Day 6 - Offense Struggling in 11-11 Drills

After basically skipping 11-11 yesterday.



Two running plays were the lone highlights!

As always in fall camp, even with the excellent off-season/ summer that the team claims to have had, the defense is usually ahead of the offense at this point.



The fact that running plays were the lone highlights seems pretty good to me. That atleast the O-line is giving some good effort.

We are going to start seeing the defense dominate. Did something similar last year after the offense seemingly dominated for a few days. The defense stepped it up and the O struggled for the rest of camp. I just hope to see more back and forth this fall than we had last year.

Yeah, the O dominated the first half of camp, then the D ramped it up, was able to better disguise coverages and the offense stopped moving the ball.

Like last year, perhaps we are getting a glimpse at how well the offense will play against a good defense.

Our two bad boys practiced. No pads, though, per regulations. But their clock is at least ticking. Probably cannot scrimmage Thursday.



Now, I think I know why we never saw an announcement stating that OC was dropped from the team. He was not on the team. You can't be dropped if you are not on the team. That is apparently why it just said he was not invited to practice with the team.



Hope OC is able to stay and graduate.

I'm not going to worry about 11 on 11 stats until starting next week, when every one is in full pads, and the kid gloves come off. Until then, just working out kinks and working on timing, execution. Next week starts big boy football.



We all know that RN is not a precision based QB, but a playmaker type. Hoping he gets better at the precision and identifying areas where the defense is giving the O plays, but honestly, not expecting it. Just hope he makes plays.



The thing I want to see is that our Oline is not getting pshed around in practice this year again. Been an issue the last 2 years. If BYU wants to take the next step, it can;t be an issue this year.

It is early, relatively speaking. But sounds eerily familiar to last year. feel free to throw a tomato at me, but c'mon. We have a Sr qb, lots of returning guys. What the freak were they doing all summer? Why aren't we drilling the O and better prepping them? I wonder if this is a product of the same mentality that we saw last year when coaches took a day off bc they "couldn't be more prepared".

Oh yes, the D is better than last year and probably more dominant than this years offense. But m concerned. Not panic yet, but trajectory is everything.

I wonder also if this speaks to Riley's style of Offense. Have to get out on the edge of danger for it to work. Can't actually get high execution through discipline, repetition, and working like clockwork. And can't rely on Hoffman alone. He might be the bread and Apo the butter, but if this team wants to be legit, they better be able to move it on this D at least some of the time.

Riley went 8 for 8 the other day. I'm not too concerned right now.

Oh ye of goofy emotions. Riley was like 8-of-8 passing a practice or two ago, and has put up similar numbers in other practices. Are we really freaking out about the offense right now, for some random, unknown reason?

Offense was just saving itself for the scrimmage tomorrow when the "lights are on."

I was just glad to see that Adam Hine got some carries and broke one, but it's still early fellas and I'm not putting too much emphasis on how the O looks the first week of camp when they were missing one of their key players and they haven't been going live. Once plays become live with full pads with more of the actual football element to it, we will see the offense play much better IMO.

And with today's afternoon session being closed, it's possible, the offense may have a better day than we'll know about.

Last year Jake heaps had gaudy numbers without full pads and hitting as well. Past days 8-8 and 11-11 is anomalous, pansy football. If a golf drive starts left and looks like it could possibly come back to the right, great. But until it comes to the right it is trending left. In a similar fashion to fall camp in past years. I'm just saying I will believe it when i see it, bc nothing leads me to believe that this offense is currently explosive or even in good shape under game-like situations.

DM, why would hitting a cut shot in golf help the offense play better?



I don't think this offensive will be "explosive", it will have big play capabilites like most offenses but I think we will see an offense that will put long drives together and will be oportunistic (taking advantage of turnovers, etc...) and when they don't score they will help the defense out by winning the field postion game. As much as I like seeing "BYU" football and watching the QB wing it all over the field, I would like to see a nice running game that eats clock and yards. Our defense will be good but the best defense is a good offense. I still say don't fret it is early in the year and we still have 3 weeks to get ready for WSU and a lot can happen in 3 weeks.

If only there was some way to know if Jake Heaps and Riley Nelson play exactly like each other on the field, away from practice...

Spiff can back up the stats, but Riley has been fairly accurate from the reports issued by observers with the various news outlets. He had a 50 yard TD completion to Brett Thompson. Furthermore, Heaps outshone Nelson in these type of drills but clearly coulnd't do squat in live action games, etc. Riley, on the otherhand, excels under pressure and in live conact.

To be fair, the two were always fairly close to each other in camp statistics, but Riley Nelson was always handicapped by getting far fewer reps and less practice time with the play makers. Luckily we've got RN in practicing now, his first year getting meaningful reps in camp.
