KU Spring Practice / Game Approach

The new coach took an interesting approach.

Highlights follow

Jake Heaps got the back-up QB Reps even though he has to redshirt

Jake practiced very well - again

In the Spring Game - the first team / backups played vs the scrubs

Therefore The A Team got way up on The B Team

Then with a huge lead - he had Jake Heaps run the flea flicker and poured it on The B Team

Jake executed it flawlessly vs a very weak defense

What does this tell us?

IDK

But it is a different approach to The Spring Game

At BYU last season - I think The B Team beat The A Team because the teams were more evenly matched

Should BYU let the studs build confidence by pounding the scrubs?

I don't think so.

Maybe it will work well for KU.

Should BYU give backup reps to a redshirt to prepare him for 2013?

I don't think we can afford to.

Interesting. I have mixed emotions about Jake and his success. I don't wish him ill, or injury. But, I don't exactly feel like cheering for him either. He turned his back on the Cougs.

I agree

When you're at Kansas, aren't you going up against scrubs when you go against the defensive starters as well?

Last year Kansas was 110th against the pass (277 ypg) and 118th in PER Defense (164.67).

Probably - which makes the lopsided seeding of the teams even odder IMHO.

It sure made his shiny new QB transfers look good though. Maybe coach was trying to get fans and players to believe in them. Maybe Jake's entourage negotiated the back-up rep gig as part of his transfer.

Coach raves about him and how well prepared he is. And we all know - he does practice well.

I hope Jake learns and grows and plays well when his turn comes. He will need to do so for KU to have a shot at a winning season.

If BYU fans have learned anything, it is that what Jake does in practice protected by a red jersey is completely different than what he does in games under live fire.

I don't have any ill will towards him either. But for one very selfish reason I hope he is not successful at all: How it will reflect on BYU.

If he has a great career at KU, wins the Big XII, or even an NC, then we have to admit that our coaching staff completely blew it and it will reflect very poorly on BYU football.

If he struggles, which I suspect he will because when the pressure is on he folds, then we know that it wasn't the program. 2013 and 14 will be very interesting to watch.

Not that cut and dried. BYU had him as a true freshman and a true sophomore. KU will have him as a redshirt junior. If Heaps had any sense - he would have sucked it up, red-shirted, humbled himself, and been ready to go in 2013 at BYU as a red-shirt junior. Would need to have won over his team-mates though.

BYU did blow it, though. Jake Heaps should have been red-shirted as a true freshman and when Riley went down, Lark should have been given his shot. Then we would have depth and experience last year and this year, and be in good shape for next year.

ND has an all-everything freshman recruit this year - even their fans have figured out he is not ready. It is all Jake's fault - he plays so well in practice, coaches were blinded by his potential - and rushed him into the Quest To Realuze It.

But no big worries - as Christ will learn this year at AkU - even if he plays very, very well, he will not be winning the Big 12 or contending for any NC. Schedule will be too tough and the supporting cast will fall short.

I loved seeing Ben Olson not do well. He left before trying to make it work at BYU. We ended up with Max Hall anyway so I think we were better off.

Jake gave it a go at BYU and it didn't work out. I actually think it would be cool to see him do well at Kansas. I don't think there is anyone who can argue that BYU didn't blow how they handled him. But maybe we learn from the mistakes made and do better with Mangum.

I for one look forward to hearing about Heaps doing nothing at KU and would love nothing more than for BYU to join the Big 12, play KU and knock Heaps flat on his back over and over again.

He isn't going to get any better pass protection at KU than he did at BYU. He isn't going to be throwing to any better WRs than he did at BYU. Meanwhile, he'll be going up against Oklahoma, TCU, Texas Tech, West Virginia, etc.

He's done.

Certainly the coaches mishandled him, but do you really think at the time Bronco had any other option? Hindsight is always 20/20. But, at the time Heaps had left high school early to come practice with the team. Lark was just getting off his mission.

Also, it's a safe bet Heaps and his entourage brokered in a deal where at the very least Heaps would be given a fair shake at competing for the starting spot. Given Heaps' NFL plans, Heaps' PR rep wouldn't allow anything less. Again, he practices well so all signs pointed towards a bright future. Give the kid PT. Just about all of us clamored for it.

