Austin Collie-- should he retire?

Austin Collie's 4 contract is ending this year with his total 4 yr earnings around 2.5 million (including signing bonus), and he's not really even close to market value given his production when he's on the field. What a shame. Should he retire?



Anyone know approx how much he'll make in retirement? The NFL retirement summary doesn't talk about it, but I'm guessing it's based on yrs in the league, etc.

I vote yes, I hate to think about the long term damage that might come if he keeps trying and suffers more concussions.

Srsly, take the money, keep the brain where it is, go back to school, prepare for a new career and move on. No one, especially now, can reasonably have any complaint if he hangs it up right now.

If so, then he probably should hang up the cleats. If not, I say give is another go. His production went down because he had a horrible QB throwing to him. In the right place, I think he's got a few more good years in him. However, he should call it quits with the next concussion.

Heck no, he shouldn't retire. As long as he can get the OK from the docs, and the team wants him, he should play.

The doctors know a lot more than I do. If they say that he won't be putting himself at risk of permanent damage if he continues to play, then I think he should use one of those big, concussion-proofing space helmets and keep playing.

Problem is he'll now be known as the concussion guy. Like it or not, DBs will target his head.

Having suffered about 4-5 "known" concussions, and being just a little bit younger than Austin, I wouldnt continue taking the chances I'm 24 turning 25 at the end of this year, and I'm fully beginning to feel the effects of those head injuries I suffered at a younger age. But then again everyone is different. but for a guy that seems super susceptible to that type of injury I would probably leave...

And now you will need to show me that that depression didn't start because of injuries sustained early in his career.



I'd tell Collie to hang em up. No doctor knows exactly how your injuries are going to impact you in the future.

If anything, the burden of proof is on you to show that his injuries did cause his depression.

Considering Seau was probably playing football for close to 30 years and certainly he was a developing adolescent, it would likely be difficult to prove one way or the other.



Although, I'd be more likely to believe his football playing (and the multiple reported and unreported concussions) contributed to his depression.

How about an "I don't pretend to know what's best for someone else because (a) I don't know them personally, and (b) I'm not a doctor" option?

He should. But he won't.

I hate to vote "yes" on this because I love watching him play. But he shouldn't mess around with the head injuries. If the team doctors say everything is fine, he should get a second and third opinion before deciding.

And those who smoke should probably wait until they actually get cancer before quitting.

And when the fourth doctor says he's ok to continue, he should as the doctor why he disagrees with the others and doesn't think multiple concussions are that big of a deal.
