So I was talking with a former BYU RB yesterday about this upcoming season. Like most he thinks the defense will be great. What was interesting though is that he said our best defensive player this year won't be Kyle Van Noy, but Daniel Sorenson. He was very adamant about it too. This gets me excited!

Maybe if KVN gets hurt (heaven forbid). That's one heck of a prediction. Will believe it when I see it.

I think he could be right, based upon the scheme.

In the 3-4 style we play, Sorensen is playing the role similar to Troy Palamalu of the Steelers. Basically, he plays closer to the LOS at times, and can be very destructive that way defensively. WE play zone cover over the top with Sampson roaming, and zones with the LBs as well on pass plays. Add a 3rd safety in Bills on passing plays (remove Tree), and that adds speed, cover and ball skills, and it does free up Sorensen to be a playmaker for us.

If this happens, that means that our D is going to be really good.

He said he didn't want to take anything away from Van Noy because he's great, but he thinks Sorenson will be that good.

I could see teams game planning for KVN opening space and playmaking opportunities for Sorenson.

Needless to say, we're in good shape if Van Noy isn't just a single star on our D but we have other guys who can rival him.

Sorenson did have perhaps our most athletic play last year - the twisting/diving interception against UT.

This is really nt an either/or discussion. You can't rely on merely one playmaker--and I'm not just resorting to the platitude of "team play".

This is an apples and oranges kind of deal. To suggest that the real player to watch is Sorenson vs KVN is almost foolhardy.

As was said, if teams cheat away from KVN, maybe others will fill in. But if they start realizing and play away from the Daniel Sorenson effect, then KVN is more in play. It's why BCS defense are great-- multiple playmakers!

Bt all of it is very exciting. Sampson is no Delilah either!!! Again, why if this D backfield can at least be even with big tme programs instead of pathetic, it will be a very good season.

I could see that happening. Haven't heard much about KVN. Hopefully he doesn't have a Pendelton type season. Sorenson was good last year, but was adjusting to a huge role. If he's grown into his new role, he'll be amazing this year.

KVN is no scrub though. Can't wait to see what this defense can do.
