Can we capture lightning in a bottle twice? Jim McMahon in the glory years back in 1980 went into Madison and after a slow start - Rolled 28-3 over Bucky The Badger. Now - a QB to be determined - possibly one with little or no experience - will try to duplicate that feat.

And, if we ever get that return game announced in Provo - bam - we are 3-0 just like that over Bucky. And if they sneak an un-neutral field game in there too - Bam 4-0 - just like that.

We beat the mighty badgers before - in their crib- we can do it again.

Nobody seems to have looked it up - let the Bibster help.

Bucky went on to beat SDSU, Michigan State, Northwestern, and The Golden Gophers of Minnesota. They only lost to Purdue, UCLA (shutout), Indiana, Ohio State (shutout), Iowa, Michigan (shutout), and, of course, BYU.

The mighty 4-7 Badgers.

Last year Bucky Badger won the Big 10. Maybe Wisconsin will have an off year instead of another top 10 finish. Maybe McMahon has another year of eligibility - I don't think he graduated yet.

Go ahead and pack it in - don't all teams that look good on paper win every time? Why play the game if it is so obvious that we don't have the talent on paper to match up. Why even bother to get up in the morning if the sun won't shine. Or heaven forbid, we lose a close game and our self confidence is in the toilet and our season is a total loss. With this attitude, Helaman's stripling warriors shouldn't have stepped onto the battle-field because they were untested, not proven in battle, and hadn't gone up against 4-star warriors. They should have lost :-) Thank goodness they didn't give up before trying - same goes for our team. Hope they read your comments to give them ammo for next year - and have a chip on their shoulder with something to prove.

My issue is not with this game or any particular game. My issue is with overloading the overall schedule when a quick look around at those programs experiencing success (NC, BCS Bowls, Undefeated Seasons, Nationak Rankings, PAC Invites, Big 12 invites, etc. all the things that have had BYU fans in a funk for a year) would indicate that this is not a formula for success. It is amateurish. It is little brotherish.

Another quick look around at teams that have overloaded their schedule gives you ND for the last decade or more. When teams that are in a rebuilding year like BYU will be - see UW.

I do not think the fanbase, based on the whining of the last few years, has the stomach for it.

Scapegoats will be needed. Carousel will continue.

And at a time BYU fans so sorely want to feel better about themselves.

I am not talking about me. Other than calling for Heaps to redshirt in 2010, and then for a look/see at Lark when Heaps clearly sucked, I enjoyed 2010. Really did.

Other than calling for Heaps to be benched when he sucked in 2011, it was a really fun season to watch for me.

2013 could produce some magical moments. It could be unimaginable in either direction. I will watch every game. I never show up late and never leave early.

My other issue is with BYU giving advantage to any team - but especially good ones - and especially so many times. Same reasons as above. Amateurish.

Does not set our team up for success. Does set them up.

But you play the games scheduled - one at a time - play to win - expect to win - and it just might happen - AGAINST ALL ODDS.

One benefit - we should not need to listen to U crow about their superior schedule in 2013. Both teams have Overscheduled. U - mostly out of necessity due to conference affiliation.

But the U advantage: They have not given up home field advantage to anyone - because they do not have to. As long as BYU keeps doing so - it will continue to differentiate the two programs in that way.

Passive voice will rule the day.

Just an FYi: "Passive voice results from the author's attempt not to commit, not to offend, not to stand firm. His fear and anxiety often lead him down a meandering, excruciating, wordy route."

Re fans wanting to see where BYU stacks up:

Rebuilding Okie team - BYU squeaked out a 1 point win

Rebuilding Texas team - BYU lost by 1 point

Weak Ole Miss team - BYU squeaked out a 1 point win

Winless UW team - BYU got a 1 point win after Jake Locker tossed the ball in the area - got a penalty - extra point blocked

Mediocre UW team in Provo in 2010 - BYu won a close game

UCF - BYU gets a close win

Bad OSU team - BYU wins

TCU - you probably do not remember the last time BYU won

Utah - BYU gets the occasional close win - but loses more often than not - 44 point blowout at home for example

That is roughly how BYU measures up to good teams

Oregon State didn't want to be there. ;)

Well...if we ever want BYU to get to a point where we beat good, top rated teams I see no better way to get to that point then play as many good, top rated teams as we can.

Can't keep playing around in the kiddie pool and hope to be an Olympian.

Oregon State of the bowl game and Oregon state of last year are two different teams. The 2009 OSU team was good--the 2011 OSU team lost to an FCS team.

Yeah, because the 2006 upset of a ranked and cocky TCU was SUCH a long time ago

Didn't go back that far. Add that one to the list. Add UCLA wins and losses - including the blowout BYU win. Yes - we win a few.

Now - please list our W/L vs teams that finished

Top 10

Then

Top 20

Then Top 25

Then you will see that BYU is generally a top 30is competitor. On occasion flirting with Top 15. Sometimes nowhere in sights- 2010. But usually 20-35.

Not bad really. My point is - we already know where we stand. We play BCS teams every year.

"Back that far?" It's more recent than the Jake Locker throw up game. You were cherry picking and you know it.

If BYU beats a team, they are obviously bad. Everyone else is obviously beating teams that only go 11-2 all season.

HOw many ranked teams did the Utah 2004 team beat? Answer: 0

How many teams did the 1984 BYU beat? Answer: 0. (Pitt was ranked to start sason, but not at end and were poor).

Beating ranked teams is not always the great indicator of season success. Just gotta beat the teams you are scheduled to play.

My point exactly. How many did BSU ever beat? Almost none. TCU. Almost none. In fact - how many does the NC usually beat each year? 0-2 Top 10.

My comment was directed to the commenter that posted that we need to play a 2013 type schedule to measure how good we are.

We already know how good we are. Top 30ish on average. Probably competitive in every game in 2012. Due to rebuilding, less competitive in 2013 - probably. Still probably reasonably competitive if we get some QB experience teed up this year - unless KVN and Hoff bail early.

You only need to play 2-4 of these tems per year plus a bowl game to measure how good you are.

Did you notice that as I did this off the top of my head, I put wins and losses that seemed representative? You are all pissy because I overlooked that Bowl game in this discussion of regular season over scheduling.

For every big win you think I skipped with myv "cherry picked" list - I am sure I can come up with a Florida State debacle or two to offset it.

I think that you wanted to assemble facts to fit your positon, not that you wanted to come to a conclusion based on facts. There is a big difference.

Your tone on this thread seems to be one that BYU is has a substandard football team, and can do nothing right scheduling wise. You imply that BYU used luck to beat a 4-7 Wiscoonsin team in 1980 (i.e. "catch lightning in a bottle") and seem to postulate that it would take as much to do it again. I need to stop responding to your downer posts, and just wait 'til your meds kick in and you stop channeling your inner airwolf.

The "mighty" 4-7 Wisconsin Badgers.

Wisconsin is a relatively recent power football. 1993 was their first 10-win season since 1899. In fact, between 1905 and 1993, they only 8 games twice (and that was the most wins they had in any since in that period). They really didn't take off until 1998 with seven 10-win seasons since then.

That's because they had an RM as their starting QB in 1993...

And they still don't have an overall winning record versus the University of Minnesota.
