The worst thing about the losses.

Today you saw a coaching staff put one player on a pedastal above the other 84 players, and let him - yet again - lose a game for you because of your "admiration" for him.



If Hill/Lark gets in that game starting the 2nd half, we win that one going away.



If HIll/Lark gets in the Utah game, same thing.



Basically, the "drive" and "desire" (and utter lack of coaching to recognize an obvious situation) cost the defense the game again, when they played lights out. The coaches chose 1 player over the entire defense. That is despicable and should not be allowed to happen. These losses were avoidable, and Bronco proved to his team that he would rather screw the entire team than hold one player responsible for his mistakes.



Also, what is behind this Mike Muehlman leaving the team because the coaches are playing favorites?

I'm not sure how many coaches would have given Riley as many chances as he got in this game. The writing was clearly on the wall before they finally jerked him out. Any non-football observer could tell he was just playing terribly.



I think in the chat someone said "If you aren't a BYU fan and you are just casually watching this game, would you have any reason to think that Nelson should still be in this game?" and they were right.

I don't care how "tough" a player is, if his injury is making it so he can't perform his job, he needs to be benched. Riley is not playing like himself this year. If he isn't going to be a team player and take himself out, the coaches need to do it for him.

I don't understand why QB changes weren''t made earlier in the game given Riley's struggles and the fact that BSU realized the team was one dimensional - run only couldn't pass. For the night, Before being replaced by freshman Taysom Hill with 8 minutes left in the third quarter, Nelson had a hand in four of five BYU turnovers including a pick-six interception, BSU's only score of the game.



Nelson finished 4 of 9 for 19 yards and 3 interceptions. Hill finished 4 of 10 for 42 yards and rushed for 72 and a touchdown.



Nelson joins 26 major college quarterbacks since 2000 to have four or fewer completions and at least 3 interceptions in a game.



Hill showed that he has the extra gear to accelerate and gain yards, is tough enough to carry tacklers into the end one, and throws a tight spiral, pretty pass when he settles down. He was thrown into the fire last night, BSU has better DBs than UT, and played quite admirably.



I say start Hill so that offense of Doman can use his running and passing skill. Allow Riley a chance to heal as he has been playing hurt since Weber State game and is ineffective for long stretches at a time.

POST OF THE YEAR! Well said. Your Thomas Paine tagline quote is applicable to Bronco. The whole nation questions and scoffs while Bronco touts what? Character? loyalty to one player?

Clearly priority # 3 (or whichever one it is) about family and friends is subordinating winning football games!! End of story. No wonder Heaps left. He NEVER broke into that Inner Sanctum, and knew he never would. Muehlman left also? Who is next? Are we going to call them quitters also?

As long as Riley goes on to be Elders Quorum President one day Bronco will have done his job!

Like the whole "band of brothers" thing. It is clear that there is a favorite son among the brothers, and he gets to eat ice cream while the others do all the chores and just watch.



Or, they transfer, because they realize that it isn't exactly a fair society. Maybe the "band of bothers" thing is just so Bronco can wear a t-shirt instead of a polo to games. Like a "casual friday" approach to coaching.

The worst thing about the losses is that they were great college football games with all the drama you could ever hope for with blocked FGs, tackled punters, last minute drives, FG attempts off the uprights, stuffed fake punts, stuffed 4th downs, goal line stands, 95 yard drives, 4th down conversions, failed 2 point conversions...the list goes on.



And yet we ended up on the wrong end of both of them.

According to Doman's post-game, Riley asked for one more possession before getting benched ... and they gave it to him!

this is about where I am. both were GREAT games. BYU defense has come a long ways since the 2005 50-51 loss to TCU. I'm probably one of those that jacksonman accuses of being a BYU fan, but as a FOOTBALL fan I enjoyed both of those games. Just not the results.

Our defense is very good. Last year at Utah, they gave up because of offenseive turnovers. They weren't quite as bad this year.



Both games were winnable. Our D was good enough that neither team could put very many points on the board against us--UU scored 17 from their offense (although 7 were from a huge punt return that we should have been able to stop further back), and BSU's offense couldn't find the scoreboard. They could only score on defense.



The point is, if we have a QB that will finish drives, score TDs, and not turn the ball over, we're a really good team. We should have been able to put 31+ points up against Utah and 17+ against Boise St. We need a major offensive turnaround.



Lark would be a good quarterback--he's been sitting, watching, and practicing for years. He should know how things run by now. Hill is young--he is a better runner and also has a strong arm, but against BSU, some passes were low and others were high. Let Lark play, just to see how effective he is.
