No Open Practices This Fall

attending a practice during BYU education week has been a basic staple. Why would that be taken away? Doesn't make sense.

Because (i) you only get a limited amount of practice time with your team, and (ii) a lot of fans are idiots and like to take pictures of and dissect everything on the interweb, so an open practice essentially becomes a practice where you can't do anything that might in any way show your hand for the upcoming season---on in other words "a wasted practice."



If closed practices make for a better team in the Fall, I'm all for it.

Yes - but I thought it was all about execution according to Bronco. Personally, I have always been a big supporter for trying to have a little element of surprise to go along with the execution.

I like it. Everyone here whines about setting expectations correctly well, closing practices takes the media out of the expectation game. Last year everything out of the media was that Jake heaps looked as good as Sr John Beck in practice so all of you thought BYU was going to come out and score 50 pts per game. If there are no glossy reports in the media on what the offense looks like, we don't get these expectations.

Oh, don't get me wrong--we'll still have plenty of euphoric slobber from the media--they still get to attend certain practices. The media however have to step in line with what BYU wants and will get their credentials revoked if they start breaking down plays/formations etc. BYU doesn't have that control over every idiot fan who wants to look anonymously cool online, so no more practices for fans.

They also don't want to tip their hand about new schemes, focus, plans for upcoming teams etc.

I will be attending a scrimmage on August 16th. I will pass along what I observe.

I am fine with it. Will help to curb unrealistic expectations, plus it will limit those dumb player interviews where the player makes stupid promises and predictions of grandeur that do nothing except inspire opponents and raise the hopes of shortsighted fans.



In today's Twitter world, it's the right call.

Yeah, I wonder which fan told them our secret play to have the personal protector step in front of the long snap and hit the ball. Stupid fans! :angry:

I like it. Anything that gives Bronco and Co the most out of their practices. Something which, to this point, hasn't been the biggest priority even heading into the last part of last season.



I think a last second "almost loss" to an okay Tulsa team, and no draft picks for the umpteenth year in a row is finally starting to bring them around.



(Also, I hope this move is an indicator that they go to the 3-3-5 this year, at least partially. This is probably the first year that they have the secondary talent and depth to actually pull it off, and it might be better than the standard 3-4 this year.)

Personally, I think it is stupid. And it is zero to do with entitlement, and everything to do with showing appreciation to the fans who buy tickets and financially support the program. The people who BYU relies on to support the activity financially in the first place. I also get that BYU is prepping for the season, but BYU is FCS without the fan support financially.



Thursday instead of Saturday is dumb. Attendance will be cut by at least 50%, and BYU had a great thing starting to build. Last year was really well attended, best ever. This year will be a blip compared to last. IT is a step backwards in that respect.



I am disappointed by the change. I wanted to be there with my boys and to start getting pumped for the season. Now, I get to read about it because I gotta work.



By the way, my office is a 3-5 minute drive from LES.

I'm fine with closed practices but the scrimmage seems like a lose/lose :~( . The players can't really practice due to "spies" and most of the fans don't get to see the scrimmage. Just cancel it and have a meaningful practice if this is what it's going to be.



I have a great picture of my 1 1/2 year old on my shoulders next to Cody Hoffman. My son's looking at him like he's a giant :bug: . I was really looking forward to going again this year. Too bad it won't happen.
