Interesting comments from Nick Howell stating that they planned to use lots of nickle defense:

DBs: Preston Hadley and J. Johnson (backups - Skye Povey and Micah Hanneman). Where is D. Everett?

Safeties: D. Sorenson and J. Sampson (backups M. Hague and C. Bills)

These guys can all fly to the ball and tackle well. Can put lots of pressure on WRs.

I imagine that we will use speed on the DE edges with Ziggy Ansah and Bronson Kafusi getting more playing time for rushing the passer and bringing the heat. Because they are both 6-6, they should be able to knock down or alter throws if they get into the passing lanes.

I also envision Alani Fua seeing lots of time opposite KVN as he has lots of speed and can put pressure on QB and cover the RBs and TEs very well.

Here's what would concern me going against Bronco Ds: 90 games, BYU Defensive PER is 119.40.

24 Games with a PER above 135 with a 14-10 record in those games.

29 games with a PER under 100 with a 5-24 record in those games.

It's tough to throw efficiently on a Bronco defense. It's tough to beat BYU if you're a passing team. More stats:

13 games with 3 or more TD passes with a 6-7 record.

27 games with 0 TD passes with a 3-24 record.

13 games with 300 yards passing with a 6-7 record.

24 games with fewer than 150 yards passing with a 5-19 record.

I expect BYU to be in the 3-3-5 a lot vs. WAzzu, and maybe even some 2-4-5. The 2 if we call ziggy an LB instead of a DE.

Bronco will be flexible this year that way as he has the players with speed to do it for a change.

By the waym the extra player in the 5 playing nickel will be Bills. However, in tat formation, BYU could roll Sampson over to the nickel and play Bills in the more tradition role, as Sampson was dominant in that role last year.

Again, Bronco has options.

Howell envisions Bills sliding into SS next to Sorenson while Sampson plays nickel. All three of those guys can lay the wood like Andrew Rich used to lower the boom. Sampson especially excelled as the nickel back last year and Bills is an upgrade from Uale.

Some new developments reported by Wrubell:

"Mendenhall says true freshman Jherremya Leuta-Douyere is "now the backup" to Kyle Van Noy at weakside linebacker. Ziggy Ansah is also on the weakside, but while Ian Dulan (back) is out, Ansah is working mostly on the defensive line. Once Dulan returns, Mendenhall says "we have some more flexibility" at the Will position, with Alani Fua also able to move over from the strong side." Sounds like he will be fielding players with very strong pass rushing skills.

Word on the field is that Bronco will be running a lot of 2-4-5 which emphasizes more speed and coverage against the multiple WRs/RBs that Leach will employ. I can see Manumaleuna and Dulan playing the DEs with Ziggy and Kafusi rotating in as subs.

I think this is correct.

I think the goal for the Wazzu game wil be similar to what USU did to BYU in 2010 up in Logan. BAsically, let the QB throw for many yards, but limit pts and put them in 3rd and long situations, and shut down the run game, or get ahead and mak Wazzu abandon the run.

I could see them throwing for 350, but running or less than 50 and scoring around 20 pts on us, and still getting beat by 14+.

In fact, this is what I expect to happen.

Abandon the run? WSU ain't gonna run the ball. The final scrimmage a week ago they only went 36 plays and ran it 5 times. WSU is a legit 12 deep at WR but, Leach will only play 8 and sub in fresh legs every play. I went to the scrimmage last Wed and WSU's kids are in such good shape that it blew my mind, there is not a fat guy out there. The kds said they ran like they had never done in their lives since his arrival and I believe them. Leach's goal is to have WR and RB coming in and out so fast that you secondary cannot sub and win the conditioning battle in 4th quarter.

If the offense subs it has to allow the defense time to make substitutions as well.

If Team A is in a no-huddle formation and substitutes, or if they have already

broken the huddle and a substitute then enters the field, either of these situations will

trigger the administration of Rule 3-5-2-e. Team B is afforded a match up opportunity if

they do so immediately (3 seconds). If Team A does not substitute and is in a hurry-up

mode, Team B must be prepared to react promptly and is not afforded any match-up

provisions. These are the mechanics we will use for this rule.

If we are delayed in getting to the ball to prevent a snap, we will stop the game

and give Team A a warning that it must allow Team B to match up (“Do-Over”).

Further attempts by Team A to create a defensive disadvantage in this manner

will result in a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty

I hope a healthy dose of KVN makes the QB get nervous every time he's in the pocket longer than 2 seconds.

They will need 8 WRs playing at 4,000 ft above sea level and running all over the place. It's not like we are herding cats - if QB doesn't have protection, it's kind of hard to complete a pass lying on your back with your helmet twisted sideways and grass in your mouth. As Jordan Wynn of UT - he likes our turf.

The best defense against a pass happy team is a good run game.

Seriously.

Passing offenses in general, and Leach's system specifically, rely on rhythm. Rhythm will be hard to come by in the first game with a new system on the road with 65K people screaming at you. But it will come if you get enough plays under your belt. And that's what Wazzou's gonna do - throw it 60+times.

Except, what if they don't get to throw it many times? What if they don't even get to 50 plays? I submit to you SDSU @ BYU, 2010:

http://cougarstats.com/2010/2010Game6.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

BYU held the ball for 45 minutes, or 75% of the game. 62 rushes, 12/19 on 3rd down (63%). SDSU had 48 total plays, 36 of which were passes. Despite being fairly efficient (PER 141.2), they only scored 21 points and lost the game. They had 11 possessions, averaging 4.4 plays per possession. In the 4th quarter, when they were trying to come back, they still only managed 3 possessions and 12 total plays. When that's all you get, and you have to wait an average of 4 minutes to get the ball back again, it's hard to establish rhythm. And that's how you beat a pass-happy offense. With our backs, our QB, and our defense, I like our chances in this kind of game plan. Disrupt rhythm early, and run clock. It's a bad matchup for Leach and the red Cougars. I think we cover the spread on this one, and see something similar to SDSU '10 or BC '05 (with us playing the BC role, of course).
