Interesting quote by Doman - basically stating the future is now...

""I'd like to have Ammon and Taysom for four straight years right now. It's all going to be dependent upon how they do (in fall camp)," Doman said. "I don't want to make them play for five years. They're older. Taysom has missed three football seasons. There's no sense in redshirting him, quite honestly, for his own good. If he wants to play in the NFL, to keep him here until he's 26 years old isn't good. If we can give him four years here and he can accomplish all he wants to here and help us be successful, then if he gets injured, we have that year reserved for him. As of right now, those two probably won't redshirt."

Makes me wonder if Hill will be put in game situations to run plays that favor his athleticism. I don't believe that they want him going into 2013 without any real game time experience. Sounds like the back-up position might be open if Taysom can out-perform Lark in Fall.

Makes sense. I think red shirting players is highly overrated, especially for 21 year olds.

I couldn't be more thrilled. It's good to see Doman making the right decision. The best players usually do not redshirt anyway. As Doman notes, Hill has been away from football for three seasons. If he or Olsen are to take over the reigns in 2013, they absolutely better get the BYU offense reps and game opportunities. Even the simple things like dressing up for the game, being part of the game day locker room, going through pre-game drills, are WAY more important than running opponents' offenses against the 1st string defense.

I think Doman is "spot on." You have a talented QB that is 21 - either he is mature mentally and physically at this point, or he will never be. The touch, timing, and judgement will come through committed work on the field, under the watchful eye of Doman.

My highlighted portion is simply unacceptable. I can't believe a BYU coach is talking about his players and getting them NFL and it somehow being important. I will not stand for this.

When I read this article from my Deseret News daily headline feed, I did not get the impression that the back-up role is wide open at all. You forgot to mention the quote where he said that if Nelson were injured, Lark would be the starter. You also forgot to mention the quote about how well the supposedly scheming and diversive Nelson and Lark have fed off each other this summer to make each other better.

What is at stake is 3rd vs 4th vs 5th string. It did seem clear that Kuresa is at the bottom as 6th string. Munns career spanning health issue were mentioned along with a anxiousness to see if he is healthy by fall quote. Health seems to have derailed Munns from the big picture - although the door is still a tiny crack open.

Wwwhhaaattt? Where's all the boo-birds? I recall quite a few folks saying Hill better redshirt, blah blah freshman, Riley Sr, play four years, etc.

I'm glad to see the enthusiasm. But methinks some of you changed your opinion or the "red- shirters" are not commenting.

I think It is the right decision and maybe even the preference of the two qb''s.

And I do think we will see QB2.2 and it will be affectionately referred to as The Double-Kat. ;)

As long as they are battling for 3rd and 4th string - and thus are unlikely to see the field in any meaningful situation other than CAT.2 - redshirting is irrelevant. Also, they are not 18. And one of them played college ball for a year. Of course you know all of that and don't need me to come in and mess with the pot or it's stirring.

I think if Nelson is healthy all year there is no reason not to redshirt both of these QB's. I don't care about how old they are. Unless they are going to play in meaningful situations there is no reason to burn their redshirt year.

Why does it matter how old these guys are? Olson has no shot at the NFL. If he doesn't want to play when he is 26 he can stop playing after his redshirt junior year. But there would still be the option to have him here for his senior year if we needed him.

One point Doman makes that kind of makes sense is if they get hurt there would be the ability to redshirt them down the road. But what if they never get hurt? I just don't agree with having both of these players go in at the end of mop up games and take snaps to turn around and hand the ball off. That does no good for their development. Let Lark or Kuresa do that.

Look at what Utah did with Alex Smith. They put him in for 3 or 4 plays total his freshman year instead of redshirting him. That is a total mismanagement of eligibility, it ended up being a mute point but what if he didn't go to the NFL early? They could have had him for two additional years.

Compare what Utah did with Louks. He was the third string QB, but he had a skill set that they utilized in meaningful times in the games. If BYU does that with Hill then I have no problem with him not getting a redshirt year in 2012.

