Compare WSU Defense to BYU Offense

Wow, so BYU has basically owned Wazzu's defensive coordinator under Bronco.



I don't think BYU is going to have any problems moving the ball and putting up points.

I saw that too, my only hope is that Bronco has changed from the 3-3-5 to a 3-4 and the scheme is different he used to attack constantly, and now he will sit back in the zone and force the qb to beat them.

Not entirely true. See my article. Leach was somewhat poor against Bronco in his first game.

Good article, though. This matchup is why I expect a lower-scoring game: WSU won't be able to get us off the field, because we'll be averaging 5+ yards a carry, picking up first downs, running the clock, and shortening the game.

Not sure where you get that WSU has a bunch of guys playing out of position? Long is playing Buck which is a hybrid DE/LB, so he basically added some stuff, but the rest of the LB's are or have been LB's since they have been at WSU, inexperience is a clear problem though. WSU DB's go against big receivers a bunch, so not sure but that may be a push. BYU OL vs WSU DL is a BYU advantage IMO, but perhaps not as much as one would think. There is some depth and ability to rotate here and the NT Guata is not mentioned in your preview and has been running with the 1's since Coppers injury (Guata is a JC transfer). In all the BYU O will have an advantage, but then again so will the WSU O. It will be interesting to see who ends up playing over their heads on one side of the ball, that will determine the winner IMO.

Thanks for your perspective. As an outsider, I freely admit that there is a lot of nuance to the WSU defense that I don't have a great finger on, especially when so very little has been written about it in the media. But I can say I scoured the Washington papers and blogs to get the info that I could. I'm glad you could come share some of your insights.

No problem, I like to see what the opposition looks like as well. Pretty good for limited resources. The LB's are young, but pretty athletic and most are guys we have been high on for a while. Monroe started last year but tore his Achilles and was out for the year last year, but is a very well rounded guy only lacking some reps, very athletic. Sua was pretty raw but saw playing time last year as well. Oertel is a guy who has been here a while, but has switched between LB and RB depending on need. Sagote is a JC transfer (will back up SUA), Long is a senior and has been the best player on D since he was a freshman, with a couple HM all Pac-12 (which is great considering how poor those defenses have been overall). Mayes is another BUCK LB who backs up Long, very athletic, 4 sacks in spring game played as pass rushing specialist last year as a true freshman. Pettway, Allison, Polacio are all freshman who will most likely see the field at various LB spots, possibly Feddie Davie as well, though he is sort of a hybrid S/LB like Casey Locker (you will see both in multiple formations/nickle/3-3-5, etc) DL is the biggest ?. I like Guata, but he is a JC, Coerper was coming into his own at end last year, Hoffart played a little too, but not much. I think all WSU fans are curious as to how the DL will look and work in multiple formations. The DBs are pretty solid with Horton (CB) and Buchannon (SS) being special. Washington and Simmons are both solid. Influx of young guys here as well with a TF earning the start at FS Tiulalu (sp?) and carpenter/Locker/Davie looking to be solid backups. lots of unknowns, but lots of guys who have played some as well...

I am really not concerned about WSU's defense stopping our offense. I have byu scoring 27 but i think it could easily be more than that. The real question for me is how byu's defense will be this year. On paper our starting 11 seem great but we are thin at dline and cornerback. I will be most interested to see byu's defense looks against what will likely be a good WSU offense.

Ironnically Bronco's defense at New Mex could not have stopped Leach's Offense when he was a Texas Tech without the players riding on motorcyles, 115 points in 3 games. Also Bronco has better players now on his defense, will equate to him better stopping WSU?



Who knows.



WSU has 10 legit recievers and will rotate them every play and 2 QB's that have proven themselves in the PAC 12 to be able to light up passing yards under a staff that flat out stunk on gameday. Leach unlike when he went to TT inherited players who for 4 years had been recruited to run the spread offense, as the Spokane Beat writer put it the other day, "they fit his offense like a glove" Leach turned down tons offers from QBs and WRs that wanted to transfer here when he got the job, even said so last night on his coachs show as he loves what is there. WSU finished 9th in passing in the NCAA per game in 2011 and did it with 3 QBs and the best one tossed 25 passes due to inury the entire season.



Personally I think both teams are going to light up the scoreboard 1980's Hollday Bowl style tomorrow.

The idea that Leach owns Bronco is getting way too much play. Yes, Bronco's D did give up 115 points in 3 games against WSU while he was at New Mexico. But 91 of them came in two games.



49 of them came in one game. UNM gave up 10 TD passes in those three games, but six came in the last outing. In fact, in the first two games, Texas Tech as pretty pedestrian. Their passing offense had just 550 yards passing with 4 TDs and 3 INTs. Their PER was 108.75. In the second game, they had 7 drives ending in punts or turnovers.



Bronco knows how to coach defense. He's running a different defense now - with players who have been in that system for several years now - with better players than he had the last time he met Leach. And he actually has a decent offense on his team to help out his side of the ball.



Don't be surprised if Bronco "out-coaches" Leach this time around. I'll be surprised if WSU gets to 20 points.

Unfortunately, I don't think WSU will have much problem stopping BYU's offense either.



All in all, BYU stops WSU more than they get stopped, and it is a victory for the cougars - but not the 20 point victory that everyone thinks. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it came down to a TD or two to win this game (provided that the D doesn't actually score any TD's.)
