ND's AD on the move from the Big East to the ACC for all non-football sports:

We are able to...provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports.

Translation: We need an easier hoops conference so we can get to the NCAA more often and with better seeding.

In all seriousness, it seems that the Big East TV deal was going to give ND some headaches with its NBC football deal, even though ND football isn't in the Big East, so they took their ball elsewhere.

ACC hoops is easier than Big East???? Um, NO!

I think the bigger question is how will this affect our future games with ND. It appears that part of the agreement is 5 ACC football games per year, and they already have yearly series with other schools (USC, Michigan State, etc.).

ND will stay Indy with football. I mean, can ou imagine how much history and tradition would be set aside of ND takes football to the fledgling ACC. Which non-Conf games do they cut out? USC? MSU? Stanford?

This makes me glad BYU didn't rush things and join the Big East.

With Pitt and Syracuse and now Notre Dame moving to the ACC, I would suggest that ACC hoops will be better than Big East hoops!

Perennial Powers/NCAA Tourney Qualifiers

ACC

Duke

North Carolina

Pitt

Syracuse

Notre Dame

Big East

Georgetown

UConn

Louisville

Marquette

The losses of Pitt, Syracuse, and Notre Dame will hurt Big East basketball. If Louisville bolts from the Big East, then it's no question that the ACC is better.

Could the ACC have its eyes on UConn for a 16th Olympics sports member to balance the schedule with Notre Dame?

It might be hard to get 4 games against Notre Dame from 2014-2020. (BYU road games at Notre Dame in 2012 and 2013 are 2 out of 6 through 2020.)

I assume that the earliest that ND would join the ACC is 2014. Per FBSchedules, Notre Dame already has 9 games solidified on the 2014 schedule with 4 other known opponents but games TBD, including BYU. Notre Dame would already have to drop a game/opponent to have a 12 game schedule (unless they play Navy oversees and qualify for a 13th game - even possible?). Only two of those games are against ACC teams (Pitt and Syracuse). Perhaps the ACC will allow Notre Dame to phase in the 5 ACC game commitment.

In 2015, Notre Dame has 10 games solidified with Boston College TBD. Currently four ACC games (Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College, and Wake Forest).

ND non-ACC annual or frequent matchups include USC, Stanford, Navy, Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan. Michigan has already put a two-year hiatus on the ND-Michigan game (on a side note, isn't it stupid that Michigan is putting its rivalry with Notre Dame on hold and Utah is doing the same with BYU so Michigan and Utah can play each other???).

That's 5 or 6 games every year for ND outside of the ACC. You add 5 ACC games and Notre Dame all the sudden won't have a lot of scheduling flexibility for BYU anymore.

This is huge for the ACC and may have just saved the conference. ACC teams are not going anywhere at this point. Consider the ACC stable at this point.

The Big12 must feel stupid about now. if they wanted acc teams they had to do that before this happened. fsu, vt, goergia tech and co are not going anywhere anymore. I wouldn't even be surprised if virginia tech turned down an sec invite at this point.

This may lead to the cancellation of byu games that we had scheduled but hopefully not.

in terms of expansion it will probably only happen if conferences need to improve their sos to compete with the sec.
G

The ACC is a lot more stable now too, because the exit fee is now $50 million.

I don't see the PAC 12, SEC, or Big Ten looking to expand at all. ACC might add one more team to balance out the Olympic sports' scheduling....but then 15 football members would make football divisions weird...but Notre Dame deal would help with scheduling.

The best candidate for expansion among the power conferences is still the Big 12. I don't think Larry Scott, Jim Delaney, or Mike Slive would just sit back and allow the Big 12 to have the same access to the playoff as the other big boy conference without having a conference championship. OR, without the conference championship, the Big 12 will be effectively penalized in the polls and in the computers regardless. The Big 12 will realize that it needs and wants a championship game. It will need to go back to 12 teams. With ACC candidates (FSU, Clemson, etc.) seemingly stable and no longer within the Big 12's reach, I would think that BYU and Louisville are still the top expansion candidates for the Big 12. How long it takes the Big 12 to make a move is anyone's guess.

I also think that the Big East could be on its last legs. If the coast-to-coast experiment doesn't work out, we could see MAJOR realignment among the lower-tier conferences. I could see most of the football leftovers of the Big East breaking off to form a new conference and recruiting the best from MWC, C-USA, MAC, or Sun Belt....which would trickle down to fuel more expansion after the fall out.

It is interesting to see how most BYU fans don't recognize the implication this has for BYU.

Where will BYU be when the conference realignment dust settles?

