Keys for Defeating Utah

Some thoughts after watching our first two victories over WSU, and the keys to our success.



1. OL must protect Riley and not allow him to take hits while throwing and minimize the amount of times that he has to run past the line of scrimmage to escape pressure.

2. DL must stop the run and get penetration into the backfield. Utes are a run first, pass second team. We stop the run and they don't have good second options.

3. D must constantly pressure Hays like they did with Tuel and Hoke. He should hear footsteps before every release and receive a legal hit after every throw. Will cause rushed or errant throws and allow our DBs to shine.

4. OL must keep UT honest with the run game as a viable option.

5. QB must spread the ball around to TEs, RBs and WRs - it will be difficult to cover everyone that can be a weapon.

6. No turnovers - will provide momentum and confidence for Yewts.

7. Special teams - Stephenson must pin Yewts deep in their territory on punts, make all FGs, extra points, and we must have great coverage on returns/punts - no big plays.

8. TEAM MUST MAINTAIN COMPOSURE/FIRE for 4 quarters - no slow starts.

9. Hill should be used early and often to keep Yewts off balance.

10. Need to score TDs in the BLUE ZONE - don't settle for only FGs.

That's it. Assuming the OL won't make any drastic improvements in the next week, the keys to winning the game are:



1. Riley making quick throw. We need some slants and screen passes. Don't give Utah time to get to Riley.

2. Nitro offense. Utah couldn't keep up with USU when they went into hurry up mode. Unfortunately, USU couldn't maintain the pace either. I like to think we can.

3. DL. We need constant pressure on Utah's QB. Constant. Bronco needs to mix the looks up keep Utah's baby-faced OC guessing and puzzled.

we dont' need constant pressure. I'm fine with rushing 3 or 4 on occasion and getting the coverage sack.

Come out with more fire and desire than the yewts for the first time in over a decade.

If we do 1, 2, and 3 and 10% of the rest we will be fine.



Utah has a very good defense - not the best defense that never existed. They have a very good RB and decent receivers. And not much else.



We have significant issues on offens.



We have a decent shot at a road win.

The way I see the game going after this weeks games.



Bronco focuses on stopping the :utard: run game which results in limited yards for John White. Because the :utard:s will try to run all game, even if it's not working, White will probably cross the century mark but I doubt it's by much. The :utard: O-line is weak on the tackles so delayed blitz plays by KVN or Spencer Hadley on play action passes could result in several sacks. I say let one of the OLBs spy the run/QB every play and if the play is a pass then run like we did several times against Washington State. Leave the DBs to cover the :utard: wide receivers who haven't impressed me at all for the past 3 years now, with the LBs only worrying about short passes and the occasional help in multiple WR sets. We hold the :utard:s to 3-10 points offense and hope their defense doesn't get a score.



On offense I really hope Doman has something special that he's been preparing all year but holding back for this game. The :utard: DBs are decent but not likely any better than Washington State's, so if Riley has time to throw he should have a good game. (Last year Heaps managed to throw for 305 yards against the Utes which was his season high) Our run game is going to be painful to watch. Runs up the middle are going to go for no gain or a loss on most plays; runs to the outside won't be much better. Screen passes might get us some decent yards but only if our receivers can get open down field enough that the :utard: can't play tight to the line on every play. In other words the game comes down to how well the offensive line can keep Riley standing so he can throw the ball down field and try to open up the offense a bit.



I'd like to think our offensive line comes alive for the game and we dominate both sides of the ball, but I just don't see it happening. After game 1 I was hoping that the Washington State defense had improved enough that their push against our O-line was not a bad thing, that was proved very wrong this week by Eastern Washington. I'm gonna hold out a hope that our special teams has a special game, and we get a few lucky breaks for the first time in three years and pull off a win, but I doubt either team ends up scoring more than 20.

Apriori Assumptions:

1. The Oline will be mediocre to poor--they is who they is;

2. Utah will spy Riley;

3. Utah will limit our run game;

4. Utah will press cover our WR's;



Therefore, BYU can only KEY in on a few things--



1. WRs must create space and get open!!!

2. TE will be critical, must get open often and catch (and not hold would be nice as well)

3. BDoman must be creative and adaptive (adjustment) no play calling.

4. Riley can't just chuck a duck on wing and a prayer. Take a sack and live to play another series.

5. D must and will contain the run.

Before the season started I thought Utah would beat BYU based on the fact that I believed Utah has better athletes and coaches. That may still be true but from what I’ve seen these first two weeks I am not at all optimistic about Utah’s chances.



Their OL is not very good. On top of their inexperience at LB and Blechen’s suspension Eric Rowe is out with a hamstring. The defense may not be as formidable as year’s past.



Granted, I haven’t watched very much of BYU (2nd and 3rd quarters against Washington State) but if I were you guys I’d feel pretty good about your chances Saturday.

I would have agreed with this key until last year. BYU dominated emotionally and physically and at the same time made more mistakes than I can remember in 2011.

Go uptempo.

Play to the edges, and away from Utah's interior DL.

Limit turnovers.

From what I am seeing so far, a lot of this ame is about making adjustments. Bronco recognizes the need to still clean up some aspects of the team's play (OL and penalties). Neither he nor Doman have displayed our full arsenal although they recognize that T. Hill is capable of scoring in the blue zone by running or passing (multiple threat).



USU exposed some weaknesses on the U team offense and defense, and K.W. will need to make some corrections as well.



Key to victory will be who is able to make the necessary adjustments identified in the last two games and most importantly, keep the mental edge against the opponent. Kruger got tossed when he lost his cool, our DBs gave up lots of stupid penalties vs WSU but that was cleaned up by Weber State game. Hopefully Friel now knows the difference between tackling and blocking outside LB/Safety so that we don't have drives stalled out when we are pushing down the field.

I would have agreed with this key until last year. BYU dominated emotionally and physically and at the same time made more mistakes than I can remember in 2011.

Then perhaps I should add "and heart", since the team was surely missing that last year.

I'm concerned about stopping the run when they are running the read option out of the shotgun. Weber State seemed to get some success running out of the shotgun against us. Juan Blanco Quatro would have a field day running on us if we don't shore that up this week.

so basically byu has to do everything perfectly :)

As USU showed, just be better than UT regardless of score.

The key to this game is Riley Nelson. He is good enough to score on Utah. If he can do that without turnovers, we win. Neither team can afford turnovers or giving the other team easy points.



I feel good about this game. I anticipate it will be razor close again but that riley and his senior leadership and an offense that is better than Utah's will win us this game. The defenses will both be good. Our offense is better than their offense. Riley can win this game for us even without stellar run blocking and running backs.



It should be close enough however that whoever makes stupid mistakes or turnovers may lose the game. It seems that this is usually BYU. Hopefully not this year. This really is Riley's chance to prove himself.
