Who is BYU playing in the Poinsettia Bowl?

BYU isn't going to play in the Vegas Bowl.

I don't want to even think of Armed Forces or New Mexico Bowl. Therefore, San Diego here we come!!! Here's how the Pac-10 would like if the projected favored team won their remaining games:



Team Overall Pac-10 Remaining Wins

1. Oregon 10-2 8-1 ASU, UA, OSU

2. USC 10-2 7-2 Stan, UCLA, UA

3. Arizona 8-4 6-3 Cal, ASU

4. OSU 8-4 6-3 UW, WSU

5. Stanford 8-4 6-3 Cal, ND

6. Cal 7-5 4-5 UW

7. UCLA 6-6 3-6 WSU, ASU

8. UW 4-8 3-6 WSU

9. ASU 4-8 2-7 none

10. WSU 1-11 0-9 none



This would likely mean UCLA. Yuck. I think Cal will likely be the opponent. I think USC will lose 1 more game and therefore the Pac-10 will not have 2 teams in the BCS. UCLA won't be bowl eligible after losing to ASU. Cal seems to slide at the end of the year so I think a 6th place finish for them is possible.

I'd really like to see BYU beat Leland Stanford Junior University in the Bowl game... we owe them a butt whoopin' for that band fiasco a few years back. (I believe that was the last BYU game I attended in person - perhaps it would make nice bookends, and I should go to that game should they play them again...) :crazy:

Luck is arguably the best QB in the Pac-10 and Gerhart's a beast. I really can't see BYU beating Stanford.

I thought Oklahoma would KILL BYU. However, I didn't anticipate that Oklahoma's OL would be dreadful. It was really nice that Oklahoma's weakest link (OL) was far worse than BYU's weakest link (defensive front 7). If OU's offensive line was merely compotent then Oklahoma probably wins that game.



With Stanford they present a huge matchup problem for BYU. They will literally line up 7 offensive lineman per play and just run over you. With BYU's undersized front 7 who has difficulty rushing the passer this would be tough to stop.



Honestly, because of their balance, I think Stanford and Arizona would be the LEAST favorable out of the possible matchups from the Pac-10 even over Oregon and USC.

My preferences, in order from top to bottom:



1 - Boise State (could happen if USC gets into BCS as at large instead of BSU and no 6th place team eligible in Pac-10)

2 - Cal

3 - Stanford

4 - Oregon State

5 - UCLA (have had enough of them lately)

6 - Nevada (2nd place WAC team - blaaah)

7 - Washingon (play them next season)

A matchup with Boise State in a Bowl game would get me excited about the post-season again.

TCU is BCS bound. Utah is Las Vegas bound, whether we beat them or not. And if SDSU wins 6 games, I assume they will be Poinsettia bound.



BYU could easily end up in Boise come bowl season, playing in the Humanitarian. In which case, either we get Nevada (the #1 rushing team in the nation), or we luck out and get the Broncos after a frustrating near miss of a big money bowl.

You could be right, Mars, and I certainly have no idea what any of the bowl guys are thinking, but how many fans does SDSU usually get out to home games? I know it would be their first bowl game in a decade or so, but it still seems like they'd take us over a six win team.

SDSU is 4-5, plays Wyoming this week, and will also face Utah.

Wyoming is 4-5, plays SDSU this week, and will also face TCU.

UNLV is 4-6, and they face Air Force this week.



2 of those 3 could end up bowling, or none of them could. The Poinsettia taking an eligible hometown SDSU would be great PR for the bowl/city though, don't you think? Same thing if UNLV ended the season with a couple miracles and was eligible for the Las Vegas bowl. It's been a long, long time since either of them went bowling.

It may be great PR, but it would definitely not be as profitable as picking BYU. I promise that BYU would bring more fans and advertising dollars than San Diego State. They bring more fans and advertising dollars than any team in the conference (and a lot of BCS teams too). Who would watch a bowl game with San Diego State playing in it? I don't see that being a very good business decision, and the Poinsettia Bowl, like every other bowl, is nothing but a business.

There is one fact in college football that fans keep forgetting when dealing with bowl games. Bowl games are butts in the seat and eyes on the TV's. If the Poinsettia Bowl believed that SDSU (if eligible) gave them that more than BYU, then they would take them. The reality, proven by history, it is not a fact that SDSU, even being the home team, can bring more butts/eyes. San Diego does not own the bowl game. ESPN does and they know that BYU is a proven commercial commodity.

Mars, I couldn't see any bowl game taking SDSU over BYU, even if SDSU had a comparable record. There are so many LDS and BYU fans in SoCal, they'd love to have BYU there, especially where it's been years since BYU has been there, unlike the Las Vegas Bowl.

I don't think we want BSU to play a MWC team. WE need both to win for the BCS evaluation.

If BYU wins out maybe they have a shot at a New Years day bowl. Espically if Utah beats TCU and then BYU beats Utah. Notre Dame goes with three losses. Why not BYU?

Because BYU's not ND, and our two losses were embarrassing. Had we lost both games by a total of 5 points, you could maybe argue that we still deserve Top10 recognition, but we don't. We lost by about 60 points.

If BYU ends up in San Diego come bowl time, I think the list of schools that BYU might play would be short. If the PAC10, I say it is Cal. I also think that Navy is a big possibility since of the large fan base for Navy in the area. The Navy HC is LDS as well, so a nice tie in that way. Notre Dame is a possibility as well, especially after Pitt hammers them this weekend. Any bowl is happy to take ND. But in order, I would vote this way as most likely:



1)Navy

2) Notre Dame

3) Cal

4) Nevada

5) Idaho

I think BSU stays home and plays in the local bowl this year after not doing it last year. Helps the local bowl, helps the local economy, pays out just as much and cheaper to BSU. So unless BYU plays in the Weedeater Bowl, or Humanitarian Bowl, or whatever they call it now, I do not see a BYU-BSU match up.

I don't think Navy is a possibility as I believe they have a commitment already. Texas Bowl?
