Where would a 13-0 team finish in BYU history?

I think it would be the best team in BYU history.

Times are different in the college football world than in 1984. 13-0 would be better than that even if we aren't invited to the NC.



14-1 was, in my view, our best team ever to date ( our last shellacking of :utard: ). Has any team ever won more than 14 games in a season?

They could with a conference championship game and a bowl. Play in Hawaii and get an extra game.

Given my massively pessimistic view of this team, if we go 13-0, 2012 will easily be the best team BYU has ever had. Easily.

I distinguish between best season and best team. 13-0 in 1984 was obviously BYU's best season, but I'd argue they weren't the best team.



My theoretical best team is the one that would win in a head-to-head game. To me, the best teams were the 1985 and 1996 teams. The '85 team was about 3 fluke plays away from being undefeated against a schedule including Rose Bowl champs #7 UCLA, #8 Air Force, defending Orange Bowl champs Washington, defending Cotton Bowl champs BC, and Ohio State.



Going undefeated is tough in any season. Injuries pile up, balls bounce weird, refs blow calls, schools rig sideline radios, teams lose focus. The 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1985, and 1996 teams all should have gone undefeated. Only the 1984 team did. If this team went 13-0, they'd be tied with 1984 for the best season ever, but I'd have to see how they actually play to judge whether they'd be the best team ever.



How fun would it be to see a league comprised of BYU's all time greatest teams playing a round-robin season to see who really was the best! I'd invite these teams: 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2009.

That would be cool to see McMahon go against McMahon.

Sorry - but rigged radios or not - didn't the 1985 team lose to a UTEP team that did not win another game? I know the rigged radio conspiracy theory came up because UTEP seemed to know exactly what BYU was going to do on every play. But since it seems that even the young children of posters on this board are reported to be able to do that, show me the proof?



There were several issues,



Maybe the radios

Bosco played almost the entire season with an undisclosed injury to his throwing arm which caused him to float long passes - INT.

Glenn Kozlowski and Matt Bellini - both NFL quality receivers or close to it, we're not suited up due to injury. Probably could have played - coaches probably looked past UTEP

UTEP threw a bizarre defensive scheme - rushing only 1 or 2 guys since Bosco never scrambled to make them pay

Overconfidence

Out coached

Unprepared



A healthy 1985 team might have been the best ever - but they were not healthy - especially Bosco - which is why he was drafted, but never played in the NFL.



Oh - undefeated 2012 would be sandwiched right after the undefeated 2013 team and ahead of 1996 and 1984.

We simply don't have so many National Championship teams that I discount them for a team that totally blew it to Washington. 1984 never looked past anyone and that is hard to do. Maybe 1996 could have won head to head. Maybe. But we have to remember that the 1984 team lost one total game over the space of 2 years. In my mind. Of only was 1984 the best team we ever had, 83-85 was the best 3 year stretch of any BYU team. I watched BYU against UW in 1996, I'd never seen a bigger case of looking past someone (other than at Stanford under Crowton). The best team ever doesn't do those things. I don't see how the best team in the nation isn't the best team from BYU.
