Room for Improvement

1. failure to score touchdowns in the red zone. BYU settled for four field goal attempts by Riley Stephenson — filling in for the injured Justin Sorensen — after driving to the WSU 11-, 3-, 4- and 5-yard lines. Stephenson made three of the four tries. Need more creativity on plays - this applies primarily to second half - no points in 4th quarter. If we score TDs instead of FGs we hang 50 points.

2. Penalties - 10 for 112 yards. Need to eliminate against top opponents.

3. Riley floaters on some passes - will get picked off in the future. Should work on throwing mechanics - decision making.

Conditioning? The tempo did look faster than last year. Did our offense wear out a little bit?

I saw WSU players really sucking air in that 4th quarter. I would hope, and It appeared to me, that we were actually very well conditioned.

It's amazing we had that may yards in penalties and they still only scored 6 points. That's quite the achievement. The Puke12 officials lived up to their reputation.

Riley throwing back across the middle late and off his back foot needs to be eliminated. There should have been a couple of interceptions on these throws. The second TD to Friel also could have been intercepted.

Eliminate the personal foul penalties.

The oline HAS to start blocking better on running plays. Alisa was meeting defenders 5 yards in the backfield as soon as he took the hand off. Run blocking was terrible in the second half.

Yeah, there were some throws back into the middle that were high-risk, low reward. Shouldn't make those. The Friel TD, though, is what I think you want your senior QB to do. He put that ball where it had to be. The WSU defender was playing the ball, and gave every ounce of athleticism he had to try and get it, and still couldn't. High risk, high reward play, and he was accurate enough to make it happen.

Last year in the hurry up offense. Our offense was huffing and puffing way before the defense was. So this was a huge upgrade AND I loved every minute of the hurry up too!

To me the run blocking is the biggest thing. We need to be able to run up the middle sometimes.



BTW Utah has a better D-line than WSU. We need to improve our run blocking a lot to run between the tackles on Utah.



It does look like we aren't going to get pressure without bringing 5 guys.

The Oline! This stands as the greatest vulnerability to this year. If we can't keep the run game going, Riley tries to do too much = much greater risk of Riley getting hurt.

WSU was blowing up our line often! I hope they are better than advertised bc otherwise, Utah D will blow us up even more. And we will have to resort to trick plays, which we will probably have, but won't work all game.

I will concur. The OL looked average again. Our best run plays were outside and mainly thanks to Nelson's running threat. Those help but it would be nice to be able to pound some more through the tackles. Alisa is the man and Foote still has a freaking high YPC average.

A) We won handily

B) We beat the spread

C) We learned where we need to improve

Come on, Mars, we still need to save something for our..."friends"... up on the hill!



The way I look at it...with a limited pass rush, no power run game, and no RB receiving game, we still dominated a sort of decent team in the first game of the year.



Compare and contrast LAST years opening game.

We often did get pressure and flush their QB from the pocket, many times by only bringing three guys and dropping eight (a strategy that worked well against their offense). And, while doing that, we were still VERY effective in stopping the run.



The O-line needs to fire off the ball. On offense you know the snap count, there's no reason not to get a push up front. Power run game is definitely a concern.



We didn't fully open the playbook and played the whole second half keeping our cards close to the vest and just managing the sure win. Plus, when you've got tight ends and wide receivers having banner games, you don't have much need to throw to the RB's.

True. But WSU basically didn't run at all. And we would flush their QB, but it took 8 seconds. You think Utah is going to wait that long?

If all their receivers are covered, what other choice do they have? Is the athletically gifted Wynn going to run all over us? :lol:
