BYU's Uptempo, Nitro Offense

The O is distributing the ball quite successfully in live sets. Doman, Hall and Riley all believe that this is a good sign because our D is quite good, they know the O sets, schemes and routes. Despite this Riley is connecting well. We are 6-7 deep at WR with Mitch Matthews, Cody Raymond, Dylan Collie, Brett Thompson and Terren Houk all expected to see playing time this year. Ditto for RB - just seeing where backup RBs Foote, Williams, Hine, Pritchard, Lasike fit into the O with their unique skills. Hall stated that he expects thIngs to open up even more during regular season as teams will be less familiar with our up tempo offense compared to our D. It is a great test for the O each week to test their mettle against our athletic D. Good things ahead.

Fast is not always fast. I will believe this when I see it producing points. The challenge to this is that Bronco wants ball control, long possessions. But this up tempo has a tendency, if we have the horses and scheme, to produce points fast (think Leach). And I just don't think the two approaches are all that compatible. Maybe with 50/50 run to pass it can work, but I think a team has to be committed to this and to scoring alot of points otherwise it can seem like start-stop, hurry up-slow down kind of schizo tempo.

Brandon Doman sounds conspicuously confident in his approach sneaking up on teams. I hope this is not another case of over-promising and under-delivering.

Be assured WSU Cougars won't be caught off guard. Whether they have the horses on Their D to slow BYU down remains to be seen.