I would think you guys would be concerned about that.

We recognize it. We are just really tired of speculation. BYU is an odd duck and a conference really has to want the cougars to accept the no-Sunday-play thing. And, BYU is not dumb enough to sign away TV rights again. So we all just sit here and see stories like this and say, meh, we'll see what happens.

Utah fans should simply consider themselves that lucky byu is a mormon affiliated school.

I'll tell you what it means for BYU:

1) Big East is not happening, unless BYU get desperate. Really desperate.

2) Big XII is best BCS conference chance right now, but not until 2014.

3)IF BYU is not in the Big XII by 2015, they are Indy for a long, LONG time.

4)If BYU stays Indy, scheduling will be more difficult for BYU because the PAC, ACC, Big XII all went to 9 Conf games, and most BCS leagues will not want to play BYU in November (With rare exceptions).

5) If Indy scheduling was an issue for ND (as they cited), it certainly is for BYU.

Dan Wetzel from Yahoo!Sports claims that Notre Dame scheduling was THE issue for the ACC-Notre Dame deal:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaab--notre-dame-protects-treasure-football-schedule-in-move-to-acc.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I actually like upcoming Indy schedules and don't mind NMSU/Idaho in November, as long as we get Wisconsin or Notre Dame road trips in November and we still a trip to Hawaii every other year (I'm actually fine playing road games in November, because weather makes LES a less desirable location that time of year anyway. I would much rather have home games in September than November).

I realize that I am probably in the minority. So, is this doomsday to most Cougar fans?

We should still be able to get 4-5 good games in late August and September every year. October should be okay, with ACC and Big East schools on the schedules in 2013 and 2014. Should continue. What if we get November game against Big East and C-USA every year. Utah State in November?

Sorry Hawk - this announcement seems to have little, if any, effect on the football side of BEAST WEST. ND football never was and never was going to be in The Big East.

Bottom line for BYU:

PAC 14 or 16 would be the best situation for all sports. It really would. Simply would be. Problem is that this option is not there for BYU and is very low probability in the future. But, stuff happens.

Big 12 would be the next best option for all sports. It really would. Simply would be. Problem is that this option is not there for BYU. There is a little bit better chance of this becoming a possibility than PAC - but there are strong forces of resistance. But,bstuff happens.

The next best option is either what we have now or Beast West. Really. It simply would be.

The ND announcement affects both, but quite frankly, it hurts Independent Football far more than it hurts Beast West football. And a hybrid is also very possible with football in BEAST WEST and keeping the WCC arrangement.

And if BYU had joined The Big East - or does so now, that would not prevent Big II or PAC 14 if they ever wanted us. It did not keep TCU from going Big II without ever playing a game in The Big East. It may have even made them more attractive than sitting in The MWC. Ask BSU how fast you can change from WAC to MWC to Big East to whatever ends up being next for them.

If anything - Independent Foitball - due to possible ND scheduling issues - just took a dip. Big East West football did not. Logic in your post does not make sense. Big East basketball - sure - yet another hit. I like that. Parity is great.

This announcement has little affect on BYU - irrespective of what the Ute a few posts ago said. It does not create any kind of demise for Big East football, either.

And, if it causes Big II and Big 10 to give up on dreams of someday landing ND football - and they quit holding a spot and further expand - well that will create potential slots for BYU or Big East teams to defect to. If that happens - then Big East football would be hurt - but if that happens and BYU is still not taken by PAC, Big II, or Big 10 - well that pretty well sums up our long-term future.

Right now - The Bibster thinks this change or any other change that creates instability and land grabbing could help BYU far more than it could hurt whether BYU remains Independent or joins a conference.

And, if ND wants to keep their home games but cancel their trips to Provo - give them the finger. If they want to cancel a couple of the games in South Bend but still come to Provo - thank them. 2 for 1 was stupid in the first place.

I think UT4Big12 might be a Texas fan, not a yewt...

I think having ND no longer available as a long shot wish of the Big 12 to add as a full conference member may help BYU finally get an invite. Maybe the Big 12 had been waiting around for this final chip to fall and were pressuring ND to join based on some knowledge of what's going on in the Big East for their other sports. It seems only logical that the Big 12 is going to have to be at 12 members when the playoff take effect. They need two members. ND isn't coming. Now who do they go after?

It's a non-issue in how it effects BYU. If Notre Dame football had also joined the ACC, that would be big news. But this? No.

Of course, that won't stop the local radio talking heads from making a big issue out of it. As well as those BYU fans who can't sleep at night unless BYU is in a conference.