I think one of the reasons we had success with our QB's in the past is they were forced to sit behind a veteran starter until they were juniors usually. If Hill redshirts you set it up for Mangum to be either a redshirt sophmore or possibly a junior before he takes over which reduces the risk of suffering through early years like we had with Beck and Heaps when they shouldn't have been playing yet.

If Hill really is NFL material he can leave after his redshirt junior year, but at least we would have had the option to let him stay for his senior year if he elected to, not had him graduate because he played a few meaningless minutes in 2012.

I don't think this is a good idea. We basically have no chance of 4 great years of Hill now. The only possible reason is that Hill really wants a shot at the NFL (who can blame him). If it's something he wants, I can support him in it but it doesn't help the team at all.

This year there will be more opportunities than a few minutes. There are at least four games where they should get at least half of the game.

More to the point, saving a red-shirt year in case someone gets injured makes no sense at all if that is the only reason not to redshirt now. You redshirt now - unless you expect the guy to play now. The player will be around the same number of years no matter which one is the actual redshirt year.

Redshirting or not may be more of a political thing. I would recommend that they both redshirt unless they are going to see the field - reduces likelihood of another transfer.

But the nonsense Doman spouted about not making them play five years, in addition to being flawed by the fact that one of the has already burned a year, is pure nonsense.

It is political posturing so that incoming recruits will envision that these guys will be gone and out of the way in time to leave a window for the new recruits to see the light f day. And of course even that is nonsense because they could still redshirt later.

I'm going to have to defer to Doman's judgement on this one. I would prefer keeping talented guys around for as long as possible but it is hard to argue with the logic he uses in that article.

Yes - other than it being totally flawed. Whether they redshirt or not this year has no impact at all on how long they could be t BYU because they could redshirt later. This is paid political BS to make incoming recruits less worried about being buried on the depth chart -or - Doman expects them to play and get experience going into 2013 as he stated. That would make sense - a lot of sense.

"Paid political BS" to improve recruiting is pretty valid IMO.

Unless the redshirt in and of itself encourages the transfer.

Doman is making the right decision for Hill. Hill will not magically "develop" because he gets a redshirt year. He will actually be much more prepared for the 2013 season if he suits up in 2012. If he redshirts, Hill watches the games from the sidelines (or stands) in street clothes. We need Hill to suit up, go through pre-game activities, be on the sidelines in pads during the games, and have the opportunity to actually step on the field. Do we really want Hill's first gameday experience at LES to be against Texas? We also need Hill to experience tough road trips and hostile atmospheres at Utah, Boise St., Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech. That is 100 times more valuable than running the scout team and learning BYU's opponents' offenses. We need Hill to learn BYU's offense and develop a rapport with players who will actually play in 2013.

In addition, Hill is 21 years old. If he plays 4 years at BYU, he will be 25 his senior year. That is old for a college football player. Let's get ready to enjoy Hill at QB for 2013-15 seasons. We will be fine at QB for 2016 and beyond.

Chance of Riley Nelson getting hurt this year and missing game time or games: 65%.

Chance of that injury being season ending: 50/50?

Overall chance of that injury being season ending: .50 x .65 = .352 or 35%.

Maybe that seems a little high for a season ending injury. But even if he's out for several games or more, Lark comes in. If he is marginally effective, which I think the majority of posters on CC have suggested over the last year, look for a real QB2.2, where Hill comes in and adds much needed spark, maybe even Riley-like.

But look for Hill to get PT this year regardless of Doman's reasons, because of the murder schedule of 2013 and not wanting to bring in a brand new starter. Which would be a significant change for Doman/Bronco bc they have not historically utilized PT very well to prep. And I have t imagine that Riley is not wanting to give up his glory year PT to next years prospect. He will demand his hard earned Sr year PT.

Ps. Of course there isn't any animosity between RN and JL. BECAUSE the back up guy is fully supporting the king of the hill. You want to give RN credit, but it is misplaced. It's so much easier to play from on top of the Hill and the Lark.

Often, the most talented guys do not redshirt. If they are ready to play now, why wait?

So you can utilize as much of that talent as possible without wasting a year.
