- That's it. Only six BYU receivers were targeted last night. Six.
- BYU's PER on 3rd down was -77.60.
- After two straight of great blue zone offense. BYU's blue zone PER was 18.90.
- BYU's PER of 37.49 was the 2nd worst of a BYU game since 1987. The only worse game was Utah in 2003.
- BYU has gotten worse in every game this year on third down. They have gone from converting 10 of 17 against Washington St to 7 of 15 vs Weber St to 6 of 17 at Utah to 2 of 12 last night. The 16.7% last night was the worst 3rd Down game under Bronco.
- BYU hasn't scored a point off of an opponent turnover since the opener. Of course the defense hasn't forced a turnover in two games either.
- BYU's 13 first downs were the fewest since TCU in 2010.
- BYU is averaging 47.3 yards per punt. The previous best under Bronco was 42.2.
- Opponents are converting just 29.7% of their 3rd downs. The previous best for Bronco Defense was 32.8% in 2006.
- BYU's 41.0% on 3rd down is the worst since 33.5% in 2004.
- Fans have been clamoring for Ross Apo to be more involved, but he could help himself too. He dropped two passes that would have been first downs. Granted they were low and poor throws, but you have to take advantage of your opportunities. He also stepped out of bounds on what would have been a third first down grab. So instead of having four catches, he had one.
- Nelson fully deserved to be benched. He was failing. Injury or not, there are no excuses - just results. His play flat out wasn't getting it done. Just like last year with Jake Heaps, coaches had to make a move. Regardless of the reasons or excuses fan could or do make, a 104.17 PER over his last 10 quarters of football is just unacceptable. Players are responsible for their own performance. When they don't meet the standard over an extend period of time (and I think 2 1/2 games qualifies) the should be held accountable.
- For whatever reason, BYU's offensive coaches are confusing themselves. Players like Hoffman, Friel and Williams have shown themselves to be very effective this season, but they're not getting enough opportunities. Last night against Boise they combined for FOUR touches. FOUR. That's it. That is simply unconscionable that they would utilized to little.
- BYU has had 45 games with a PER under 100 since 1987, eight of them have occurred the last 28 games. BYU's record is 7-38 in those games.
- There need to be some shakeup on this coaching staff. I don't if there need to be firings immediately, but perhaps some shuffling of current duties. The offensive coaching staff seems to be somewhat like our current White House, full of promise and rhetoric, but it appears they might be in over their heads and aren't sure what they can do to fix/change the problems and challenges they're facing.
- A fish rots at the head. Many of these problems facing the Cougars rest at the feet of the head coach. A lack of key decisions by the head coach have severely hampered the progress and play of BYU the last three seasons. Here are just a few:
- A failure to name a starting QB in 2010. Bronco chose to name neither QB a starter, dividing the team, rushing an unprepared player into the fray.
- A failure to name the correct starting QB in 2011. He chose the player that wasn't respected by his teammates, failed to properly prepare for the season and wasn't ready for the struggles both on and off the field.
- A failure become involved with half his football team. Bronco has yet to fully engage the offense. Instead he has let it wallow in disorganization, discord among players and coaches and lacking in a true identity.
- If these problems are to be corrected, the Head Coach, must infuse himself into the offensive side of the ball.
