Blame:

1. Mark Weber for not coaching technique sufficiently well to get results.

2. Mark Weber for not making a decision on who would be center until right before the opening kickoff. No cohesion on the O-Line results in stunted growth as a unit. Lack of experience for the center in calling coverages.

3. Mark Weber for not having key contributors be in physical shape at the start of Fall when they missed Spring. I can't observe from Washington DC if he's been a softy coach or has been a Bronco clone getting after their trash, but this could be related to players being unprepared for the start of Fall.

4. The O-Line for not doing their job.

5. Nelson for being selfish and taking the team down when he can't play to his capacity. Nobody would think worse of him if he sat. He's a gutsy dude; we all respect that. I don't respect insisting that he get chances to keep trying when there isn't a shred of evidence that things could turn around for him.

6. Bad luck. We're 4 points away from being 4-0, even with all of the above. Dumb luck is part of the game. Not acknowledging it when assigning blame is unfair. But it is still lower on the blame roster. In spite of all the other things on the list, the farther away I get from last Th, the better I feel about the team.

7. Doman for not bencing Nelson and over-using the option. An invalid Nelson has to be worse than a healthy Lark. And for not calling more sweeps to the tailback. Where is Pritchard?

8. Joe Dupaix for a rotten running game. Seems the only one who's working out at all is the guy who's been in the system the least amount of time.

9. Heaps (and his coddling daddy) for not manning up in the offseason before 2011 and earning the respect of his teammates, giving Nelson an entre and not preparing himself sufficiently well to play through adversity and develop touch and placement.

10. Bronco for not learning from the disastrous double QB and so coming down on Weber hard when he delayed choosing a starting center. You have to have an established pecking order for the 3 positions that call out schemes: Safety, Center and QB.
