New November Schedule Opportunity

Now, hear me out on this one. Navy and South Alabama just announced the cancellation of two November games in 2015 and 2016. Navy is shedding games to make room for the Big East schedule starting 2015.



Getting South Alabama on the November schedule would not be a bad series. It would get BYU a very winnable game at LES in November against a team other than Idaho or NMSU and the return trip to the Gulf Coast in November would be a very pleasant late fall venue. South Alabama's 40K stadium is as big as or larger than Boise, Cincinnati, Wake Forest, Houston, Navy, UConn, and Washington St.



It actually fits in nicely with BYU's recent trend to have an annual game in the South. Ole Miss in 2011, Georgia Tech in 2012, Houston in 2013, at Southern Miss in 2015, at E. Carolina in 2017. A game at S. Alabama in 2016 would fit nicely.



Now, before you all start dismissing this idea completely, we absolutely have to get the series against the Big Boys. But as long we are able to land deals with Wisconsin, UCLA and other larger programs, mixing in the winnable games are necessary to a balanced schedule.

I don't see how this does anything to improve our November scheduling. If you are looking for a road game in November at least make it a destination that fans want to travel to. I'd rather play Weber State in November than on the road at South Alabama.

Agree. But if they want a 1 and done or 2 for none - bringem.

They may be looking for a payment game, and a little exposure from ESPN

My question is what would their rpi be then? Right now it has to be +100 which I would not be interested in. Too weak.

Here's my proposal for end of season schedule:



BYU should have a one neutral site game every other year in Honolulu starting in 2014 the same weekend as the conference championship games (and no other neutral site games). In other years they should play Hawaii to end the season.



They should contract to get the #3 team from the Big10 with a big payout (like 6-8 million) for the Big10 team giving both teams a shot to improve their standing to make the playoff as an at-large. Try to get the highest profile team you can but even if it is the MWC champ or the Big East #3 it's better than nothing.



They've gotta think outside the box and I think Honolulu as a neutral site to take advantage of the Hawaii rule is one way to go. Somebody get TH on the phone so I can tell him.

You actually think that game would sell many tickets? I sure don't. Hawaii doesn;t even sell out when BYU comes to town, so no way will BYU sell the place out with a Big10 school. And if you can;t sell many tickets, no reason to do it at all.

Sounds like it's time to start building "LES Pacifica" on BYU-Hawaii's campus....

No but I bet there would be as many if not more BYU fans in Honolulu than in Landover, Chicago or Dallas. And they could sell more tickets than the Hawaii bowl ever has. Television is the real reason this game could work. That and the Hawaii exception would apply allowing teams to keep their regular schedule. Not to mention the recruiting advantage this would give BYU in Hawaii.



If ESPN or Fox could sell it at a play-in game for the four team playoff it wouldn't matter if no one showed up - just the advertising would make it a huge money maker. If I were setting this up not from the BYU perspective I would contract with every league and independent in the country to get the two highest ranked teams not playing in a conference championship to play in my game. Make sure every conference ends its schedule two weeks before the game (a lot do already) to try and get more fans there.



It would be a jumping off point for an eight team playoff and BYU could set the trend.

Does the Hawaii exception for a 13th game only require that the game be played in Hawaii or does the game actually have to be played against Hawaii?

The maximum number of football contests shall exclude the following:



(j) Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico. [FBS/FCS]

Any football games played in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, respectively, either against or under the sponsorship of an active member institution located in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, by a Division I member institution located outside the area in question.

I agree with you except - when UH has a good team they sell out almost all home games. And BYU is the hottest ticket in town Vs UH. But when they have a mediocre team - the tickets are often still sold more than it appears - but not utilized. Corporate buying but then can't give them away - like last year.



But two out of town teams - even BYU - big gamble.

Also - u don't know at the start of the season who will be highly ranked - so the #3 team from whatever conference will already have played their 12 allowed games and the Hawaii rule would only apply, apparently if sponsored by a Hawaii school.

Ok - 4 team tourney with UH being 1 and BYU being 1 and two teams invited on short notice. If there is a good tv deal - maybe. UH sponsors the tourney.

What if we name a BYU-Hawaii as a walk-on for that game?

The neutral site game in Hawaii isn't a good idea. It is an outside the box idea, but the travel costs are way too high, the #3 team from any league that has a conference championship game could conceivably be in contention for that game up to a week before this proposed game, thus increasing the costs for their fans (buying tickets a week before for Hawaii?????? might be a little pricey).



An idea I would like is to play the BYU-Utah game the same week as Army-Navy (week after the championship games). Or, outside of that, another game that same day, maybe in CA, TX, FL (recruiting places).

Last year your options would have been Boise, Stanford, OK St, Michigan, or Alabama. I picked the Big10 #3 because they finish their conference season two weeks before the championship game and they travel pretty well.



I do like the 4 team idea (BYU, UH, and the top conference teams you can get) with the top two ranked teams facing off and the next two on the undercard.



I wonder if BYUH could sponsor the games. The rule doesn't say the sponsoring institution has to have a football team. Some of the basketball tourneys are sponsored by a university that doesn't participate.
