Moving forward

We are all saying all types of stuff after a very frustrating game last night. There seems to be two different "groups" forming: the time to make some huge changes even possibly including Bronco, and the last night sucked but the program is still moving in a good direction.



Regardless of which "side" you are on, we have some more big games coming up and we need to move forward. So what can/should BYU do to right the ship, even if you don't think that the ship is off by much.



These would be my recommendations, in order of importance:



1) Fire Weber and find someone new to add fire and execution to the o-line. Bronco already called out the o-line for being overweight, too slow and not athletic enough. The next step would be firing Weber. If it doesn't happen tomorrow, I do think that would be a huge mistake.



2) Doman needs to improve dramatically in play-calling and Bronco needs to hold him accountable for it. Doman should be told to stop running the option and runs up the middle every other play. We have several QB;s who could come in as an RB or WR and be used as run/throw options. We need more lays down the field to open stuff up in the backfield/line of scrimmage. If this doesn't improve by the end of the season, it will be time to let him go and hire an experienced OC. The program has gone downhill with offense since Chow left.



3) QB and RB personal - Both Riley and Alisa are horrible at getting yards after the first hit, or at least making the first guy miss. Neither are extremely fast. Nelson has no arm, no pocket presence and tucks the ball every chance he gets. Foote and Williams have shown a ton of promise and potential. Lark and Hill at least have arms. I would like Nelson and Alisa to both be on a very short leash and I would like our young back-ups to get more and more reps. I would vote that Bronco officially announce that ALL offensive positions are being re-opened for evaluation and that a new two deep will be announced just prior to the next game.



4) Bronco - Need more emotion from him. Period. Need him to win with some swagger against a decent team. Need to see superior preparation. If Bronco loses to Utah St this year, let him know he has 2013 to right the ship or else. We don't need a GA to coach our football team. We need a football coach. Not ready to call for his head yet but he is on a short leash in my mind already. It wouldn't hurt for him to apologize to the fans. I can't understand a head coach who doesn't like the fans and isn't playing to keep the fans happy. Football is for the fans!



5) Join a conference - It is time to do everything we can to get into the Big-12 OR to form a new conference once the Beast fails. If the Utah game were at the end of the year, we would at least have all season to look forward to it. Now it feels like our season is pretty much over. I enjoy the flexibility of scheduling random teams all season, but that will likely result in horrible games the last two months of the season. Even if it were just an 8 team conference, we could still schedule 5 teams OOC. Heck, I would take a 6 team conference at this point to still be able to schedule 7 teams OOC. But we need a conference.



6) Start off strong and gain a killer instinct. We have started every game slow since I can remember and we tend to finish weak. Instead, lets be prepared to score TD on our first two drives, and then capitalize on our oppositions mistakes (ala Utah after the interception last night).

So what we need is instead of cleaning up the 4 plays and mental mistakes that cost us the game, we need wholesale shake up and disarray. I'll bet Bronco doesn't do any of that and you are going to be disapointed.

The O-line needs to be motivated. They were the key to the problems last night.



Doman needs to show more imagination in play calling and have it convey a sense of urgency when we have the ball (which then leads to scores). Use the "nitro" offense more, not just as a gimmick.



Make sure the team is HUNGRY for BSU ... I don't care if it is a workman-like hunger, as long as they come out to prove something.



Beyond that ... frdbtr is right.

4 plays?? Did you not watch the game? You are right that I would not be satisfied even if we would have won that game in overtime on such a gift from the U, with the U playing so many #2's and after getting beat by USU. A win by two touchdowns at a minimum is what I expected. They didn't have White, their #1 and ONLY offensive weapon.



We had so many lucky breaks this game, and the better team, and all of our starters, and still lost. This game was SO much more than 4 plays. I can't believe you would have been satisfied by barley beating a bad Utah team on a gift.



In addition, there always seem to be those 4 plays against every good team we play lately. A pattern of chocking is more than just fixing 4 plays. It requires drastic change of mentality, preparation and personnel.

I don't see Weber lasting beyond this year. Position coaches getting fired mid-season is very rare, and probably shouldn't be done. And really, do we want Reynolds to be the line coach again (not his best position at coaching).

Well it seems a lot of "good" teams choke against other "good" teams that is why they are considered "good" teams

if you are to be considered a good team, eventually you should be the one making the other team choke...BYU doesn't do that.

Come on dude, this was Utah's second string team and we looked absolutely horrible. There's no reason why we should have been within 4 bad plays of losing this game to begin with.
