Very telling approach for seeking improvement with coaching staff and not maintaining status quo...



"Having our coaches gain increased knowledge, and become really master teachers and true, I would say, experts in their craft. So getting in more professional visits, and getting really more detailed than we have already been. Looking at all the training methodologies that we use, in making sure that not only are we up to speed at industry standard, but beyond that in being innovative in that capacity. We are also having outside people come in and attend our meetings and evaluate us as teachers, getting that feedback. So there is nothing that is not fair game right now. "



"Gaining knowledge. Again, preparing for a brand new stage of our program, more significant competition, more diversity of opponents, more differences in terms of areas of the country we are going to be playing in the next couple of years. And trying to improve our team. The purest form of competitive advantage is knowledge, so I have made a huge emphasis to our staff to gain more."



Bronco appears to realize that significant changes are needed for our program to get to the next level and compete with the top teams. Scheduling them is one thing, preparation - physically fitness, is another, but being extremely knowledgable in tendencies/traits of our opponents and how to exploit them with plays and our personnel is an entirely different level. Every game is a bowl game with new rivals and different style of play - they have to be prepared in all areas to compete effectively.

Those comments put the whole context of what Bronco meant, which Franchuk poorly tweaked, into the proper frame.

I really appreciated these two threads from TBS related to the topic at that site:



I was at the coaches clinic that Bronco spoke at and I have to agree with Andrew. Franchuk did spin Broncos comments for whatever point he is trying to make. The NFL commissioner asked college coaches to share the following stats: Only 2% of athletes that make it to the NFL will last over 3 years. 70% are either divorced, drug addiction, bankrupt, injured, etc. It seems that Bronco is the only coach who is sharing this info that the commissioner has asked for college coaches to share. Both Gary Andersen and Kyle made no mention of it, because they were both talking up their programs. We are a bunch of youth football coaches and Kyle made it sound like Utah was going to recruit every kid we are coaching. The coach sitting next to me was from Logan and is a big Aggie fan. He was really impressed by what Bronco had to say. Bronco made no comment about his program or recruiting. His focus was only on the kids, which is why we were there. Bronco's point of sharing those stats was to encourage us coaches to make sure the kids had fun and enjoy the game of football, because most of them will not play high school, college, or pro. The kids can learn life lessons from the game of football, and we as coaches can be role models and examples for the kids. Make sure the kids have fun on the field and be good young men off it, because at some point, football will surely end. Apparently Franchuk didn't include that in his article.

The following is a boardmail that was sent to me last year by the father of a prominent recruit who later committed to BYU:



"These guys on the board are talking like Bronco and his staff never mention the NFL. Believe me they do. All aspects of the future are discussed including NFL possibilities. Have you ever been on the coaches floor of the Football offices? There are former BYU NFL players pictures all over the place. BYU is very proud of the players they have put into the NFL and believe me, it's a part of the recruiting process. I have heard it with my own ears. Obviously it's not an over powering message but it's surely a part of the strategy.



Don't mention my name but feel free to post that the Dad of a high level recruit told you that Bronco and the other coaches have all mentioned the NFL to his son during the recruiting process.



[My son] is being recruited by some of the most talented recruiters and coaches in the country. I will tell you that BYU's recruiting approach and strategy stands up with the best of them. I can't say enough good about Bronco, Coach Howell, Coach Tidwell, Coach Weber, Coach Poppinga, Coach Reynolds, Coach DuPaix, Coach Cahoon, "Freight Train" Morris and Coach Doman. I have spent time with them all and they are all quality men that know their jobs very well."Matt Hodge
