Summer Workouts:

"it has been a fantastic summer as far as I am concerned. It is getting to the point where, I feel like in the past I had to push guys and get them excited, I feel like my role is switching to pulling in the reins. Alright guys, hold up. Hold it in. It is a long summer, you don't want to get burned out.

My biggest worry, and it is a good worry to have, is guys getting burned out from doing too much. Guys are working out in the morning, watching film all afternoon, then going out and getting in a second workout."

Role as a Leader:

"..I know my strengths and I know my weaknesses. And I know one of my strengths is being able to encourage guys and get them excited about playing football, and about the opportunity we have to play college football...selfishly it is my last season, and I will be darned if I let guys slack, or let guys take it off."

Commitment to Winning:

"...people love this program, they love BYU football, and we owe it to them to put the best product on the field, and that's what I am interested in -- going out and giving them everything we got on Saturday... And we want to leave no regrets, man. That's been my biggest sentiment throughout the season, is leaving no stone unturned, and competing every day. "

Same Old Gunslinger but Well Conditioned:

"...Once the lights come on on Saturdays, they kick that ball off, it is going to be same old me. But I have taken extra measures to ensure that I am in the healthiest, most fit condition of my life going into the season. So hopefully that translates into increased durability and increased health."

Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get ready to rumble - there is a new kid in town (as a full-time starter with a mission and something to prove).

It all depends on Riley. I have had the opinion from the end of last season that if Riley stays healthy we have a fun season. If he goes down, it gets interesting/scary.

Although I totally agree - interesting / scary can be fun and entertaining. If Lark gets a meaningful shot - and delivers - CINDERELLA. Great story. Great movie.

Boom.

Lazy coaches need hard working players to make up in the leadership department.

Finally!

Lack of player leadership hindered the 2008 and 2010 and part of the 2011 season.

Seems like we havent heard much about Bronco's leadership council the last three off four years, in comparison to Beck and Cam Jensen days.

I don't think it is about laziness by coaches. Maybe about football fifth. Maybe about leadership voids, including Heaps, Reynolds, JJ and a new OC???

At any rate, credit Riley. He is living up to his leadership hype last year and now in off season, assuming its working and not just words.

Bronco has let his players fill the leadership roles. He is trying to develop leaders for the rest of their lives. There have been years where players/leaders didn't step up and fill the leadership void. This year there doesn't seem to be a void.

It's in the years there is a void that I would like to see Bronco and the coaches fill it.

ouch.

Riley is a great leader. No question. I hope he can back it up with wins against quality opponents. If we start losing this year things will get ugly really quick.

I will consider Riley a huge success if he leads us to wins against Utah and Boise State, which in my opinion are the two most important games of the year for us. Him doing that would show improvement to me after he (and special teams) blew it against TCU last year.

Doesn't sound like sense of entitlement will be tolerated by anyone - coaches or players. What I don't get, is how the attitude developed in the first place. It must have been a hard pill for Riley to swallow - watching it occur with certain players and infiltrate into various groups.

It develops quickly when there is a leadership void that isn't filled. Hall, Pitta and Unga all left at the same time and left HUGE shoes to fill. The guys left behind to fill it either couldn't.

Riley couldn't fill it in 2010 because he wasn't the one annoited by the fans and coaches to be The Guy; and then he got hurt.

Heaps was supposed to be The Guy, but he couldn't fill it because he doesn't have that type of leadership ability - or at least didn't have it at the time it was needed of him.

Same can be said of other should-have-been-leaders like DiLuigi, Kariya, etc.

The same guys coaches didn't keep from taking off December of 2008 before not even trying in an ugly bowl loss to 7-5 Arizona.

Correct, and they learned from that in 2008 and didn't repeat that mistake in 2009.

As I said earlier in the thread, BYU suffered a dearth of player leadership in 2008. This does show that players can learn to be the leaders a team needs. Hall, et al, weren't ready in 2008 to fill the void but they were in 2009.

Hopefully our guys take the same step forward from 2011 to 2012 that we took from 2010 to 2011.
