What is Bronco's hang up with the yewts?

Why is it that the Cougs look so poorly coached every time they play yewtah?

The players come and go. Coordinators come and go. Bronco is the only constant.

So what is it that is holding Bronco back from coaching a good game against yewtah? It's not about play calling. It's the mental game. I no longer will be able to predict a cougar victory with any confidence against yewtah regardless of which players suit up for either team.

I feel bad for Bronco because he obviously doesn't know how to coach his players for their rivalry game.

"Its just another game" that is the hang up. Have a little fire like Whittingham and maybe the team will respond. It's a rivalry game, not Sunday school.

It's not that Bronco treats it like just another game in and of itself, it's that our team isn't prepared to handle to jitters of it not being another game. This game is different and we need to prepare for it differently and treat it differently.

It's not just Utah.

We look average against any slightly above average team. Bronc sucks at getting his team ready for good games.

What sucks even worse is BYU will go onto win 7+ games this season against the cupcakes and we'll go bowling and Bronco will continue to coach how he coaches.

We're under prepared and it shows against good teams.

Exactly, you'll see on Thursday as well against a slightly above average BSU team. Bronco gets a pass because fans only demand wins whose quality does not matter. My expectations have finally dropped on a permanent basis for the program with Bronco at the head.

Whitt wants it more and BM thinks he can half fast it when everyone else is working overtime to get it done. BM #5 is not good enough anymore to the fans. If you want to do fireside instead of coaching then go do that and let someone else come in and coach with football alittle higher on his list.

It's not about the priorities, any coach worth his salt will have the same priority list at BYU. It's about seeing the rivalry differently.

I'll buy into that but do you think that another coach would be stupid enough to come out and say that its #5 on the list?

Doesn't matter to me if the coach communicates with the fans or not, just win. Bronco usually does, but he needs to change how he prepares for the rivalry. I think the rivalry record, despite everything good he does, leaves a cloud hanging over otherwise fantastic seasons.

Winning matters most. Good communication still matters though.

If communication is so important, why do we jump all over a coach for communicating priorities? Some of this fan base lives by the motto "ignorance is bliss." The priorities have always been the same at BYU (excluding the Crowton era...) and no one said jack about Lavell.

Fans rage and complain when coaches only speak in "coach speak" then they rage and complain when a coach is frank and honest, if it doesn't fall in line with what they think the coach should have said. It really is a no win situation.

BYU being poorly prepared for the rivalry game didn't start with Bronco. It started with Lavell in his last few years -- since 1993 (with '96 being the sole exception). I honestly don't understand it. But, the fact of the matter is that Yewtah prepares and plays like this is the last game on earth that they will ever play and their lives depend on it. BYU prepares and plays like its another game on the schedule. It's got to be a cultural thing and maybe Bronco is taking his cues from Lavell (I know he has talked to Lavell about prepping for this game). One thing is obvious (and it should have been obvious after last year's debacle), what Bronco is doing DOESN'T WORK and he needs to change it. He won't get fired for it, but his legacy is certainly tarnished because of it and the fan base will become increasingly disinterested in the program. Not to mention the fact that recruiting will be more difficult. It has to be ingrained in the program that losing to Yewtah is UNACCEPTABLE!! You'd think they would tire of losing to Yewtah after only one time, but it is now three times in a row! I'm absolutely shocked by it, especally after last year's fiasco.

Difference is LaVell didn't have executive practices. LaVell didn't hire dumb consultants that came in and told him he could be just as effective by practicing less and to get the most out of his staff/players he needed to take a less is more approach.

LaVell didn't boil down the success of his offense to a couple of stats.

As far as I know, LaVell never said, "Things look good, we're canceling practice," and then go on to look completely under prepared against a BCS team the second game of the season.

The priorities may have been the same under LaVell as they are under Bronco, but LaVell didn't let anyone know and certainly didn't shout it from the roof tops that football was 5th. LaVell was content letting the fan base believe football was a top priority.

Bronco openly talked about it being 5th (he's back peddled a bit to counter the negative perception) and then went on to decrease practice time, cancel practices, and reduce things down to stats. If BYU wins, no one complains about the approach and everyone heralds him as a genius. Problem is, it doesn't work. At least not against quality opponents. Hence the negative perception among fans that Bronco doesn't care about beating the Utes.

So, communication is actually a bad thing (and let me also point out that Lavell coached in a very different era where we didn't learn every little thing about every practice, way before twitter and social media).

Depends entirely on what's being communicated and there's no such thing as no communication.

Sitting on the couch not talking to your wife sends a very strong message as does buying her flowers every week, and the meaning of both those messages depends on your wife.

LaVell not talking about football being 5th on the depth chart still communicated something to the fans: football is top priority. The complete opposite of what Bronco communicates.

Last I checked Bronco isn't on Twitter. Doesn't have a Tumblr account, a Facebook page, or personal blog. Fine, some rabid fan or non-fan may tweet out something Bronco says similar to what happened to Romney this week, but if Bronco takes a bit more care in what he says openly as Romney should have then Bronco can avoid setting the wrong expectations. Why else do you think even more practices this year were closed to the public?

Bronco's football 5th on the priority list comments, cancelled practice confirmations, reports of consultants, etc. didn't come from whistle-blower tweets. Those came straight from the horses mouth to a room full of reporters.

If you can't see that Twitter and social media have vastly changed the landscape of reporting, sports reporting specifically, then I can't help you.

Good communication is good. Bad communication is bad. Telling your "bosses" that doing the job you were hired to do isn't one of your top priorities is bad communication. In a job interview, for example, that would be suicide. Foolish and not smart.

Schmoe, I make a decent living off of manipulating Twitter, Facebook and the press. It's what I do, so the signifigance of social media isn't lost on me one bit. It's a communications channel. What goes out over the channel can be manipulated.

I've got my TweetDeck open now, monitoring and responding to what gets put out over Twitter related to the company I work for. I pump the channel with information I want disseminated. I get people of influence to Tweet about what I want, all in an effort to set a certain perception and drive a specific response.

Twitter isn't the Wild West of communication it's made out to be. What goes out over Twiiter can be influenced just like the rumor mill could be influenced before there was Twitter.

Please, tell me though, what gets communicated over Twitter regarding football being 5th on the list? Willing to bet none of it is directly from Bronco. Some of it may be in reference to articles written by journalists, which reference conversations they've had with Bronco. The rest are fans complaining and referencing what they've read from journalists.

You don't want something talked about on Twitter. Don't talk about it.

Except in the case of BYU, where, when they were looking for a new coach, wanted to hire someone who wasn't going to be putting football first and above all else.
