Depth added to TE Position

Reported that Terren Houk (6-4/205) moved from arguably the most deep position (WR) to TE to shore up pass catching abilities, add athleticism and agility. Sounds like a flex TE in the mold of Marcus Matthews - just needs to add weight/muscle mass. Like the move - Riley gets another big target to consider as a pass option.

I like this move for Houk and the team. If he is nails at catching passes and only a so so blocker that can work. Pitta was never spectacular at blocking, but he knew where to be and how to at least put up a screen block (more like a bball players block :) ) but he was obviously fabulous at catching and running. We can't seem to get that with any of our TEs.

Tis must be again, part of getting the most athletic guys on the field. I know he is not starting yet, but I believe he will work his way into the top spot or second.

I thought I read Wrubell a few days ago saying that Houk fell off the radar after several costly drops. That may have precipitated the change, but it looks like he doesn't have the sure hands of Pitta--who I remember being more fabulous at catching and falling than catching and running. My hunch is that his YAC numbers per reception would be way lower than Harline, Coats, or George. But I love Dennis.



Not sure this really helps the TEs. I'm scratching my head about what's going on there. We recruited a ton of talent. Yesthe rash of injuries has just been crazy, but even those that are healthy are way less than mediocre. Is it coaching? Has Lance Reynolds been slipping?

No. He moves too slow to slip. He's sure seems like in retirement mode though, whenever I see him. But he is a great guy. Great man. Great father and contributed so much to BYU, in addition to his legacy of Olinemen sons.

If you have seen Houk, the kid has the frame needed to bulk up. I bet he could easily get to 250 and become a Dan Coats type. Good size, fast enough for a TE, and if they flex him out, would be a good match up for us vs an LB or safety.



I like this move. Bosed well for 2014 and 2015.

I think Houk disappointed in fall camp. He seemed to have he inside edge to be receiver number 4 but ended up being beat out by just about everybody. drops seem to be a problem with him.

Terenn Houk, is said to look and run a lot like starting receiver Ross Apo. In the first fall scrimmage, he caught two passes for 66 yards, including a 37-yard TD strike from Taysom Hill. Don't believe he caught a pass in the second scrimmage, but not sure if he was thrown any balls. He is talented and has lots of potential. The TE position will allow him to shine more when going against LBs as he can create mismatches with his speed and height.

Today Wrubell is reporting that Marcus Mathews is moving from tight end to wide receiver. The duration of Mathews' shift is to be determined. Apparently, the move was made to replace Marcus' brother Mitch, who was likely the fourth receiver after the "big three" of Hoffman, Apo and Falslev. The move will be for an undertermined amout of time as Mitch's status is unknown after his recent aggravation of a clavicle injury.

How does moving our most productive TE to WR make any sense? It seems like we have six other guys who could have been the 4th WR. Didn't Matthews put on a ton of weight?

Marcus is at 235 but apparently has not lost any speed. Could be that he lines up at Flex TE (hybrid WR) instead of a down TE. Maybe this bolsters the good hands, big WR corps that wins out agains most DBs.
