Where did our "saved" playbook go?

For the past several years, when our offense starts the season slow and the play calling is below average at best, Bronco/Riley/Doman supporters come out fists flying that we are saving the playbook for our bigger games, especially the U. Sad thing is I actually bought into it this year.

Was it just me or did our play calling seem even more vanilla than our first two games? Although we were going to fake a punt, and we did go for it on a few 4th downs, the actual play calling was horrible. How many options do we run at an average of 1 yard per carry before we realize it is not working? Why did our TE production drop so drastically? Why wasn't Apo's name ever called? Where did the Hill wildcat go the first half? How about a reverse or a HB toss or anything that we haven't already used in our very limited play selection?

I am no longer buying into the saving plays for bigger game excuses.

I'm sure Bronco and his mindless fans/followers will come up with something else to take this argument's place.

Funny thing is we played a lot better defense and still almost hit our averages........ Make of what you will I guess......

The Doman promotion has been an overreach and needs to be corrected.

I remember Doman preaching unpredictability and explosiveness. I don't see how running the option 8 times, especially to the short side of the field, is either. I don't see how every play developing behind or around the line of scrimmage is either. It is way too easy to prepare for our O, making us look average at best.

Doman's offense is boring and plane vanilla. At least Anae's had a bit of vanilla bean mixed in with it and maybe some sprinkles. I was thinking the same thing last night. Where is the prolific offense? Where is the open play book?

For the record, I thought Doman was a bad hire two years ago.

Sad when a 24 year old first time OC seems to understand better than Doman. I am tired of this program as a whole. One major let down after another.

I wish we had Anae back. I have to admit the Doman experiment has been a failure. He's never looked good calling plays.

I completely agree. I have been entirely unimpressed with Doman. He fails to taylor an offense to what the defense is bringing, lacks explosive plays, lacks ingenuity. He was out called last night by Brian J. Let's face it, BYU has mediocre athletes with a few exceptions. We'll never be the team we use to be without bringing back that type of offense. Texas Tech was and West Virgina is a BYU spin off and look how many points they score. We actually have a defense now that can keep us in games. I actually felt bad for the defense last night.

On another note, I don't understand why Doman hasn't branched out his QB options. The hype of Heaps but BYU in a bad position that they are still suffering the effects of. Why haven't they ever tried Lark, a good athlete himself, who can actually throw the ball. Reports were saying he outplayed Riley last year in spring camp. Riley can't throw the ball, can't hold onto the ball with his small hands, never throws the ball away, makes poor decisions all the time, and doesn't have field vision. There's something wrong when Apo was catching a TD a game before the QB switch and now doesn't even get thrown to. Did anyone else see how open Apo was down the field on that last throwing play? I just hope he doesn't transfer before we get a QB (Hill) who can actually throw him the ball.

Technically Johnson didn't out call Doman. Look at the offensive stats.

It's still time for the offense shake up.

Because this coaching staff cares more about character and feel good stories than they do about talent and winning. Would anyone be shocked if Apo transferred?

If I were Apo, I would transfer.

Don't you think part of the problem with the limited playbook is actually Riley's doing?? You have to call plays to Rileys strengths knowing he can't throw the ball down field with consistency. Using Lark would actually allow Doman to open things up a little more. On the last pass play of the game when Riley threw the ball up in the air for grabs if you watch Apo or Hoffman, can't remember who, at the top of the field, he has his man beat and headed down the sideline for what would have been an easy TD pass, a pass Lark could have easily made. Riley panicks and just trys to get rid of the ball. Everybody knows our field goal unit sucks but if Riley hits Apo/Hoffman in stride it's a TD and the game is over. Riley is terrrible at making reads and is also terrible at using his lineman to avoid pressure it's like he has no pocket awareness or know how to extend a pass play. Any sort of pressure and Riley fly's the coop. Go watch Lark vs Weber State - on a couple plays he feels pressure and rolls out giving him more time to pass the ball. Everybody knows Riley should have been removed in the 3rd quarter of last nights game but Bronco refuses to see what's in front of his face. Hard work can only get you so far when your talent has been maxed out

He has another "quitter" that knows how to use him, and a coach that actually recognizes talent for what it is, and would welcome him with open arms... If I were Apo, it would be an easy decision. He has a redshirt open. He'd play with a Senior qb that knows him and recognizes his talent at a recognizable school, as a junior. That's a 100% no brainer. I hope he doesn't cause we need him, but if I were RIley I would buy Apo flowers and promise him the moon right now. And I wouldn't even wait til monday. We are at a legitimate risk of losing him.

Apo is NOT the answer. He is completely overrated right now. In his career, he has a total of 38 catches on 85 targets and 9 TDs, with a RER of 118.07. He's not that good. He's shown flashes, but he disappears.

Anyone who actually thought BYU of all schools was saving some special or trick plays is a fool. Sorry, it's that simple. Bronco eats, drinks, and sleeps general conference vanilla flavor.

With Lark inserted at QB - Doman looks better because he can call more plays (open the playbook), Apo would get more touches because Lark can get him the ball and we may just win more games. EVERYBODY'S HAPPY!!!!

Our offensive Coordinator did his job. We outperformed utah offensively and defensively. The special teams failed us, or offensive line failed us. As far as the open play book. I am wondering if our playbook would look better if Riley wasn't looking for Hoffman on every play. He said as much on the 4th and 12 play, said him and hoffman drew that up on the sideline. utah's defense was good enough and had riley so uncomfortable that he quit making his reads and just looked for hoff. I have heard multiple sportscasters say that apo and friel were constantly open. Riley must not have been looking for them.

You are right. Apo is NOT the answer, he is the question.

The answer is an oline that can block a 4 man rush regularly, and a qb that can get the ball to his receivers against a top 75 defense.
