I'd love to see a team...

...coached by some of the armchair coaches on here. I'd be curious to find out how many have played or coached football at any level, and especially how many have taken on a head coaching role at any level above peewee.

I'm not a "Bronco can do no wrong" kinda guy. I think he needs to treat the rivalry differently and accept it for what it is. Looking at the seasons he's coached, he obviously does a very good job in general, but doesn't understand that coaching a rivalry game like this one has to be done differently than any other game. You have to prepare your players for the atmosphere and emotion that inevitably will be present so that they can play without jitters and butterflies early.

Anyway, some people are trying to put everything on Bronco, which isn't even remotely fair. Yes, the loss falls on him, and his name will forever be tied to this loss and previous losses, but to put the center's individual mistake on Bronco? To put the missed kick from 32 yards on Bronco? Nah, I don't buy it. Sure, you can say that in some roundabout way that it all ties back to the head coach, and in way you'd be right, but realistically a coach can't be blamed for every little execution error that individuals make on the field.

Me: "Ugh, this cheeseburger tastes awful!"

THAT guy: "I'd like to see YOU open a successful franchise of cheeseburger stores."

Me: "Because having taste buds doesn't make me good enough to judge food?"

HAHA!! Awesome! And exactly right!

I sometimes wonder if only knowing football one's life actually can blind one to things that others who aren't so involved might see (lack of emotion, play calling, etc.). Kind of like politicians.

That's a low blow to compare politicians to Bronco.

Oh, that's right, because just as we eat and evaluate food every single day of our lives since birth, we also play and evaluate specific nuances, schemes, coaching styles, etc. of sports.

It's fine by me if you "I think the team lacked emotion" or "our O-line needs to be more disciplined."

But with some of the spouting off in here, it would be you walking into a burger joint, going back to the kitchen, and telling them they're using the wrong kind of oil to cook the fries, that their stock ordering system should be changed, that they should take items off their menus, that they should change their color schemes and uniforms, that they should be using a different oven for convection, etc. etc. etc.

Getting a cheeseburger and evaluating that it tastes bad is like watching a football game and saying "gee, we should win instead of lose."

Terrible, absolutely terrible comparison.

Mars - you want fries with that comment - and supersize it?

I wouldn't, going 4-8 against similar competition under crowton sucked. I love what Bronco has done with the program. If his record against the utes was reversed everyone would be worshipping the ground he walks on. He needs to revisit how he treats the rivalry and get that part of his coaching reversed.

Total agreement here. It's like a difference between, "Man we could have done X,Y, and Z to win" and "I knew that X,Y, and Z were needed all along. Let me instruct you and thus set up a giver-to-receiver relationship of information transfer."

Bingo! It's not as if Bronco is trying everything with his team in the rivalry game and it isn't working, it's that he keeps doing the same thing for 8 years in a row, and we get the same results each year. It makes no sense but he keeps doing it...

How do you know he prepares exactly the same way every year for the utah game? Because he says the same thing in the media every year? Are you involved in his game prep every year and know exactly what he does? This is why armchair coaching irritates me so much. Fans spout off about things that we know nothing about.

Maybe he is praying different is private before the game but everything the public sees and hears is the same, including strategy, outcome and emotion. Maybe it is time to start doing some major things differently.

He needs to treat the rivalry game differently. He needs to accept it for what it is: The most emotion-fueled game in the country. He needs to prepare players to deal with that emotion and use it as focused energy to dominate the Yew. I'm a huge Bronco fan, but it's obvious that the rivalry game has become his weak point.

Spending hours each year watching BYU play kind of does put you in a position to judge or know what could be done better. People can recognize patterns and tendencies rather intuitively.

Case in point. After Alisa got stuffed the 4th time on the option my wife (watches maybe 5 hours of football a year) asked, "Why do we keep running that play. Clearly it isn't working." Doman, of course went on to run it over and over and over. My wife doesn't know it's an option play, nothing about blocking, etc. But it's pretty easy to see it wasn't working.

Because we have had the same results for the past 8 years.

Maybe the wife could be an offensive consultant.

Tell her - IDK for sure, because I am more of a basketball kind of guy, but perhaps they are running that to make Utah position themselves to stop it and that is what enables Cody Hoffman to get 1 on 1 coverage and keep getting open. Tell her that us also why Nelson tucks and runs on occasion.

No, we haven't. In 05 BYU got down big (I think it was 24-3 or 24-7 at half time) then made a furious charge to send it into overtime, lost in overtime. in 06 BYU got off to a fast start, was up 14-0 before utah took over and BYU had to wake up at the end of the 3rd through the 4th to win. In 07 BYU dominated only to see BJ make a final drive causing us to have to drive the field to score in order to win, in 08 we matched them score for score in the 1st half until Max started throwing completions to the wrong team, in 09 BYU dominated but utah like always made a come back forcing overtime. In 10 BYU dominated early was leading 13-0 until a 4th Q melt down caused by stupid turnovers, in 11, BYU fell completely apart starting on the 1st play. This year, BYU was driving to take the lead when the turnover bug bit us again. The same thing doesn't happen every year, BYU hasn't lost 8 years in a row, every game unfolds differently. The only thing that happens every year is the games are very close unless BYU falls apart. That is what needs to change. That is why I have been harping that this is a mental issue and needs to be addressed as such. Bronco is NOT doing things exactly the same every year, he is not that stupid.

And yet, when Hill and Williams ran it--yet again--we scored a touchdown.

Some plays get run for a spcific purpose. Perhaps to keep a D honest, perhaps to set up another play. That option play was to ensure that they were not cheating on the pass. RN needed that help.
