How badly does Riley have to play before Lark/Hill take over

I think we all saw Lark and Hill with very strong arms and great plays against a 4th quarter tired Weber St. Defense.

But they looked good. Very good.

Did we just see nelson's leash get shortened by the high performance of the 2 and 3rd qb in this game?

A LOT worse than this:

18/29 244yds 8.4 yds/play 1TD 1 INT (In one half)

A two touchdown deficit to Utah and mid way thru the fourth quarter before coaches remember that they are the coach and not Riley. C'mon coaches, be a parent. Make the tough decision.

Riley has challenges in settling down in first quarter but he can improve and be very productive. It is not like he is playing like Heaps who started off weak and never did improve to strike fear in hearts of Defense.

I don't recall ever seeing Riley acting like he's the coach. Whether you like him or not (and I don't know why you wouldn't), Riley gives this team the best chance to win right now. Get over your disdain for him.

Riley has played well so far. He needs to settle down more quickly, as he's been having some timing issues at the beginning of the games. I think he'll be nails next week, and we beat Utah because of him, not in spite of him.

No. Your starting QB is your starting QB. Unless you're going to change your QB for the season, you let Riley play.

Not soon enough. Lark looked pretty impressive today

After a slow start - Lark looked decent

After a slow start - in limited package - Hill looked very good - dare I say potential

Munns - we may never know

Our backup quarterbacks looked better than U QBs.

Who do you think should start Saturday. Be clear.

In stead of ragging on Riley - especially given posts you have made about his character last season -

Did you notice

Riley does not pout about Hill coming in for scoring opportunities after Riley gets us in position to score

Riley does not pout when Lark and Hill get the entire 2nd half

Riley has not tried to undermine his back-ups to keep them out of the picture

Even though I am sure Riley would like to be playing every play.

This offense does make me nervous. We do not have great run blocking or a dominant runner.

I thought Lark looked pretty good. Accurate, efficient. Gutsy TD run. But 45 yards off of 7 completions against an FCS team doesn't warrant rethinking the depth chart.

I've been impressed with Hill, but his arm hasn't been a big part of that.

As far as I'm concerned, this season would have to go to a pretty dark place before you think about replacing Riley.

I don't have disdain for Riley. I love his heart and commitment. But he keeps writing checks his body can't cash.

He's already injured this season. Who knows how bad. But the writing is on the wall and it's only a matter of time before he is watching from the sideline as a casualty. He's like a thick headed dog who refuses to learn--of which he admitted last year. The guy thinks he's Tim freakin Tebow. And bc byu had some weak wussy qb, it's like he's out to prove, that he's not a wuss.

So tell me whether he is seriously incapable of learning or he's an egotist bound and determined to play his game come hell or high water or injury.

No wonder the coaches are prepping Hill intermittently. Yes he's a great Athlete and needs to be on the field, but the coaches had to have realized that Riley really isnt going to change.

I'd prefer he has a fabulous season and finds himself among BYUs best qbs. I just don't see him learning his lessons. Yes he had a fabulous first half...... Vs an FCS school. Big kudos.

Now that Wynn is down and out next week, we won't suffer from knocking out the starter only to have a backup best us. No, we might find ourselves on the other side for once. My regrettable prediction is Riley goes down next week and lark or Hill has to come in and try to win The game. I wish it wasn't so.

I don't understand this post.

Riley got off to a slow start before getting to a 160 per, before the poor pick which dropped him to a 13X per. I think the original poster is simply trying to stir controversy.

On the pick his arm was hit by the pass rusher, it wasn't one of his hail marry heavs. It was just bad luck and good timing by the defense. The reciever was open!

maybe we should ask him.

seriously though, after watching Hill and Lark's arm, even on the incomplete passes, you didn't think even once, wow, I've forgotten what a strong arm can do?

I didn't think I was raggin on Riley, the guy wins us games and he's our starter. And I think it's fairly common knowledge he doesn't have the strongest of arms. After watching his backups and being reminded of stronger arms, I think it's a legitimate question that if Riley has an off game if coaches don't remember how capable our backups can be.

As most of you know, I'm not a big Riley fan, and I think we'd end up with the same record whether he plays or Lark plays, but he is the leader of the team. They love him. The coaches love him. He will be the starter until/unless he gets injured.

The OL is the problem on this team. Riley will get killed by Utah's DL. And don't give me the crap about Utah's DL couldn't beat USU's OL. There are two problems with that theory: 1) USU's OL is far superior to BYU's and 2) Utah's OL dominated the line of scrimmage for about 40 mins of the game on Friday. Riley's INT was the result of poor OL play.

When Lark was getting off to a slow start and underthrowing his receivers? Yes, it made me forget what a strong arm can do.

And not to bag on Taysom Hill, but didn't he complete less than half his passes? Haven't we had to call time out at least twice when he comes in due to confusion.

Perhaps we should celebrate that our back-ups are actually getting meaningful reps and might actually be able to contribute if needed.

It seems that the same posters who threw Nelson under the bus for the ARM and POTENTIAL of Jake Heaps are ready to do it again the first time a back-up QB completes a couple of plays vs an FCS team.

Our coaches do not seem to have any hesitation to use Hill when appropriate and that Lark is prepared to play if needed. And all three of them get along with and respect each other. Our QB situation has not been better since 2009.
