Utes in more trouble offensively?

I'm on record that I think the Utes are going to struggle mightily on offense this year. They have a brand new OC who is coaching players he played with. They have an oft-injured QB who has been very ineffective at times.

And now there are reports that he might be in a QB battle?

If that is the case, the Utes are going to be very poor on offense, especially early in the year.

I thought I read that Wynn scored almost every play in their "red zone" work last week. He joked that he knew the Ute D as well as the D players. It sounds like they have two solid running backs (one proven), and a couple of capable recievers. As long as their O-line works, and Wynn doesn't get hurt, how tough could the play calling be. Having said that, If I were Bronco, I'd send KVN into the back field every single play until Wynn was begging to get out of the game.

Usually those reports are given to placate talented players that are impatient about waiting - this way they keep working, thinking they have a shot. Then they don't get distracted by thoughts of transferring. And then, when Wynn goes down again the week after the BYU game, the new kid in town is ready.

I would not read too much into it other than that the new guy apparently practices well. But U has been known to pull the trigger - like when Wynn took over.

Two words-Offensive Tackles. If they can figure that out and plug in serviceable OTs they'll be fine.

I think the U might struggle, but for different reasons than we think.

THey are strong up the middle on the Oline, but they have issues at both tackle spots. Whit has talked about on a few occasions. Maybe to motivate, maybe because he really is concerned. But they are tough and experienced at Center and both Guards spots.

Also, they have help John WHite out of contact all fall. Not sure how he will ever be ready to play football in 2012 with out any contact (TIC). Sick of hearing how teams can't prepare without it. Clearly that is not always the case.

I think what is happening is that the U knows that Wynn is fragile, that he will start, and chances are good that he will go down later in the year. So Whit is making comments to keep Hays and that other kid motivated in camp because they will most likely be called upon to play later this year. They will need to be ready. Hopefully come the BYU game....

Utah has phenomenal receivers and a phenomenal running back. Wynn is good enough to look good because of his receivers. if their offensive line is any good their offense will be good. I agree it will come down to their tackles.

I am more worried about our offense than theirs. Since Max and co left it has never quite been close to the same.

I'm much more confident in our offense than theirs. At the end of the season, I bet we average 10 more points than they do. At least. And I bet we do better against our opponents defenses than the Utes do (i.e. compare how we do to our opponents defensive averages.)

Don't care.... Utah can go to hell!

Most people on here were on Max Hall's case too, until he squeaked out that win over U.

So there is Riley's legacy opportunity - maybe I will make a new thread. Oops - using my rotary dial Q phone. Someone make a poll - Riley's Biggest 2012 realistic Legacy opportunity for me.

Go undefeated - possible BCS or NC

12 wins

11 wins

10 wins

Beat the team Jake Heaps could not beat - U

Beat Manti Teo - before he beats us

Beat GT - ACC Power

Beat the team with a perfect record over BYU that stole our Cinderella slipper - BSU

Beat OSU and WSU

Beat his old team - USU

Go 3-0 PAC

U think BYU might have a lot of motivation?

But do they have the horses.

BTW - the poll will only make sense if you only take the BEAT lines and ask what fans want most re his legacy.

I think the fortunes of both teams depend on the same thing-keeping the QB healthy.

If Jordan Wynn goes down you have a true freshman or a guy who had zero D1 offers.

Riley's style of play makes him more susceptible to injury and if he goes down for any extended period of time I have no idea what you guys will do.

I'd agree that RN's style of play might make him more susceptible, except that Johnson is putting the spread back in at the U. The one he ran as a freshman, where he ran it a lot. So based upon that, I think both QBs will have to be careful this year.

THing is though that RNs injuries have all been different, while Jordana's have all been shoulder related. His shoulders are fragile. That Oline has to keep him upright.

For sure.

From what I hear Travis Wilson was made for a Spread Offense. Jordan Wynn? Not so much. They say he's bigger and stronger than ever but it's hard to ignore his history.

How much confidence do you all have in Lark? (I assume he's #2)

Lark looks better than ever, which isn't saying that much, but I'd wager he'd start at some D1 schools. Doesn't instill a lot of confidence, still, but he'd be serviceable.

I agree with Schmoe. If you would have asked me what I thought of Lark in thespring, I would have been nervous. But he has looked so much better this fall. If RN goes down, I think he is good to go. He is mobile and has a good arm. He made a few sick throws at the open scrimmage. I bet he plays at least half the Weber State game.

Jordan Wynn stronger? Than what, his weak self?

BUT, Cougar fans beware! We have put down the first string qb more than once only to be beaten by the 2nd stringer.

Exactly. First stringers haven't been our issue. Its the back-ups. We seem to have a knack for helping teams figure out who their true starters should be.

Actually, if memory serves me, we put Wynn down last year, KW reminded Wynn that it was not his throwing arm that hurt, so he came back in and ripped us apart when their RB wasn't shredding us. IDK why we did not keep after him and put him away. He was toast the next week and it took Hays a few weeks to become at all effective.

I'm confident in saying that both Nelson and Lark would win starting jobs at Utah.

Jordan Wynn's PER for the BYU game was 135.59. So while it meets the minimum standard we expect for QBs I would not call it 'shredding' our defense.
