How come we can nevrr get a kicker to make it in the clutch????

probably because it's actually a very difficult skill to master, especially doing it "in the clutch".



But really, you'd think that this would be a position BYU would be great at recruiting.

Putting your punter in to kick a field goal with the game on the

line is never a good thing.

Taysom would have made it.

Forget the clutch, we can't ge a kicker to make a FG even in a regular "low-pressure" situation.



Remember, the doink2 wasn't BYU's only missed FG of the night.

Agreed. Poor, poor over-site by BYU coaches. This has been a problem the last two years. You'd think they would do something about it.

Everyone on our staff falls in love with speed and athleticism and seemingly fails to look for a kicker. We need to heavily recruit a kicker. None of this walk on crap. Every year over the past several I can point to where we blew at least one game because of a missed or blocked FG. At least it seems like that. I posted a topic on this very subject over a year ago. Boise St shorted itself somewhere on the order of 20 million bucks because of choke kickers. Yeah, it's hard to call Brotzman a choke when you look at his career but when he had to have one at Nevada, he missed twice (one from inside extra point range). Dude last year vs TCU wasn't even close. They hit both of those they're in BCS big money games.

I think we are toast down the road on this issue also. There is a Edwards kid who is on his mission who has a scholarship to BYU as a kicker when he gets off. He's from Hurricane. Note the last name and you see why he got the schollie. He's okay - for a high school kicker. But definitely not college material. Only got the scholarship because of his blood ties.



I guess I should give the kid half a chance. But his Dad is such a prick, it's hard to like the kid.

Sorenson was recruited and schollied. Not sure about Stephenson, but I kinda thought he was, too.

Sorenson was pretty good his Fr year and had a lot of promise pre-mission. Never really got back in the same shape afterward due to mission injuries and rust, then it sounds like he tried to be a hero in the weight room and messed up his back.

The coaches did recruit a kicker and recruited well. Sometimes stuff happens and it doesn't turn out like you'd want it.

There's a lot of luck involved in going undefeated--in a multitude of dimensions.

Riley Stephenson was actually Justin Sorenson in high school before Justin Sorenson was Justin Sorenson.



Riley was also routinely kicking 55+ yard FGs in high school and kicking the ball off through the endzone.

Both of our kickers were recruited and Sorensen was a 3 star highly touted recruit. Injuries and mission have hurt his effectiveness.

What other "highly touted" kickers have we recruited since? We recruit QB's, RB's and every other position every single year. Why any different with Kickers?

Usually only one scholarship at a time. Maybe a senior and a freshman. Teams are careful with their limited scholarships.