Heaps not playing at BYU is all on Heaps' shoulders. I don't get blaming the coaches one bit. Heaps chickened out. Rather than swallow a difficult pill, man up, practice, and gain the favor of his team he turned tail and ran. Rather than take a hit in order to make the throw, Heaps ran from BYU as if a lineman were chasing him down the field.

I don't need to know that happened to know the coaching staff completely blew it. In my opinion that is already a fact. two qb system = blew it!

So the 2 qb system blew it in 10, what happened in 11?

Additional question for Johnny Lingo - exactly what do you think the coaches should have done with Jake Heaps in 2010 and then what in 2011? You have not made that clear.

Sure it's that cut and dried. If, and it is such a huge if, he thrives at KU then Weiss will be able to do what Bronco couldn't.

I don't see it happening. He is a great talent that can't handle the pressure.

That's a different situation. The two QB system was a colossal disaster that showed Bronco's pride, or inability to learn from others.

The two QB system wasn't why Jake failed. Jake failed because the coaches refused to RS him in 2010 likely because he would have never come to BYU if they did. He also failed because he can't handle the pressure.

First off, KU is down and I think that Mr. Weiss is trying to have some fun and build a culture at KU. Second, I also think he knows that year 1 will be a struggle, so he is prepping now for year 2, which is also smart.

As to Heaps--best of luck to him. I always like to see LDs kids do well, wherever they are. This is no different. Hope he pulls it together at KU and finds what he was lacking at BYU. I think the seasoning of sitting will help with that.

I personally believe that Bronco didn't like the 2 qb system any better than we did. If the stories in the media are to be believed, we had 2 coaches who had different opinions on starters and Bronco decided to compromise between the 2 of them, then took 100% of the blame when it didn't work.

Anyway, the biggest problem in 10 was the defense with Jaime Hill as the dcoordinator. If we had had Bronco running the defense from day 1 in 10, we would have had more wins. 2nd biggest problem was at QB and it wasn't nearly as big of a problem as most people state since we only used the 2 qb system for about 10 quarters of the entire season. For those of you that think that the 2 qb system stunted Heaps growth because of lack of reps in practice, how do you explain the fact that Riley Nelson came in last year after getting less reps in practice then Heaps did in 10 and still win games? Don't tell me it was all his running ability. I saw end zone camara shots of Riley progressing through his reads with his eyes in the utah state game which would have been the game that he would have had the least amount of practice time before playing.

Ways the coaches blew it with Heaps:

Not picking a starter going into his first collegiate game. Either he needed to be the starter or the backup (ie, he goes in ahead of Lark, but only if Nelson is injured).

Coaches not demanding that Nelson support Heaps instead of pulling the crap he (and other upper-classmen did) once Heaps was the starter. Move to safety or receiver, but support the starter.

Doman changing the offense mid-season. I honestly think had he called the same type of plays for Heaps early in the year that he was calling for Riley later in the year, he plays better. Doman really wanted to play with the shiny toy with all the bells and whistles (Heaps) by calling more difficult throws (one's that Riley can't make) because Heaps had the talent to make those throws. We actually have proof of this later in the season when Heaps came in for an injured Nelson in one game and played the whole next game.

Bronco and company creating an us vs them dynamic on the team. Whether it was implicit or explicit doesn't matter.

Having said all this, it was probably for the best for both the player and the team to part ways. For BYU, they've decided they want a different type of player at QB. For Heaps, how many deposed starters ever really get a team back on any level?

+1 Lawboy. The Heaps situation was a fail on everyone's part. Why would we cheer for him to fail? It didn't work out, it's pretty clear now that even a redshirt this year wouldn't have worked out, so he left and was one of the few people involved that took the high road with the media.

Between coaches, senior leadership, Heap's parents and advisors, and Heaps I'm not sure the teenager is the one to wrest all the blame and animosity on.

Thank goodness for Nelson, Hill, Mangum, and with any luck that kid from Jordan High comes to BYU in 3 more years.

I care about BYU and what happens at BYU. Who here is from Kansas again?
