Blue Zone offense

In the 3rd quarter the blue zone offense has looked BAD. Any thoughts on what can be done to get it going? My thought is go with the hurry up. They looked good when they are running it keep running it in the blue zone.

Just need to keep it simple. Run it inside with a fullback lead. Play action to the wide side with guys dragging across the endzone at multiple levels, with a run / pass option. Fade stop to Hoffman would be money, but no Hoffman...

okay seriously the blue zone offense looks bad! Now they missed a field goal. Doman the game has gone good but if you are going to beat the good teams then the blue zone defense is going to need to be overhauled. It right now is the only bad part of this game.

Nelson makes me nervous when there in the blue zone. Between his wild out of control throws and his tuck and run mentality I worry. He seems so cool and collected before they get into the blue zone. But once there inside the 20 he seems to out of control at times. Again just my opinion. Believe me its hard to say anything when your team is up 30-6 with 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.

Against a better team, settling for 3 points in the blue zone will really hurt us.

Riley just mentioned that they weren't running their full play book tonight, I wonder if that includes holding off on some of their red zone offense it's not like we needed the Touchdowns, I can see them running some plays to set up for the Utah game.

We can't forget our best receiver was on the sideline the whole 2nd half. I'm sure that had an impact.

BYU only scored 6 points in the second half because that is all it needed. The defense was dominating, WSU could do nothing against it. Why open up the playbook so utah has more film to study just to make the win more pleasing to the fans who only appreciate a blowout as long as BYU keeps putting up touchdowns instead of FG's.

Yeah. Having Hoff out there makes it so much easier to get in. You can throw him a fade, a fade-stop, or have him out there as a distraction so you can throw a swing pass to Apo or Friel and have them bully their way into the endzone.

If I had a gripe about the red zone offense it was that BYU's oline wasn't blocking well enough on run plays to make running it in a threat which makes it so the secondary doesn't have to respect the run and can zone up our recievers. BYU's run offense must improve before we meet utah or BYU will not be able to win that game.

Seconded. I expect Utah's run D to be even better, so the OL needs to get ready to bring it.

The blue-zone offense was pretty bad in the 2nd half, but it looked to me like they were really limiting the play book to some cutsey style running plays. I guess when you're up by more than 3 touchdowns you might as well use the opportunity to practice some stuff in live action.

Agreed. I wonder if BYU now calls the pro set formation anything other than the standard "red right."

I expect to see more deception in the red zone with running plays in the future, I don't think BYU wanted to give anything away to utah if it didn't have too. I just want to see better blocking in the future, WSU was in the backfield more often than not by the time BYU was handing the ball off. That is unacceptable even if you are calling a vanilla running play.

3 or 9 passing for 45 yards and 2 TDs. 148.67 PER.

12 rushes for 7 yards.

Fine, that may be due to play calling or what not, but when push came to shove our O-Line wasn't get it done.

Maybe the O-Line should have pushed and shoved more in the Blue zone.
