Looking at 2013, how good will be our defense?

We are losing ELEVEN key guys on defense... Just listen to these names of players that have brought us our only joy in BYU football: Ezekiel Ansah, Romney Fuga, Preston Hadley, Braden Hansen, Uona Kaveinga, Eathyn Manumaleuna, Brandon Ogletree, Russell Tialavea, Joe Sampson, Mike Hague, Austen Jorgensen...



My guess, we are going from a top 5 national defense (overall as team not ranked in the top 25 in 2012, to illustrate how terrible this year really is, considering we have wasted the best BYU defense ever) to just average, probably somewhere in the upper 20s, lower 30s...



oh man, this hurts, for once we have a national defense and our hallmark QB/ offense is one of the worst ever

There will be a drop off but Bronco is a fantastic D coordinator. I have a feeling he will field a good defense. If we groom Taysom properly this year, he will be ready to run a good Offense next year.

Braden Hansen is an offensive lineman.



We probably lose Kyle Van Noy this year too. Everyone else there is pretty easily replaceable.



Linebackers we have S. Hadley, Stout, Alani Fua, and a couple others.



Safety we have Craig Bills to replace Sampson. He is probably better than Sampson at this point anyways.



Hague doesn't start.



Don't worry about the defense, the personnel are there and we will be good at least on defense yet again.

I hope you are right, I have really become a fan of defense, I get so excited when these guys are out there, part of why I am so upset, we are wasting this year with an amazing defense...

I hope you are right, I have really become a fan of defense, I get so excited when these guys are out there, part of why I am so upset, we are wasting this year with an amazing defense...

The year is far from wasted. We have lots of time left to rack up lots of wins. Our defense is good enough that if we clean up the turnovers, we could run the rest of the table.

This is why needs to stop playing for NEXT year. We wasted 2010 playing for next year. We wasted 2011 playing for next year and now people want us to waste 2012 as well for next year.



Start playing for THIS year.

They will be the best defense in the country in what really matters: home teaching percentage and fireside attendance/participation.

It will be a big step down, unfortunately. Luckily Bronco has been able to get a lot out of little on the defensive side of the ball. Next year is a definite regrouping year for us though, in my opinion.

I was really worried about our Dline this year, and boy was I wrong. Bronco also redshirted two JC guys, one who looked awesome in spring, and we might have Dulan and Manu back with Med redshirts now. (Cross fingers). kaufis and Peck look legit, so really just need to find a NT, which is crucial in the 3-4. Biggest gap to fill in the 2013 D in my opinion. Fuga has been awesome for us.



Add to it that we have Bills back at safety with Sorensen, and we are ok there. JJ back at one corner, and we just added a huge JC recruit to start the other. And with S. Hadley back, and maybe KVN, and we have Pikula/Unga/Stoudt at ILB, again, our D will be solid if we get Dline play. We have talent in the pipeline on D, guys that can fill gaps. Bronco has recruited for defense better than any BYU coach ever.

Not at all worried about the Defense.



We have a great DC that not only does a good job at reloading but does a great job scheming. Defense will be the highlight of 2013, again.



What's cool is if Hill stays healthy and we get an OC and OL coach that knows what they are doing, 2014 will be could very well be epic. There may finally be some balance between the two units.

LOL I'm a slow learner...

I'm glad you got that I was joking. Lesser fans would've been offended.

I love Bronco but one of my criticisms of him as a head coach, is he seems to not be fully aware of the game situation, he seems a bit removed from reality at times; distanced and disengaged, allowing the game to go wherever it goes. He's the head coach and if he tells Doman to sit Nelson in the second half of the Boise game; that one decision alone probably wins the game for him. Bronco might still be a better defensive coordinator than a head coach.



And Doman is only in his second year as OC, he too has much to learn--especially that when the game is within reach, you don't continue to play an ineffective, injured, and despondent QB. It's not like he has no options. Lark could have played, Hill did play, and considering the circumstances, he didn't do too badly. That experience will pay dividends in the future. But BYU has to reestablish its passing game; or the greatest defense in BYU history will all be for naught.

The disadvantage of being a DC distracts him from the game. Lavell only had to worry about managing the game and thinking ahead.
