At the risk of getting Hawk or others all worked up about me criticizing BYU - let me elaborate. And this is not a criticism of BYU by The Bibster - because I do not agree with these perceptions.
I heard bits of this same thing in So. Cal and Utah. But not much. Then I heard a ton of it in Hawaii. It exists in every state - my situation was different when I lived in Hawaii - so lets just say my exposure to it was magnified greatly.
I am a product of the Utah public school system - and mostly in red-neck circles - Heber City - lower Sandy ie White City. But also a smidgen of Provo High School. I knew a few BY High students when that PRIVATE high school closed and most of the students came to Provo High School. Then I heard a bit of this about Y and U. But soon I was back to Heber and was not much influenced by it. I never even gave a moment's thought about differences between public and private universities other than a prevalent view that only sissies went to BYU.
Since this is the short version of this story - lets just say - at the last minute, instead of going to the U - never even bothering to apply to Y, a miracle or two happened and I ended up at Y then U for MBA. Never appreciated Y - until much later.
I love BYU - best thing that ever accidentally happened to me. None of my kids are Utes. Two are at Y.
My first three kids were products of public schools in Utah, Illinois, and California. Still never heard much of this BYU inferior education perception.
In Hawaii, scuttlebutt about public schools got me to do the unthinkable - I sent the last two kids to private school. The youngest one got a six-year dose.
As I put every ounce of energy into trying to get my sons excited about going to BYU - well-meaning, arrogant butt-head teachers and advisors put even more energy, since I was outnumbered, into getting them excited about attending almost any Private University but BYU which was deemed lower than even some public universities like CAL, UW, UCLA, and almost anything back east. Had I sent them to Barrack Obama's high school, it would have been even worse.
Part of this perception might be due to Church College of Hawaii now being called BYU - because that was about what the misperception of BYU equated to. But some would be the same old Stanford, CAL arrogance.
It is what it is - fortunately, my sons only applied to BYU.
But that perception issue exists. Maybe this exposure thing is about more than football. But, it would at a minimum take a fine Medical School and a monumental investment in PHD programs and research to change that perception.
Regardless, the overall BYU undergraduate experience cannot be beat. And the U is at best, a poor substitute for it.
