bronco needs to go back to just being the dc

He is a great dc! He constantly gets outcoached by top coaches and top teams. He always struggles against Utah and just takes a "its just another game approach" it kills me

Amen and he clearly doesn't have a nose for making great hires. Que the excuses...3...2...1...

He's a GREAT defensive coordinator. I just don't know if he's the level of Head Coach we need to break through. I want to believe in the guy but year after year....

I think Bronco needs to react like he did after USU two years ago--shake up the staff and send a message. Starting with Doman and Weber would be a good start. Promote Reynolds to interim OC, send Doman down to QB coaching, and bring in John Tait to coach the offensive line. In the offseason go get an OC who understands blocking schemes and smashmouth football and who won't try to make the playbook into an encyclopedia of everything everyone else in college football is doing.

I thought about this as I was watching the game tonight. There needs to be a shakeup on the offensive side of the ball.

Why would you bring in John Tait? I get it he was a high draft pick, he's a BYU guy, he had a decent pro career but where is the coaching experience? Lets get a coach in there that is seasoned and knows how to coach not just a coach who played for the school and went into the NFL. Hell Alabama has a lot of great former players and there coaching staff isn't made up of a bunch of former players. Lets hire the best coach.

1) We did go out and hire the best available coach we could afford when we got Weber--BYU isn't going to pay top dollar for coaches, and the HC limits their "finding" pool.

2) From my experience with John Tait, I think he's more than capable of getting our OLine to play aggressively, which is their biggest shortcoming.

3) Our other former players who are serving as position coaches/grad assistants seem to be working out very well--Reynolds/Cahoon/Kafusi. The only one that's arguably a whiff is Doman.

4) If we fire Weber, we need someone to come in now, and I doubt you're going to find anyone else better qualified waiting for the call 3 weeks into the season.

Then again, others are saying Bronco needs to take more control over the offense too...

I think I would be Roger French in there and take BD out. Scovil should replace Crowton.

I think Bronco is aware of the issues his staff is going through right now, and perhaps wanted to make changes sooner, but was told not to. People have to remember how poitical things can be at BYU.



Let's recap though:



Fired Coach Hill, replaced with Poppinga to coach OLBs.

Did not renew Anae. Promoted Doman to OC/QB Coach

Did not renew Higgins, replaced with Ben Cahoon

Moved Reynolds from RB Caoch to TEs, added Dupaix as RBs coach.

DuPaix took over recruitng duties from TIdwell.



Adding Cahoon was awesome, and we can see the benefits. DuPaix as well, is doing a solid job, and Reynolds is getting that TE group to perform now. Only change people have issues with is how Doman is struggling. For two reasons :poor Oline play, and in big games, poor QB play.



Poor Oline play can be addressed. Poor QB play in big games will be addressed after 2012, if not sooner due to injury.



Fact is, since 2006, BYU has struggled with having eleite QB play in the biggest games. MAx struggled in big games, Heps did, and Riley is. In spite of that, we still won a few, but typically lose. In order to reach teh next level, we need our QBs to do the same.



When that happens, BYU takes the next step.

But how much of BYU QBs struggling in big games was due to poor play calling and prep?



Yes, Max coughed up the ball several times one year. That's on Max. But I suspect a lot of our recent QBs' poor performances had to do with poor preparation for the "big" opponents. Focus is on "not making mistakes" and out "executing" opponents. Not coming up with a scheme to out maneuver your opponent.
