Bronco's take on the team

There is quality depth at most positions like LB, Safety, RB, DL. The players are some of the best compared to any other year in the Bronco era.

Brandon Ogletree believes that the 2012 defense has the fastest group of players on which he has ever played.

Special teams will primarily feature scholarship players and very few walk-ons will see the field on special team assignments. Apparently the ST positions are filled with one-to two-deep scholarship players - the best players who want to participate on special teams.

The entire OLine has made dramatic improvement in their fitness, their clean execution (no holding penalties in Thursday scrimmage). They are functioning as a cohesive unit despite being a patchwork of players during most of Fall and Spring camp.

The primary area of concern is the kicker as Justin Sorensen's back is still and issue. Bronco stated, “the longer it takes, the more risk… we’re preparing other options, just in case.”

Seems like the lack of any major injuries during Fall camp indicates the revised training methods are working, and that the players worked well during the summer season and have adapted to the increased rigors of what Bronco is putting on them. Ice baths are working well to ease sore muscles.

Is it the hype machine to tell thinks like they are? Is it the hype machine to explain to the media that it has taken bronco until now to restock the talent pool with actual scholorshipped talent after losing a bunch of scholorship players in the 04 scandal and the post 04 coaching change?

IMHO - yes. The OP even shined up the old hype apple that TH put out there. A lot of changes were made. And now we get our annual "better than ever" comments from BM and TH. They are sincere. Nevertheless, the field of play will measure this team. Last year's team got some time off - because they were "so far ahead". You saw where that went.

Jake Heaps and others proved last year that some players play worse than they practice and some play better - especially when a Coach practices in a "fear of contact" mode. Is that contagious? Will they play scared? IDK. The field of play will tell.

I am not judging Bronco's "practice with not getting hurt" goal so high on the priority list. He knows who BYU is and is not. BYU never has the depth of the elite programs. Never. Simply Never. :) :) So he tries to keep them all healthy - sacrificing some ability to let actual contact in practice help determine who should really be playing.

Then we start slow, make some adjustments, and finish strong.

We can officially turn the hype machine if we are better than 2&2 in the first 4 games.

It's tough when you have coaches who see the potential in their team and believe in their team every year. Man, life is hard as Cougar fans :~(

My issue was not with what the coaches said. If you read those quotes in context, there was more balance and less Polyanna than in this OP.

Just my opinion. Hype from the coaches. Amplified hype in the OP.

BYU might even live up to the hype. I anxiously wait to look and see.

Because Chris Petersen doesn't?

Nothing wrong expressing optimism and your confidence in your players. Privately. I don't think Mendenhall is different than most coaches. Don't they all believe in and have confidence in their players? It's just that most coaches don't proclaim this fact to the media before the season. Bronco seems to like to.

It is getting to me. Blinded by the anticipation. Even with my dogged realistic assessments that some see as pessimism - I fully expect this to be a fun season for me to watch.

Most coaches actually do express optimism in their players and teams before the season starts. You just don't realize it because you don't scour the internet for what other team's coaches are saying.

This is strange indeed Bib. Perhaps if you combine a Bib and a Bib2 you get a cougar optimist?

Problem with Bronco is he speaks too definitively with the press. Works great as long as you deliver; not so much after a while.

Also, Bronco's expectations may or may not be aligned with fans' expectations. We don't really know. So, we're left taking his definitive statements of excellence and applying them to our own, untempered expectations.

Bottom line, when it comes to setting expectations among the fan base, Bronco should read a book or two on it or hire a consultant of two as he's prone to doing.

Jamaal W.'s minor ankle sprain aside, I think not having a single player injured during camp is a HUGE win for us.

Seems like every year we've been short a few key players because of injury which changes the flavor of the whole season.

As a native Oregonian and current Idahoan, I follow Oregon St reasonably close, and BSU almost as much as BYU. Both of those coaches are far more guarded in their public expression of optimism than Bronco. To the point of the OP, it's really not needed as most BYU fans get excited at the beginning with or without our coach telling us we're going to be top ten or whatever.

As a side note - outstanding signature doohickey! Coolest Riley moment ever!

I like Ben Cahoon. He's nega-Bronco. Whenever he is asked about a receiver, he replies that they need more work.

We had KVN's back-Up blow a knee in non-contact drills iirc.
