Juice not looking to transfer closer to home

So it sounds to me like being closer to home isn't a factor in Juice leaving BYU.

He said if he has to, he will contact the schools that offered him scholarships out of high school to see if they are still interested. Those include Washington, Hawaii, San Diego State, Fresno State and Utah.

He said BYU will release him to any school in the country, no questions asked.

It also sounds like Juice was very lucky that he initially blew off some steam to a reporter who as luck would have it, didn't have anything to record the conversation with and thus couldn't write up the story with salacious details.

Quezada started to tell me why on Monday morning, before having to run. He called me back Monday night to continue our conversation, but I was at a Salt Lake Bees game with my family, with no pen, notepad or recorder in sight, and unable to talk. So we got back in touch on Pioneer Day, and he asked me to forget what he had said the day before. He said he wasn't thinking clearly, wasn't quite prepared to talk to a reporter.

So we started over.

All this from Jay Drew's story, http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogsbyusports/54557860-65/quezada-byu-really-family.html.csp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The telling and contradictory part is this:

"I will probably look for a program that has a pro-style offense, also, and, just an opportunity to play," he said. "That's what you are always looking for, so you are not just sitting on the sideline. So I am looking for a program that will definitely give me a chance. I want to have a close relationship with the coaches there. Playing time is huge, but at the same time, the key is to be patient. That's the key. My whole redshirt year, I am basically starting over. I feel like I will be like a freshman again. So I have to be prepared for that mentally."

It appears that he wasn't getting enough playing time and didn't feel he was going to get a chance to get back to the amount of touches that he wanted. Just like Jake Heaps - he wanted a bigger part in the offense but he wan't patient enough. Too bad - he had a group of coaches that wanted to see him finish his career at the Y. Don't know if he is running away from competition but it appears so.

With all the crap JJ took for pouting a little after seeing playing time drop in his senior year - I was surprised what a free pass everyone gave Juice when he announced his sudden departure.

I still wish him well - but now we all get to wonder whether it is Dupaix or Doman that he is ticked off at. Maybe he wishes Reynolds still had the running backs - or Atuaia.

I wish him well. Quite frankly, I thought he was overhyped by BYU fans as a freshman and basicaly MIA as a sophomore. Maybe a redshirt season will help him as I am sure it will also help Jake Heaps, who he mentioned.

As many of you have noticed, my style is very direct. Maybe The Lord acted in a mysterious way and kept Josh Quezada from giving us the direct version. The indirect version seems to go like this.

It was not due to being non-Mormon in a Mormon school

Not academics

Not honor code

Not his brother's untimely death

Not a dislike of Bronco

Not a lack of friends in Provo

Not a bad education experience in Provo or social experience

Not because Jake Heaps left

Pretty not much of anything but:

Not a close relationship with one of the Skyline boys

Frustration with move away from Pro Set style of play

Concern about standing on the sideline instead of playing

Pissed off at one of the Skyline boys

If Joshua had a little more speed - the rest of this would likely have all worked out IMHO.

Good luck and best wishes. I will not call you Juice. You are not a good enough football player or a bad enough person to deserve that nickname.

After reading that "article" I think even less of Drew than I did before. Who writes an article about a 20 year old that basically says he told me one thing, but I suck as a reporter and now I'm pissed that he won't tell me again.

Bottom line is he didn't like the notion that he would have to share time with Alisa, Pritchard, Lasike, Williams, etc. and he wanted to be a featured back. He is going to struggle at other big institutions similar to BYU in that they will also have talented if not more talented RBs for which he will have to compete for playing time. Factor in that he needs reps in order to be effective (Bronco statement), and his playing time will be limited unless he goes to smaller school. Again, patience would have been helpful for him as he had 2 years under his belt, having to learn another system may set him back.

Side note, if Q. is a good RB, it must mean that we have some real studs in the backfield and maybe our running game is about to go to the next level.

I was never that impressed. And I'm not just saying that because he is transferring. I would have said the same last year. He was servicable, with a great story. I think we all wanted him to be more than he was. Frankly, there are a bevy of backs who can do what he can do, and some can even do better than he can do. I wish him luck wherever he goes, but I don't think he really leaves any hole at the RB position.

I believe Reynolds said Juice was one of the most talented backs we've seen at BYU in a long time.

It's very hard to judge based on last year when he was basically an RB with one leg. He was definitely missing something all of last year compared to his frosh year. I also think given the stable of RBs, we will be just fine without Juice.

While i wish him the best, I hope we don't miss out on his upside but i'm excited to see Lasike and Hine and Williams even sooner.

Would you have said the same thing after his freshman year? No? You expected him to be our #1 RB last season, before his injuries and his brother's death?

I sure would have. He has never impressed me. I have always thought he was just servicable. Now Unga, he impressed me from his Freshman year on. You can tell who the really good backs are going to be right away because they rarely seem to get tackled for a loss. Quezada wasn't really in that category.

This. Totally agree. Same as Heaps. Hype and Potential caused temporary blindness. I acknowledge that Joshua was better than the injured player we saw in 2011, but even in 2010 when fans were whining for Joshua to get more reps - I kept asking why. He was OK. He was not great.

How can you judge a running back at all based on 2011?

Lack of speed: bum ankle

lack of power: bum ankle

lack of yards: bum ankle

Quezada looked very different in 2010.

I thought Juice looked like a solid back. I didn't think he was a special or elite talent. But definitely would have been a good contributor this year and was going to have a good BYU career.

The problem is that he now would have been an upperclassman, and as we all know, upperclassmen are never as good as the underclassmen and all they do is get in the way of younger, better, faster, stronger players. So Juice realized he was no longer the most talented RB on the team, so he's doing us all a favore.

To be fair, Juice has never been the best back on the team and that wasn't going to change this year or next year. He wants to go somewhere where he can be the best back on the team, I wish him well as long as he never plays against us, in which case I make an exception for that game.

Totally agree. He was injuured and ineffective in 2011. He was better in 2010. Much better. Decent. Not spectacular as several posters above indicated. He was a solid 3rd string RB in 2010. Check the numbers.

I think there must be more to this story. Quezada was getting as much playing time as his body could handle. Why would he be leaving for more playing time? Sad to see him go but hopefully it works out for both BYU and Juice.

At least he didn't request a trade so his daughter could be closer to medical treatment in LA, and then, after the trade, continue to have his daughter treated by the specialists in SLC.

Was never that impressed with Juice. Even his freshman year. He's slow. U doubt we'll miss him. We have plenty of power backs that can ram through or at least try to ram through a line.

Good luck, Juice. Hope those migraines go away when you suit up at another school.

Sounds a lot like... every single RB we've had since Luke Staley. Guys like Curtis Brown and Harvey Unga. :skeptic:

I think Juice would have been VERY good back if healthy and with reps. He had great hands and was a bruiser. last year injuries really prevented him from being his best. had he not gotten injured things could have been a lot different for him.

at this point though with all the competition it might have been too late for him to become the feature back. he got behind and now must split reps with the up and coming backs.

But don't underestimate the value he brought to the team as being a non lds leader. bronco gushed about his attitude and work ethic and the natural leader he was. He was a great person to have on the team.

it was a big deal losing him. we will be okay without him but i for one wish he had stayed. he was a stand up guy.
