Reasonable expectations vs. program goals

Not a pouty thread. Don't worry.



Just wondering what you think are reasonable expectations for the football program, and how those match up with Bronco's and other's stated goals (NC, BCS bowls, national exposure, etc.) Can cougar fans really reasonably expect those things to come to fruition? Do you think the powers that be who run BYU (everybody from Bronco, to Holmoe, to the VP's and on up) are willing to do what it takes to achieve those? Do they have reasonable expectations, given the many obstacles that confront the program? Can we, as fans, really expect to have a program that is competitive with the likes of Alabama and Oregon?



It's easy to be optimistic during the off season, or when looking towards some far off future, but sometimes a loss helps ground you back to reality and evaluate how far you've come vs. how much is left to go.



So, what are reasonable expectations for BYU football?

win out.

Armed Forces bowl for the foreseeable future. Anywhere from 7-9 wins per season. Zero wins over anyone with a winning record. Boat loads of hype coming from coaches and message boards. Boise St replacing Utah as our rivalry game that's "just another game".

I think Cougarbib is onto something about our schedule. We can win the big games once in a while but not consistently. Even when we're supposed to win. It tells me we've over-scheduled BIG TIME next year.

There is no reason, with this defense, that BYU shouldn't have a chance in every game this year. The talent is better than ever before. We should all have lofty expectations for this team. That's why everyone takes it so hard after a ridiculous loss like this one. Utah has been to the BCS twice, they are really that much more talented than BYU? I don't think so.

So, what are reasonable expectations for BYU football?

My expectation is the same as the administration's. Win against decent to bad teams and only beat good team when they are kind enough to play you at a neutral site or your house. With Bronco we have set up a low ceiling and we have hit it.
